Cat Wu, whom Business Insider described as “the head of product for Claude Code”, posted on X at 00:25 UTC on Thursday, 5 November 2026: “Some news: I’m joining OpenAI to lead product management for Core Products!” Four minutes later, the account Wu tagged in the post, @thsottiaux, replied with a quote post: “Welcome Cat. Stoked to be building together soon.”
By our arithmetic from the two posts’ timestamps, the OpenAI post came about 27 hours (26 hours and 52 minutes) after Wu wrote at 21:33 UTC on 3 November that “Friday was my last day at Anthropic”. That Friday was 30 October, six calendar days before the OpenAI post.
Business Pill · The Model and the Harness
A short Business Engineer explainer on the difference between an AI model and the harness around it. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about the people in this piece.
The key insight: By our arithmetic from the two posts’ timestamps, Cat Wu announced the OpenAI role about 27 hours after the post announcing the exit from Anthropic, and six calendar days after Wu’s stated last day there.
What Wu Wrote
The post gives the role, a reason and a plan. On the role, Wu wrote that it is to “lead product management for Core Products”. The post does not say which OpenAI products Core Products covers or when Wu starts.
On the reason, Wu wrote: “I have a lot of respect for OpenAI for showing the world that scaling works, for bringing AI to over a billion people, and for believing great products are core to the mission.”
On the plan, Wu wrote: “I’m excited to work with @thsottiaux, an incredible PM team, and everyone across OpenAI. Together, we’ll build agents that have your back and your team’s, and keep you in control, so you get more time for the people and work you love.” The post closes: “Lots to learn, and lots to build. Please keep your feedback coming!”

Andrew Curran’s quote post at 00:42 UTC on 5 November. The comment is Curran’s own view.
Austin Lau’s post on X at 02:01 UTC on 5 November 2026. Lau writes of having recently joined OpenAI and of helping build the growth function at Anthropic. It is the source for the update box later in this piece.
Andrew Curran’s quote post of Lau’s announcement at 02:55 UTC on 5 November: “Anthropic -> OpenAI, second one today.” The comment is Curran’s own.
What OpenAI’s Side Posted
The @thsottiaux quote post, at 00:29 UTC, is the only response from the OpenAI side we found by 00:55 UTC. The latest posts on OpenAI’s main X account that we read at that time were about ChatGPT Images 2.6 and a security research pipeline, not the hire.
Andrew Curran, who writes about AI on X, quote-posted Wu’s announcement at 00:42 UTC with his own view: “OpenAI steals one from Anthropic. Unusual that someone leaves the embrace of Claude.”
Update, 5 Nov, 03:19Z: A second person who says they helped build Anthropic’s growth function says they have joined OpenAI. Austin Lau, who posts on X as @helloitsaustin, wrote at 02:01 UTC: “I recently joined @OpenAI”. “My time at Anthropic was a fever dream in the best way possible,” Lau wrote. “Got to help build the growth function, work alongside some really really talented people, and tackle some of the most challenging problems of my career.”
Lau’s X profile reads “growth @openai” and adds: “previously did some stuff at @anthropicai @notionhq @dropbox”. Neither the post nor the profile gives a job title or a start date.
Andrew Curran, who writes about AI on X, quote-posted it at 02:55 UTC: “Anthropic -> OpenAI, second one today.” Wu’s own post went up at 00:25 UTC. This box rests on those two posts and Lau’s profile only.
The Claude Code Exits So Far
Our 3 November piece on Wu’s exit paired the departure with one number. By our arithmetic from Anthropic’s S-1/A, filed on 2 November, Anthropic’s quarterly revenue grew about 45x, from $376 million in the three months to 31 March 2025, the quarter Claude Code entered research preview, to $16,956 million in the three months to 30 September 2026. That figure covers all of Anthropic; the filing gives no revenue figure for Claude Code itself.
