Cost to Insure Intel’s Debt Hits a Record After Weak Results

Bloomberg reported on 30 October that the cost of protecting the debt of numerous US technology heavyweights against default hit fresh record highs, with disappointing quarterly reports from Intel and Amazon spurring concerns on whether the borrowing financing the AI boom will pay off.

The protection price for Intel bonds for five years rose as much as 22.4 basis points on Friday morning to 127.9 basis points a year, according to ICE Data Services, as cited by Bloomberg. On $10 million of Intel bonds, 127.9 basis points comes to $127,900 a year, by our arithmetic.

Business Pill · FINANCIAL CONDITIONS

A short Business Engineer explainer on financial conditions: how rates, spreads and stock prices together set what borrowing costs. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Intel or any company in this story.

The key insight: Bloomberg reported on 30 October 2026 that five-year protection on Intel bonds rose as much as 22.4 basis points to a record 127.9 basis points a year, according to ICE Data Services; on $10 million of Intel bonds that is $127,900 a year, by our arithmetic.

What Bloomberg Reported

Bloomberg wrote that the 22.4 basis-point rise and the 127.9 basis-point level for Intel’s five-year protection are “Both are records”. It said the cost also reached a new high for Broadcom, and levels last seen in early 2019 for AMD.

A credit default swap pays out if a borrower defaults, so its price is a market reading of default risk, as we explained in our CoreWeave credit piece. The price is quoted in basis points a year: 100 basis points is 1% of the amount protected.

Bloomberg tied the move to Intel’s and Amazon’s quarterly reports. Intel shares were trading 30.3% below their 29 October close during Friday’s session, according to Yahoo Finance, as we reported in Intel’s 30% drop.

Five-year protection on Intel bonds: 127.9 basis points a year on Friday morning, 30 October 2026, a record, after a rise of as much as 22.4 basis points, also a record, according to ICE Data Services as cited by Bloomberg. The ~105.5 basis-point starting level and the dollar costs on $10 million are our arithmetic, illustrations rather than quoted trades.

What the Price Means in Dollars

By our arithmetic, a buyer protecting $10 million of Intel bonds at 127.9 basis points would pay $127,900 a year. Before Friday’s rise of as much as 22.4 basis points, the level implied by Bloomberg’s figures is about 105.5 basis points, or about $105,500 a year on the same amount.

These are illustrations computed from the figures Bloomberg published, not quoted trades.

The Week’s Borrowing

The rise came in a week of heavy AI financing. By our arithmetic, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta filed $142.5 billion of headline financing with the SEC, as we reported in the SEC disclosures piece. We covered Amazon’s filing in Amazon Can Borrow Up to $80B Against the Hardware It Buys.

The Structural Read

As we read Bloomberg’s passage, the record is in the price of insurance rather than in a missed payment: both the 127.9 basis-point level and the 22.4 basis-point rise are described as records, and no default is reported.

As we read the arithmetic, the move took the yearly cost of protecting $10 million of Intel bonds from about $105,500 to $127,900, illustrations computed from Bloomberg’s figures rather than quoted trades.

As we read the passage, Intel was not alone: Bloomberg said the cost also reached a new high for Broadcom and levels last seen in early 2019 for AMD, without giving their levels in the part we could read.

“The cost also reached a new high for chip rival Broadcom Inc. and levels last seen in early 2019 for Advanced Micro Devices Inc.”

Three Implications

FOR INTEL’S LENDERS Bloomberg reported that the price of five-year protection on Intel bonds hit a record 127.9 basis points a year on Friday morning.

FOR CHIPMAKERS’ CREDIT Bloomberg said Broadcom’s protection cost reached a new high and AMD’s reached levels last seen in early 2019.

FOR THE AI FINANCING WAVE Bloomberg tied the move to concerns on whether the borrowing binge financing the AI boom will pay off; by our arithmetic Amazon, Microsoft and Meta filed $142.5 billion of headline financing that week.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.

The framework puts it this way: “The $1T capex cycle is being underwritten by a $1T concentrated demand commitment from two counterparties whose combined free cash flow is deeply negative.”

As we read it, default-protection prices are one place where credit markets show how they price that financing. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss Intel’s protection costs.

What Is Not Established

Only the opening passage of Bloomberg’s article was readable to us; it gives figures for Intel alone. It does not give protection prices for Broadcom, AMD, Amazon or other companies in that passage, and we do not report any.

The Bottom Line

Bloomberg, citing ICE Data Services, reported that five-year protection on Intel bonds reached a record 127.9 basis points a year on 30 October, with a new high for Broadcom and AMD’s cost at levels last seen in early 2019. On $10 million of Intel bonds, that is $127,900 a year, by our arithmetic.
