Samsung Electronics reported on 29 October 2026 third-quarter revenue of KRW 195.3 trillion, up 127% from a year earlier, and operating profit of KRW 107.4 trillion, up 783%, according to its 3Q 2026 earnings presentation. The company says it “Became the first global tech company ever to exceed KRW 100T in quarterly operating profit”.
By our arithmetic, its Device Solutions (DS) semiconductor division, which the presentation says earned KRW 106.5 trillion of operating profit, supplied about 99.2% of the company total. The DX division, covering mobile, TV and home appliances, lost KRW 0.8 trillion.
Business Pill · Operating Leverage
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on operating leverage, how profit can grow faster than revenue once fixed costs are covered. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Samsung.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Samsung’s chip division earned about 99.2% of the company’s KRW 107.4 trillion third-quarter operating profit, and about KRW 23.2 trillion more than SK hynix.
Where the Profit Came From
The presentation puts DS sales at KRW 147.1 trillion, up 15% from the second quarter, with operating profit at 72% of revenue. Memory sales were KRW 140.7 trillion, against KRW 120.8 trillion in the second quarter and KRW 26.7 trillion a year earlier.
Samsung says “Memory achieved record earnings by significantly ramping up HBM4 sales on the strength of product competitiveness and proactively meeting growing demand for server SSDs”. It adds that the market price “increased across all applications, led by strong demand momentum for servers”.
The rest of the company was small by comparison. The presentation shows Samsung Display (SDC) at KRW 1.1 trillion of operating profit and Harman at KRW 0.6 trillion, against the DX division’s KRW 0.8 trillion loss on KRW 52.1 trillion of sales.
By our arithmetic, DS supplied about 99.7% of operating profit in the second quarter too, when it earned KRW 89.2 trillion of a KRW 89.5 trillion total. A year earlier, in the third quarter of 2025, DS earned KRW 7.0 trillion of a KRW 12.2 trillion total.

Record Profit, Two Framings
Two framings ran at the same time. Reuters headlined “Samsung posts record profit in Q3 on AI chip boom”, while Bloomberg headlined “Samsung Chip Profit Misses Estimates Lifted by Resurgent AI Hope”.
CNBC compared the results with LSEG SmartEstimates: revenue of 195.25 trillion won against 195.79 trillion won expected, and operating profit of 107.44 trillion won against 107.66 trillion won expected. The estimates are those outlets’ figures, not Samsung’s.
Against SK Hynix
SK hynix reported a day earlier, on 28 October 2026, revenue of 104.6155 trillion won and operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won, an operating margin of 80%, according to its own release. Its second-quarter operating profit was 60.5426 trillion won.
By our arithmetic, Samsung’s DS operating profit exceeded SK hynix’s by about KRW 23.2 trillion in the third quarter, at a lower margin: 72% against 80%. By our arithmetic, a year earlier the order was reversed, with SK hynix at about KRW 11.4 trillion against Samsung DS at KRW 7.0 trillion.
The comparison is not like for like. Samsung’s DS division includes its Foundry and System LSI businesses as well as memory, while SK hynix is a memory maker.
What Samsung Says Comes Next
For the fourth quarter, Samsung’s memory outlook is to “Further increase sales of HBM, Server DRAM and SSDs”. For 2027 it expects “AI infra CapEx to accelerate as AI ecosystem expands” and says “Surging AI-driven demand likely to further tighten supply shortages compared with CY26”.
In Foundry, the presentation reports “Continued order wins centered on 2nm HPC customers, including major hyperscalers”, and lists for 2027 “the start of operations at the first fab in Taylor, U.S.”
The presentation puts net cash at KRW 197.6 trillion and third-quarter cash dividends at KRW 30 trillion. It says total shareholder returns for 2026 are estimated at KRW 90 to 110 trillion, with the remainder to include “a substantial share repurchase and cancellation program”.
Connecting the Coverage
We covered Samsung’s preliminary figure in Samsung’s Q3 guidance, SK hynix’s quarter in SK Hynix’s record Q3, and chip-equipment demand in KLA’s guidance.
The Structural Read
As we read the presentation, Samsung is now a chip company in its earnings: the DX division that sells phones, TVs and appliances lost KRW 0.8 trillion while DS earned KRW 106.5 trillion.
As we read the two releases side by side, both Korean memory makers report record quarters on the same driver, rising memory prices led by server demand, with SK hynix converting more of its revenue into operating profit (80% against DS’s 72%).
Samsung’s own outlook says AI-driven demand is likely to tighten supply further in 2027 than in 2026; that is the company’s expectation, not ours.
Samsung Electronics, 3Q 2026 earnings presentation
“Became the first global tech company ever to exceed KRW 100T in quarterly operating profit”
Three Implications
FOR SAMSUNG The presentation says total shareholder returns for 2026 are estimated at KRW 90 to 110 trillion, with a substantial share repurchase and cancellation program to come.
FOR MEMORY BUYERS Samsung says the market price increased across all applications in the quarter and expects supply shortages to tighten further in 2027.
FOR SK HYNIX By our arithmetic, Samsung’s DS operating profit passed SK hynix’s in both of the last two quarters, after trailing it a year earlier.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.
The framework argues: “HBM growth is outpacing accelerator demand, making memory the rate-limiting factor in the AI scaling equation.”
Samsung’s presentation credits its record memory earnings to a significant ramp in HBM4 sales and higher prices across all applications. The framework does not discuss Samsung’s third quarter.
What Is Not Established
The presentation does not give HBM revenue, HBM4 shipment volumes or customer names, and it does not split DS operating profit between Memory, Foundry and System LSI. Its cash-flow summary shows purchases of PP&E of KRW 26.9 trillion in the quarter, against KRW 14.1 trillion in the second quarter, but gives no capex guidance.
The estimate comparisons come from LSEG via CNBC and from Bloomberg’s headline; we did not read Bloomberg’s article beyond its headline.
The Bottom Line
Samsung reported KRW 107.4 trillion of third-quarter operating profit, and by our arithmetic about 99.2% of it came from its chip division. That division earned about KRW 23.2 trillion more than SK hynix in the quarter, by our arithmetic, at a lower margin.

Correction, 29 Oct 2026: an earlier version of this piece gave third-quarter Memory sales as KRW 127.5 trillion. That is the Device Solutions division’s second-quarter sales figure. Samsung’s presentation puts third-quarter Memory sales at KRW 140.7 trillion.
A note on sourcing. Samsung’s figures come from its 3Q 2026 earnings presentation of 29 October 2026, and SK hynix’s from its own Q3 2026 results release of 28 October 2026. Estimate comparisons are CNBC’s (LSEG) and Bloomberg’s; shares and differences are our arithmetic; linked earlier pieces carry their own sources.