By our count on 4 November, three of the four named Anthropic exits we could source from 5 September to 3 November came from Claude Code: Wu, Thariq Shihipar and Anthony Morris. Shihipar’s post on 24 October said: “For me, it is time for a bit of a break before diving into something new.” Wu is the first of the three whose next role we have seen announced in the sources we read.
The same week, Similarweb estimated that monthly visits to claude.ai/code rose about 12x in a year, by our arithmetic from its chart, and we counted 79 of Anthropic’s 681 open job listings naming Claude Code.
A Week of Coding-Agent Moves
The post lands a day after three coding-agent moves we covered on 4 November. OpenAI said it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, and wrote that users of the Codex app have “already used Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries”. Axios reported that Meta has acquired Conductor, which lets engineers manage several coding agents at once. Cognition launched its SWE-2 Flash coding model.
Wu’s post does not mention Codex, Pierre, Conductor or Cognition, and no source we read connects the hire to those deals.
The Business Lever
The business lever in this story is product leadership for agents. In the 3 November post, Wu described how Claude Code use had changed: “Today, the default is trusting Claude’s judgment to auto-approve.” In the 5 November post, Wu describes the plan at OpenAI as agents that “keep you in control”.
As we read the two posts together, the person who described auto-approval becoming the default at Anthropic now frames the OpenAI work around how much control users keep over agents. Neither post gives a product name, a price or a usage figure for OpenAI.

The Structural Read
As we read Wu’s post, the role is product management, not engineering or research: Wu wrote of joining to “lead product management for Core Products” and of working with “an incredible PM team”.
As we read the @thsottiaux quote post, the only OpenAI-side response we found by 00:55 UTC is a welcome, not a company announcement.
As we read the chain, Wu is the first of the three Claude Code people who announced exits between 24 October and 3 November whose next role we have seen announced in the sources we read.
Cat Wu, on X, 5 November 2026
“Together, we’ll build agents that have your back and your team’s, and keep you in control, so you get more time for the people and work you love.”
Three Implications
FOR CLAUDE CODE USERS Wu’s 3 November post said the default is now trusting Claude’s judgment to auto-approve; the person who wrote that now works at OpenAI.
FOR OPENAI WATCHERS Wu names @thsottiaux, who welcomed Wu in a quote post, as a colleague in the new role; the post does not define Core Products.
FOR THE CODING-AGENT FIELD The post follows OpenAI’s plan to acquire Pierre, Meta’s acquisition of Conductor and Cognition’s SWE-2 Flash launch, all on 4 November.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.
The framework puts it this way: “The surface, not the model, governs autonomy.”
As we read it, Wu’s two posts are about that surface: the exit post described auto-approval becoming the default in Claude Code, and the OpenAI post promises agents that “keep you in control”. The people who design how much an agent may do on its own are product managers, and one of them has now changed labs. The framework does not discuss Wu or this hire.
What Is Not Established
The sources we read do not give Wu’s start date, the reporting line, which products sit in Core Products, or the terms of the hire. By 00:55 UTC we found no announcement from OpenAI’s company accounts and no comment from Anthropic on the move.
The 27 hours and six days are our arithmetic from post timestamps and dates; they measure time between public posts, not when Wu accepted the role. Curran’s comment is his view. No source we read describes the Claude Code exits as a reorganization.
The Bottom Line
Cat Wu, described by Business Insider as Claude Code’s head of product, said on X that Wu is joining OpenAI to lead product management for Core Products, about 27 hours after the post announcing the exit from Anthropic, by our arithmetic. Wu wrote of working with @thsottiaux, who welcomed Wu in a quote post; the post does not give a start date or define Core Products.
95,000+ executives read Business Engineer for the AI strategy frameworks cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
A note on sourcing. The role, quotes and times are from Cat Wu’s posts on X of 3 and 5 November 2026, read via the posts themselves; the welcome is from the @thsottiaux post and the comment from Andrew Curran’s post. Business Insider’s description and the 45x revenue arithmetic are as stated in our earlier pieces. Intervals are our arithmetic from post timestamps.
