Correction, 6 Nov 2026: an earlier version used Nasdaq’s last-sale price of $182.29 (−8.91%) for Nvidia; the official close was $181.60 (−9.26%). Every close in the 12-stock basket now uses Nasdaq’s official closing prices, and the basket total has been updated from $1,436.8 billion to $1,447.4 billion (11.1% of its value). Nvidia’s fall is still its worst daily close since 27 January 2025.
The sell-off in AI stocks was the biggest story of 5 November 2026, by our reading of the news. The 12 AI stocks we tracked closed a combined $1,447.4 billion lower than on Wednesday, by our arithmetic from Nasdaq’s official closes and the share counts in each company’s latest SEC filing, and Nvidia closed at $181.60, down 9.26%, its worst one-day fall since 27 January 2025 on Nasdaq’s daily closes.
As we read it, the rest of the day’s coverage ran on the build-out behind those stocks: who rents data center capacity, where it can be built after the vote, and how Anthropic and OpenAI stand before their listings. The threads are the sell-off; Microsoft and the neoclouds; data centers after the vote; Anthropic and OpenAI; chips and memory; products and models; and later items. The key insight: As we read it, the day’s coverage put the AI sell-off next to the build-out behind it: 12 AI stocks closed $1,447.4 billion lower, by our arithmetic, while Bloomberg reported that Microsoft is tightening oversight of neocloud projects and SpaceX’s 5-year default swaps reached 286.56, according to Markit data cited on X. We do not say one caused the other.
The AI Selloff
The 12 AI stocks we tracked through Thursday’s sell-off closed a combined $1,447.4 billion lower than on Wednesday, by our arithmetic from Nasdaq’s official 4:00 p.m. ET closes and the share counts in each company’s latest SEC filing, about 11.1% of the basket’s value. Nvidia closed at $181.60, down 9.26%, its worst one-day fall since 27 January 2025 on Nasdaq’s daily closes, and about $446.6 billion of market value.
The loss deepened through the day: on the same stocks and share counts we counted about $930.1 billion at 10:04 a.m. ET and $1,087.0 billion at 11:44 a.m. ET. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52% to close at 24,315.00, CNBC reported. Read: the $1.45 trillion close, the morning count and Apple passing Nvidia the evening before.

European stocks rose above their previous closing record in what Bloomberg described as an outperformance “driven by a rotation out of the artificial intelligence trade and a strong earnings season.” Read: Samsung and SK hynix and Europe’s record.
SpaceX’s 5-year credit default swaps widened 24.5 basis points to 286.56, according to Markit data cited by Walter Bloomberg on X; by our arithmetic that is about 9.3% in a day, and protecting $10 million of SpaceX debt for a year now costs about $286,560. Read: the SpaceX default-swap record.

