TSMC opened at its 10% limit-down price of NT$2,020 in Taipei on 6 November, 9.82% below its 5 November close, according to Taiwan Stock Exchange data. By about 9:30 a.m. Taiwan time it traded at NT$2,050, down 8.48%, and the TAIEX index was down 8.21% at 38,162.08.
By our arithmetic, TSMC, MediaTek, ASE Technology Holding and Hon Hai were together about NT$6.01 trillion, or about $181.9 billion, lower in market value at that read than at the 5 November close, at 33.054 Taiwan dollars to the US dollar. TSMC accounted for about $149.1 billion of it, or 82%.
Business Pill · Concentration
A short Business Engineer explainer on concentration: when a few big pieces make up most of a total. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about TSMC or Taiwan’s market.
The key insight: By our arithmetic on Taiwan Stock Exchange data, TSMC opened at its 10% limit-down price, 9.82% below its 5 November close, and TSMC, MediaTek, ASE Technology Holding and Hon Hai were together about $181.9 billion lower in market value at about 9:30 a.m. Taiwan time on 6 November.
What Happened at the Open
Taiwan Stock Exchange data read at 01:31 UTC show MediaTek at NT$3,115 and ASE Technology Holding at NT$515, both 9.97% lower and both at their limit-down prices, with the open, high, low and latest trade at the same price. Hon Hai traded at NT$215.50, down 8.30%, after a low of NT$212.50, 9.57% below its previous close.
The TAIEX opened 6.40% lower at 38,915.76 and touched a low of 37,837.05, 8.99% below its 5 November close of 41,574.72, by our arithmetic. The zerohedge account on X posted at 01:13 UTC that TSMC shares tumbled 9.8%, pushing the TAIEX 9% lower. Those figures match TSMC’s limit-down open and the index’s low; by about 9:30 a.m. both falls were smaller.

The Asia Leg
Taipei was the third market to open sharply lower on 6 November. In Seoul, as we reported in KOSPI Halted After 8.6% Plunge; Samsung, SK Hynix Lose $166B, the Korea Exchange halted KOSPI trading for 20 minutes from 9:03 a.m. Korea time. In Tokyo, as we reported in Nikkei Hits Bear Market; SoftBank Worth 2x Its OpenAI Bet, the Nikkei 225 traded 20.36% below its record close at 9:39 a.m. Japan time.
By our arithmetic across the three pieces, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix were about $166 billion lower at the Seoul halt, four Tokyo-listed names about $54.3 billion lower at 9:39 a.m. Japan time, and the four Taiwan names about $181.9 billion lower at about 9:30 a.m. Taiwan time. That is about $402 billion across ten companies, a rough sum measured at different times and exchange rates rather than a single snapshot.
The sell-off followed the 5 November session in New York, which we covered in 12 AI Stocks Lose $1.45T at Close as Nvidia Falls 9.3%. At that close, as we reported in Nvidia, Meta, TSMC Enter Bear Markets: 25 of 25 Now Down 20%, TSMC’s US-listed shares were 27.6% below their 52-week closing high on Nasdaq data.
Packaging Investment Continues
Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said on 5 November that ASE Semiconductor plans to invest NT$123.7 billion and hire 3,553 more local staff, adding production lines at Nanzih, Kaohsiung and Tainan parks to expand high-end packaging and testing capacity. In our translation, the ministry said the investment responds to “demand for high-end semiconductor packaging and testing driven by the rapid development of AI and high-performance computing”. At 33.054 Taiwan dollars to the dollar, NT$123.7 billion is about $3.74 billion, by our arithmetic.
Micron’s Taoyuan Plant
Separately, Bloomberg and Taiwan’s United Daily News reported on 5 November that Micron had paused construction of its $4.5 billion plant in Taoyuan amid a labour dispute, as we covered in Taiwan Calls Micron’s Union Deal Valid as $4.5B Fab Stalls. The Taoyuan union called the pause report unofficial, and Taoyuan’s labour bureau says the union and the company meet for a third time on 6 November. We found no statement from Micron on the plant.
The Business Lever
The business lever is concentration: TSMC alone accounted for about 82% of the value lost by the four Taiwan names at our read, by our arithmetic, and MediaTek and ASE Technology Holding were held at the 10% limit. The day before, on 5 November, the government’s approval of ASE Semiconductor’s packaging investment showed spending on AI capacity continuing on the island.

The Structural Read
As we read the open, Taipei followed Seoul and Tokyo: three markets opened sharply lower within the same hour of trading, after the 5 November sell-off in New York.
As we read the exchange data, the sell-off in Taiwan hit the limit: MediaTek and ASE Technology Holding were held at their 10% limit-down prices at our read, and TSMC opened at its limit before trading back to an 8.48% fall.
As we read the ministry’s release alongside the prices, the government approved new AI packaging capacity on the island on 5 November, the day before the open.

The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.
The analysis says: “It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing — and the financial architecture is starting to invert.”
As we read it, Taiwan’s chipmakers sit at the receiving end of that financing: on 6 November, TSMC alone accounted for about $149.1 billion of lost market value at our 9:30 a.m. read, by our arithmetic. The analysis predates this sell-off and does not discuss Taiwanese share prices.
