UK Sovereign AI Backs Chemistry Lab’s 8-Figure Seed Round

The UK government said on Thursday, 5 November, that its Sovereign AI venture fund is backing Potential Sciences, a chemistry AI startup founded by Hatem Helal, as part of an eight-figure fundraise announced that day. The package includes investment and access to compute, including the Isambard-AI supercomputer in Bristol, the GOV.UK release says.

The release calls Potential Sciences a British startup. Potential Sciences Company, the entity registered at Companies House, was incorporated in Delaware on 15 October 2025, the records show: 386 days before the round was announced, by our arithmetic.

Business Pill · Power Law Explained

A short explainer on power laws: why a few outcomes account for most of the returns. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Potential Sciences.

The key insight: As we read it, the UK state is now a named investor in an eight-figure chemistry AI round, alongside Twin Path Ventures and angels including Patrick Collison, the GOV.UK release shows. The entity registered at Companies House as Potential Sciences Company is a Delaware corporation, incorporated 386 days before the round, by our arithmetic.

What the Government Announced

The release does not give the size of the round or of the fund’s stake. “Like most venture capital funds we do not comment on specific investment figures as they are commercially sensitive,” its notes to editors say. The notes say typical equity investments will be worth around £1-10 million.

“Sovereign AI is backing Potential Sciences as an investor in today’s funding round,” the release says. It lists Twin Path Ventures, Odyssey, Portfolio Ventures, Blue Wire Capital, rule30, Nauta Capital and Lightfield Equity as other backers, plus angels including Patrick Collison, the Stripe co-founder, and Chris Gibson, co-founder and former CEO of Recursion.

The compute comes through the AI Research Resource, the UK’s national suite of supercomputers. The release adds that the Budget a week earlier confirmed a further £140 million for Sovereign AI: £60 million for the fund’s investments and £80 million for its R&D Procurement Scheme.

What the Company Claims

Potential Sciences is building an AI model trained on the laws of physics rather than on past lab experiments. That approach could make the AI calculations needed to design chemicals 100 times cheaper than at present, the release says. That figure is the company’s own claim.

“We rebuilt quantum chemistry for GPUs so that gold-standard accuracy is affordable at the scale AI needs,” Helal said in the release. “When your code is 100 times more efficient, a seed round buys what used to take a dedicated datacenter.”

What the Filings Show

Companies House lists Potential Sciences Company as an overseas company, incorporated in the United States and governed by Delaware law. Its first UK establishment opened on 6 March 2026. A Delaware certificate filed with its UK registration dates its incorporation to 15 October 2025.

That registration form gives its issued share capital as 9,000,000 shares at a value of $90.00. A separate UK company, Potential Sciences UK Ltd, was incorporated on 18 November 2025, with a registered office in London, with Helal recorded as the person with significant control, owning 75% or more of its shares.

The release says all the startups Sovereign AI supports are firmly anchored in the UK, through their founders, leadership, headquarters or a large share of their talent. Helal is listed as a British director resident in the United Kingdom on both records.

Connecting the Coverage

Money for AI in drug discovery moved elsewhere this week too. On the largest name: Google’s Isomorphic in talks for $5B at $50B, 2.4x its May round. On smaller rounds: 8 health AI rounds took $332.5M since October. On molecules: Intology’s Locus cuts molecule error 19% vs Claude Code. What is new here: a UK state fund in the cap table, and the Delaware record.

The Structural Read

As we read the release, the fund names no figure for its stake; its notes say typical equity investments will be worth around £1-10 million, so the fund’s ticket and the round size remain separate unknowns.

As we read the company’s pitch, the product is data: Helal says the laws of physics can supply new training data if the software can use modern hardware. The 100x figure is the company’s claim.

As we read the records, the Delaware company opened its first UK establishment on 6 March 2026, 142 days after incorporation, by our arithmetic; the UK Ltd was formed 34 days after incorporation.

Hatem Helal, founder and CEO, in the GOV.UK release

“AI for drug discovery has learned almost everything the existing experimental record can teach it.”

Three Implications

FOR THE UK FUND It is an investor in the round and adds compute through the AI Research Resource, including Isambard-AI, the release says.

FOR DRUG-DISCOVERY AI The company says physics-generated data could make chemical-design calculations 100 times cheaper; that claim is untested in public.

FOR READERS OF THE RECORDS The registered entity is a Delaware corporation incorporated on 15 October 2025, Companies House records show.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.

The framework argues: “Each moat is built by a different data pipeline.”

As we read it, Potential Sciences is pitching a data pipeline of its own: training data generated from physics rather than from past lab experiments. The framework does not discuss Potential Sciences.

What Is Not Established

Neither the round size nor the valuation is public; “eight-figure” means at least 10 million, and the release does not name the currency. The records we read do not show which entity issued the new shares or how the Delaware company and the UK Ltd are linked. The 100x figure has not been independently tested. We did not contact the company.

The Bottom Line

The UK’s Sovereign AI fund is an investor in Potential Sciences’ eight-figure round and is adding supercomputer access. Potential Sciences Company, the Delaware corporation registered at Companies House, was incorporated 386 days earlier, by our arithmetic, and Potential Sciences UK Ltd 34 days after that.

A note on sourcing. The round, its backers, the compute and the quotes are from the GOV.UK release of 5 November 2026. Corporate details are from Companies House records read on 6 November 2026, including the Delaware certificate of incorporation filed with the company’s UK registration. The 386 and 34 day counts are our arithmetic. Seb Johnson’s post on X first pointed us to the story. We did not contact Potential Sciences.
