OpenAI Confirms Cat Wu Hire; Wu to Report to Tibo Sottiaux

OpenAI confirmed to Business Insider that Cat Wu, the former product lead for Anthropic’s Claude Code, is joining the company. An OpenAI representative told Business Insider that Wu will report to Tibo Sottiaux and work with Nick Turley on enterprise products and Ashley Alexander on consumer products. Anthropic declined to comment, Business Insider reported.

OpenAI president Greg Brockman welcomed Wu on X 2 minutes and 49 seconds after Wu’s announcement at 00:25 UTC on 5 November, by our arithmetic from the two posts’ timestamps. Sottiaux followed 4 minutes and 7 seconds after it.

Business Pill · The Model and the Harness

A short Business Engineer explainer on the difference between an AI model and the harness around it. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about the people in this piece.

The key insight: An OpenAI representative told Business Insider that Cat Wu will report to Tibo Sottiaux and work with Nick Turley on enterprise products and Ashley Alexander on consumer products; Greg Brockman welcomed Wu on X 2 minutes and 49 seconds after the announcement, by our arithmetic.

What OpenAI Said

Wu’s own post said the job is to lead product management for Core Products. It named Sottiaux but did not say who Wu reports to or which teams Core Products covers.

The reporting line came from OpenAI. Business Insider’s Stephen Council wrote that Wu will work with Turley on enterprise products and Alexander on consumer products, and report to Sottiaux, “an OpenAI representative said.” The story was published at 00:57 UTC, 31 minutes and 55 seconds after Wu’s post, by our arithmetic.

Business Insider also wrote: “The hire could help OpenAI’s Codex adoption”. That is the outlet’s own assessment. Neither Wu’s post nor the OpenAI representative, as quoted, mentions Codex.

What Was Posted on X

Cat Wuโ€™s post on X at 00:25 UTC on 5 November 2026, announcing the role to lead product management for Core Products at OpenAI. It is the starting point for the timings in this piece.

Greg Brockmanโ€™s post at 00:28 UTC, welcoming Wu to the team. By our arithmetic it came 2 minutes and 49 seconds after Wuโ€™s post.

Tibo Sottiauxโ€™s quote post at 00:29 UTC: โ€œWelcome Cat. Stoked to be building together soon.โ€ An OpenAI representative told Business Insider that Wu will report to Sottiaux.

The Posts From OpenAI’s Side

Brockman posted at 00:28 UTC, tagging Wu’s account with a welcome “to the team!!”. Sottiaux’s quote post at 00:29 UTC read: “Welcome Cat. Stoked to be building together soon.”

Our first piece on the move, published at 00:59 UTC, named Sottiaux’s post as the only OpenAI-side response we had found. Brockman’s post had in fact come 1 minute and 18 seconds before it, by our arithmetic, and this piece adds it.

What Brockman Said About Codex

At The Wall Street Journal’s WSJ Tech conference on 4 November, Brockman described OpenAI’s first half. According to WSJ’s caption file for the clip, he said: “It really looked in many ways like coding, we weren’t even in the conversation. We had Codex, but no one was talking about it.”

In the same clip he said the third quarter was “entirely different”. The clip does not mention Wu, and no source we read links the two.

What Wu Said About Shares

Business Insider reported that Wu wrote on X of having “no idea” whether leaving would allow selling shares earlier than remaining employees, and that it “wasn’t a factor for me.” Asked about taking time off, Wu replied “post agi!”, according to the same story. We have not read those replies on X ourselves.

A Second Exit From Anthropic

Business Insider wrote that this is not the first time Wu has left Anthropic for a rival since joining in summer 2024. Wu and Claude Code creator Boris Cherny departed for the coding startup Cursor in 2025 and returned to Anthropic soon after, as The Information reported at the time, according to Business Insider.

Before Anthropic, Wu was a partner at Index Ventures, which later co-led Anthropic’s September 2025 funding round, Business Insider reported.

Connecting the Coverage

Our related pieces on Cat Wu and the coding-agent race:

The Structural Read

As we read the reporting line, the job Wu described as leading product management for Core Products sits across both of OpenAI’s product audiences that Business Insider named, enterprise and consumer.

As we read the timestamps, OpenAI’s president and Wu’s new manager both answered the announcement within about four minutes, and Business Insider’s story carrying OpenAI’s confirmation was published 31 minutes and 55 seconds after it, by our arithmetic.

As we read Brockman’s WSJ remarks, OpenAI’s president described Codex as a product that existed in the first half but that “no one was talking about”; no source we read connects that remark to the hire.

Three Implications

FOR OPENAI Business Insider reported that OpenAI confirmed the hire and that an OpenAI representative gave the reporting line to Tibo Sottiaux.

FOR ANTHROPIC Anthropic declined to comment to Business Insider, and no source we read names who now leads product for Claude Code.

FOR THE CODING-AGENT RACE Business Insider’s own assessment is that the hire could help OpenAI’s Codex adoption; neither Wu’s post nor the OpenAI representative, as quoted, mentions Codex.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Product Overhang Doctrine.

The framework says: “The first is what your underlying technology can do. The second is what your users can actually do with it.”

As we read it, Brockman’s own account of the first half, a Codex that existed while “no one was talking about it”, describes the second curve, and product management is the job that works on it. The framework does not discuss OpenAI, Anthropic or Wu.

What Is Not Established

The reporting line comes from an OpenAI representative quoted by Business Insider, not from an OpenAI post or release. No source we read gives Wu’s start date, says whether Core Products includes Codex, or names who now leads product for Claude Code at Anthropic. Anthropic declined to comment to Business Insider. The timings are our arithmetic from the posts’ and the story’s timestamps.

The Bottom Line

OpenAI has confirmed the hire, and an OpenAI representative told Business Insider that Wu will report to Tibo Sottiaux and work with Nick Turley on enterprise products and Ashley Alexander on consumer products. Brockman welcomed Wu on X 2 minutes and 49 seconds after the announcement, by our arithmetic.

A note on sourcing. The reporting line, OpenAI’s confirmation and Anthropic’s response are from Business Insider. The posts are quoted from X, and Brockman’s Codex remarks from WSJ’s caption file for the WSJ Tech clip. The response times are our arithmetic from the timestamps.
