Advantest, the Japanese maker of chip-testing machines, raised its full-year operating income forecast to ¥967.0 billion from ¥846.0 billion, according to its fiscal 2026 second-quarter results release of 28 October. By our arithmetic that is a 14.3% increase on the forecast it gave in July.
It also raised its net sales forecast for the year to March 2027 to ¥1,863.0 billion from ¥1,714.0 billion, an 8.7% increase by our arithmetic.
Business Pill · Operating Leverage
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on operating leverage, how profit can grow faster than revenue once fixed costs are covered. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Advantest.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Advantest’s second-quarter operating income of ¥266.8 billion was 2.5 times the ¥108.4 billion of a year earlier, and 18.8% above the ¥224.5 billion it had forecast for the quarter in July.
The Quarter
In the July-to-September quarter, sales were ¥477.7 billion, up 81.7% from a year earlier, and operating income was ¥266.8 billion, a 55.9% operating margin, according to the company’s presentation slides. The slides describe sales and profits as reaching “new quarterly records”.
In July, Advantest had forecast ¥434.5 billion of sales and ¥224.5 billion of operating income for this quarter, according to the same slide. By our arithmetic the quarter came in 9.9% above its own sales forecast and 18.8% above its operating income forecast.

What the Company Says Is Driving It
The release says that “as production volumes of AI-related high-performance semiconductors increased and semiconductor complexity grew with the adoption of advanced packaging and other technologies, customers continued to invest actively in our testers.”
In its test-system segment, it says that “sales of SoC test systems grew, driven primarily by rising production volumes and increasing complexity of AI-related SoC semiconductors.” It adds that, amid growing investment in data centers, sales of products for DRAM and non-volatile memory also increased.
The release also says the depreciation of the yen against the US dollar contributed to the results. Its average rate was 160 yen to the dollar in the six months, against 146 yen a year earlier.
Capacity and Supply
The slides say Advantest has reached an annual production capacity of more than 5,000 SoC test systems and is “aiming to reach the 10,000 systems target well ahead of the original schedule”. Its capital expenditure forecast for the year rose to ¥60.0 billion from ¥50.0 billion.
On the market, the slides say: “Barring geopolitical risks and macroeconomic factors, we expect the industry to remain supply constrained, with end-customer demand continuing to exceed supply in CY27”. The release adds that “demand for key components such as memory semiconductors continues to exceed supply as AI investments expand across industries.”
The Second-Half Guide
The new forecast implies second-half sales of ¥1,017.8 billion and operating income of ¥510.2 billion, a 50.1% margin, against 54.0% in the first half, according to the forecast slide. The slides say the margin outlook factors in “the impact of higher component costs”, offset by “stronger SoC tester sales and an improved product mix”.
The forecast assumes 150 yen to the dollar for the second half, against 161 yen in the second quarter.
Connecting the Coverage
The same demand shows up in KLA’s $4.7 billion quarterly guide, in TSMC’s reported plant deal for CoWoS packaging and in the memory results at Samsung and SK Hynix.
The Structural Read
As we read the release, Advantest ties the raise to two things it names: rising production volumes of AI-related high-performance semiconductors, and growing chip complexity as advanced packaging is adopted.
As we read the half-year split, the new forecast implies second-half operating income of ¥510.2 billion on sales of ¥1,017.8 billion, a 50.1% margin by our arithmetic, below the 54.0% of the first half; the release assumes a 150 yen dollar for the second half, against a first-half average of 160.
The company says it expects the semiconductor tester market to reach a new record high in CY2026; that is Advantest’s expectation, not ours.

Three Implications
FOR ADVANTEST The release says it will accelerate efforts to expand production capacity while strengthening supply chain resilience; its capex forecast rises to ¥60.0 billion from ¥50.0 billion.
FOR CHIPMAKERS The release says customers continued to invest actively in its testers as AI chip volumes and complexity grew.
FOR THE YEN READ The release says the yen’s depreciation against the dollar contributed to record first-half results, with a 160 yen average rate against 146 a year earlier.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Nine Layers of AI.
The framework argues: “This entire ecosystem has been shaped by constraints, bottlenecks, chokepoints, and scarcity at every layer.”
Advantest’s release describes one such constraint at the test step: customers investing in testers as AI chips grow more complex, and the company expanding capacity across its supply chain to meet that demand. The framework does not discuss Advantest or chip testing.
What Is Not Established
The release and slides do not name customers and do not give the share of sales that comes from AI-related chips. Part of the rise in yen-denominated results reflects the weaker yen, which the release itself notes. Share-price moves reported elsewhere are not used in this piece.
The Bottom Line
Advantest raised its full-year operating income forecast by 14.3%, by our arithmetic, after a quarter it describes as a record, and it says it expects the industry to remain supply constrained, with end-customer demand continuing to exceed supply in 2027.