Microsoft and the Neoclouds

Microsoft has also rejected an option to more than double its existing contract with Nscale in Texas, the Financial Times reported. Read: Microsoft’s oversight and the Nscale option.
The Information reported that IREN is one of the third parties whose late capacity left Microsoft spending about $5 billion less on capital expenditures in the quarter than it had planned, about 11% of the $45.2 billion Microsoft said it spent, by our arithmetic. In the same quarter Microsoft took on $6.5 billion of new operating-lease assets, according to its Form 10-Q, 4.6 times the year-earlier figure, by our arithmetic. Core Scientific added a risk factor on data center moratoriums to its 10-Q, which says CoreWeave represented approximately 84% of its revenue for the nine months.
Bloomberg reported that the Bank of England “has queried market participants about data center projects that are being financed without a tenant in place to pay rent.” Read: CoreWeave’s backlog, Core Scientific and the Bank of England.
Data Centers After the Vote
A Goldman Sachs trading-desk note by Rich Privorotsky, as summarized by BigGo Finance, argued that corporate decision-makers “may instead pull capital deployment forward into 2027, rushing to take advantage of current approval conditions”; Goldman’s map puts about 45% of planned US capacity in states likely to tighten rules, investingLive reported, and by our arithmetic Texas is about 56% of that. Senior OpenAI leaders discussed whether the results meant resetting expectations for next year’s data center capacity, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar. Read: Goldman’s pull-forward and OpenAI’s capacity talks.
OpenAI “reaffirmed its promise to pay the full cost of powering data centers” it owns and operates, CNBC reported, and Google said it is building a $17 billion data center in Wyoming and that “We will pay for 100% of the power we use”. Read: SpaceX in Arizona, Sunbury and rack density.
Anthropic and OpenAI Before Their Listings
Anthropic’s amended Form S-1 shows $131.9 billion of cash and short-term investments against approximately $69.8 billion of contractual obligations due in the next 12 months, about 1.9 times by our arithmetic, and a payments table that peaks at $47.8 billion in 2029. Later on 5 November
METR, an independent AI evaluation group, says Anthropic is “likely improving the capabilities of their models on well-specified tasks at around twice the rate they did between March 2024 and October 2025”, and gives it “with high uncertainty”; METR guesses that “a majority (perhaps โ80%) of the current (October 2026) acceleration is due to AI”. Anthropic co-founder Sam McCandlish wrote on X: “We redacted a lot, and I accept that this makes it harder for others to check METR’s work”. Read: METR’s assessment.
Three Republican House committee chairmen have asked Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang to appear for a joint, closed-door briefing on 18 November 2026, about his interactions with Megaspeed executive Alice Huang, whom the letter calls “a publicly reported People’s Republic of China (PRC) intelligence asset”. Nvidia is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on 17 November, CNBC reported, the day before the requested briefing. Read: the House letter.
IREN’s quarterly report on Form 10-Q, filed on Thursday, said: “At Microsoft’s request, we are implementing a network design change across the Horizon deployments”, and its results release moves its more than $4 billion annualised revenue target from year-end 2026 to January 2027, saying it “may extend to February 2027”. The Structural Read
As we read it, the loss deepened through the session: on the same 12 stocks and share counts we counted about $930.1 billion at 10:04 a.m. ET, $1,087.0 billion at 11:44 a.m. ET and $1,447.4 billion at the close, by our arithmetic.
As we read it, the companies that rent out capacity were in the news as much as the chipmakers: The Information reported that IREN is one of the third parties whose late capacity left Microsoft spending about $5 billion less than planned, and IREN’s 10-Q says the Horizon change comes “At Microsoft’s request”. We do not say why prices moved.
As we read it, the labs’ listings were priced in the same hours: Polymarket’s price for an Anthropic IPO before the end of 2026 fell to 77.1% at 16:52 UTC from 90.1% at 15:00 UTC, and Anthropic’s S-1/A shows about 1.9 times cover for its next 12 months of obligations, by our arithmetic.

“may instead pull capital deployment forward into 2027, rushing to take advantage of current approval conditions and complete strategic deals before planning policies change.”
Three Implications
NEOCLOUD LANDLORDS Nebius, IREN and Nscale have put the value of their Microsoft contracts at up to $70.9 billion together, by our arithmetic, and CoreWeave’s own figures leave about 64% of its contracted power not yet active.
CREDIT SpaceX’s 5-year credit default swaps reached 286.56, according to Markit data cited on X, and Bloomberg reported that the Bank of England has queried market participants about data centers financed without a tenant in place.
BUILDERS Goldman’s Privorotsky argued that decision-makers may pull capital deployment forward into 2027, and one Kyber rack needs the power of 75 of today’s average racks, by our arithmetic.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.
The analysis describes a stack of nine layers, “running from energy at the bedrock to governance at the ceiling”, and says: “The supercycle has a ceiling now, and the ceiling is political.”
As we read it, the day’s sell-off and the neocloud reports sat on the compute and energy layers of that stack. We do not say one caused the other. The analysis was published in June 2026 and does not discuss this sell-off.
What Is Not Established
This roundup adds no new reporting and selects from the day’s coverage. Every figure above is taken from the linked FourWeekMBA piece, each built from its own primary source. The threads, and the reading of the sell-off and the build-out as one story, are our grouping, not a finding.
We do not claim that any one story moved the stocks. The market figures are our arithmetic from prices at the times labelled; several items rest on outlet reports citing people familiar with the matter; the prediction-market figures are traders’ prices; and METR gives its estimate “with high uncertainty”.
The Bottom Line
By our arithmetic, 12 AI stocks closed $1,447.4 billion lower on 5 November and Nvidia fell 9.26%. The same day, Bloomberg reported that Microsoft is tightening oversight of neocloud projects whose disclosed Microsoft contracts add up to as much as $70.9 billion, by our arithmetic, and SpaceX’s 5-year default swaps reached 286.56, according to Markit data cited on X.
