How Far Is Back to Wednesday

The semiconductor ETF closed at 150.1367 on Wednesday and 131.90 on Thursday, a fall of 12.15%. Its premarket price recovers about 42.6% of that drop in points, by our arithmetic; getting back to Wednesday’s close would take a rise of 13.83% from Thursday’s close.

For the S&P 500, our piece on Morgan Stanley’s downside target notes a 7,100-7,300 range in a note dated 2 November, against a Thursday close of 7,353.73. The overnight moves in Europe are in our piece on Europe’s chip stocks, and the full Thursday picture is in the AI rout in 12 numbers.

Connecting the Coverage

Asia traded before New York on Friday. On Taiwan: TSMC opened limit-down and Taiwan AI stocks lost $97B at the close. On credit: SoftBank’s bond fell the most in 10 weeks as the AI rout hit credit. What is new here: the US premarket, stock by stock, against Thursday’s loss.

The Structural Read

As we read the basket, the rebound was uneven: TSMC’s ADR had regained about 61% of its Thursday loss and Tesla about 22%, by our arithmetic.

As we read the semiconductor ETF, its premarket price of $139.66 sat 42.6% of the way back to Wednesday’s 150.1367 close, by our arithmetic, so most of Thursday’s fall had not been recovered.

As we read the timing, these are premarket prices from thin early trading; the 9:30 a.m. ET open sets the first regular-session prices.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.

The framework argues: “It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing”.

As we read it, the stocks in our basket are the listed end of that financing, and their prices moved by hundreds of billions of dollars in two sessions. The framework does not discuss Friday’s premarket trading.

What Is Not Established

Premarket prices come from thin early trading and are not closes. These figures are as of 6:46 a.m. ET; the regular session opens at 9:30 a.m. ET and its prices may differ. The value changes use the same share counts as our Thursday piece, from each company’s latest SEC filing, with TSMC converted to ADRs.
