The cost of insuring SpaceX’s debt against default rose to a new peak on Thursday. SpaceX’s 5-year credit default swaps widened 24.5 basis points to 286.56, according to Markit data cited by Walter Bloomberg (@DeItaone) on X at 17:33 UTC on 5 November. Wall St Engine had posted at 15:58 UTC that the cost to insure SpaceX debt against default hit a record high.
By our arithmetic, the move takes the spread up from about 262.06 basis points, a widening of about 9.3% in a day. At 286.56 basis points, protecting $10 million of SpaceX debt for a year costs about $286,560, also our arithmetic.

The key insight: SpaceX’s 5-year credit default swaps widened 24.5 basis points to a new peak of 286.56, according to Markit data cited on X. By our arithmetic, that is up about 9.3% from about 262.06 in a day, and protecting $10 million of SpaceX debt now costs about $286,560 a year.
What Was Reported
Walter Bloomberg posted the Markit figure at 17:33 UTC on 5 November: SpaceX’s 5-year credit default swaps widened to a new peak, up 24.5 bps to 286.56.
Wall St Engine posted at 15:58 UTC on 5 November that the cost to insure SpaceX debt against default hit a record high. The post gives no level.
A credit default swap is a contract that pays out if a borrower defaults; its spread is the yearly price of that protection, in basis points of the amount covered. A wider spread means buyers are paying more to insure the same debt.

The Debt Behind the Spread
SpaceX’s AI build-out is financed partly with debt. We reported on 26 October that SpaceX disclosed, in an 8-K, a binding commitment for a master finance lease with an entity managed by Apollo Global Management: SpaceX’s $40B GPU Deal Is a 5-Year Apollo Finance Lease. Earlier, SpaceX’s $40B Chip Debt to Cost 7.75% to 8.3%, Sources Say carried Semafor’s reported rates, and SpaceX’s $40B Off-Book Chip Debt Snags on AI Credit Turmoil carried Bloomberg’s report that Goldman Sachs was leading discussions with investors headed by Apollo.
Sam Badawi posted at 17:47 UTC that the widening came a day after Goldman Sachs and Apollo reportedly started looking for buyers for part of SpaceX’s $40B AI chip financing, on top of the $25B of bonds it sold after its June IPO. We have not confirmed that report.
Connecting the Coverage
The swaps moved on a day of broad losses in AI stocks: Nvidia Leads $930B Drop in 12 AI Stocks by 10:04 A.M. ET. A day earlier, Tesla and SpaceX Close Down $126B the Day After the Vote. SpaceX’s data-center plans are in SpaceX Town Hall Pitches 6 GW AI Campus, $3.6B Grid Plan, and credit for the wider AI build-out came under scrutiny in Microsoft Said to Tighten Oversight of Nebius, IREN, Nscale. SpaceX’s chip commitments are in SpaceX to Prepay $7B in $47.3B Nvidia Chip Deal, Sources Say.
The Structural Read
As we read the move, the credit market is pricing SpaceX’s AI build-out separately from its share price: protection got dearer on a day AI stocks fell.
As we read our earlier coverage, the chip financing runs through a finance lease and privately placed debt, so the swap price is one of the few daily public signals on how lenders see that risk.

Three Implications
FOR SPACEX A wider spread is a higher market price for protection on its debt; SpaceX has not commented.
FOR ITS LENDERS Our earlier coverage reported Goldman Sachs and Apollo at the centre of the $40B chip financing.
FOR AI CREDIT The move came on a day when AI stocks fell broadly, per our same-day coverage.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.
The framework says: “It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing — and the financial architecture is starting to invert.”
As we read it, SpaceX’s swap spread is one price on that financing: the cost of insuring the borrower rose to a peak as AI stocks fell. The framework itself does not discuss SpaceX’s swaps.
What Is Not Established
The 286.56 level and the 24.5 bps move come from Markit data as cited on X; we have not seen the Markit data directly. The prior level is derived from the reported move. The report that Goldman Sachs and Apollo began looking for buyers for part of the chip financing reaches us through an X post and is not confirmed. SpaceX has not commented on the swap prices. A wider spread is a market price for default protection, not a rating action or a default.
The Bottom Line
The yearly cost of protecting SpaceX’s debt against default rose 24.5 basis points to a reported peak of 286.56 on 5 November, about 9.3% in a day by our arithmetic, on a day when AI stocks fell broadly.
