Samsung’s Record Profit Took a 9.5 Trillion Won Finance Hit

Samsung Electronics’ operating profit rose 20% from the second quarter to a record KRW 107.4 trillion, but its net profit rose 4.9%, to KRW 75.1 trillion, according to the company’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call presentation. The difference sits in one line of the income statement: net finance income and expenses went from a KRW 4.7 trillion gain in the second quarter to a KRW 9.5 trillion loss in the third.

By our arithmetic, that KRW 14.2 trillion swing equals about 79% of the KRW 17.9 trillion increase in operating profit, and profit before tax grew 4.3%.

The key insight: By our arithmetic from Samsung’s presentation, the net finance line moved by KRW 14.2 trillion between the second and third quarters, about 79% of the KRW 17.9 trillion rise in operating profit.

What the Presentation Shows

The presentation puts third-quarter revenue at KRW 195.3 trillion, up 14% from the second quarter and 127% from a year earlier, and operating profit at KRW 107.4 trillion, a 55.0% margin. It says Samsung “Became the first global tech company ever to exceed KRW 100T in quarterly operating profit”.

Its income-statement appendix lists finance income and expenses of KRW 1.2 trillion in the third quarter of 2025, KRW 4.7 trillion in the second quarter of 2026 and minus KRW 9.5 trillion in the third quarter of 2026. Profit before income tax was KRW 98.5 trillion, or 50.5% of sales, against KRW 94.4 trillion, or 55.1%, in the second quarter.

Income tax was KRW 23.4 trillion, against KRW 22.8 trillion. Net profit was KRW 75.1 trillion, or 38.5% of sales, against KRW 71.6 trillion, or 41.8%. The equity method line added KRW 0.4 trillion and other non-operating items KRW 0.2 trillion.

What Was Posted on X

The Wall St Engine account posted a summary of Samsung’s third-quarter 2026 results on 29 October 2026, converting won figures at $1 = KRW 1,336. It lists net profit of $56.2 billion against an estimate of $64.9 billion and notes that net profit includes a KRW 9.5 trillion net finance loss, against a KRW 4.7 trillion gain in the second quarter. This piece checks the finance line against Samsung’s own presentation.

Where the Operating Gain Went

By our arithmetic from the appendix, the KRW 9.5 trillion finance loss equals about 8.8% of the quarter’s operating profit. Net profit was about 69.9% of operating profit in the third quarter, against about 80.0% in the second.

The tax line does not explain the gap: by our arithmetic, income tax was about 23.8% of profit before tax in the third quarter and about 24.2% in the second. Common earnings per share rose 6% from the second quarter to KRW 11,462, which the presentation lists alongside a 536% rise from a year earlier.

What the Wall St Engine Post Lists

A post by the @wallstengine account on X lists net profit of $56.2 billion against an estimate of $64.9 billion, and earnings per share of $8.58 against an estimate of $10.21, using a conversion rate of $1 = KRW 1,336. The post does not name the source of the estimates. By our arithmetic, its net profit figure is about 13.4% below the estimate it cites.

The post notes that net profit “includes a โ‚ฉ9.5T (~$7.1B) net finance loss, vs a โ‚ฉ4.7T gain in Q2”. It also says that “Weaker USD/EUR cut operating profit by ~โ‚ฉ10T (~$7.5B) vs Q2”. That second figure concerns operating profit, not the finance line, and does not appear in the presentation.

The Cash Side of the Quarter

The presentation’s cash-flow summary shows cash flows from operating activities of KRW 98.6 trillion in the third quarter, against KRW 105.1 trillion in the second. By our arithmetic, that is a decline of about 6% in a quarter when operating profit rose 20%.

Over the same three months, the balance sheet in the presentation shows accounts receivable rising from KRW 96.4 trillion to KRW 106.1 trillion. Purchases of property, plant and equipment were KRW 26.9 trillion, acquisitions of treasury stock KRW 12.5 trillion and dividends paid KRW 2.5 trillion. Net cash stood at KRW 197.6 trillion at 30 September.

The Structural Read

As we read the appendix, the quarter’s profit growth sits above the operating line; below it, one line moved from a KRW 4.7 trillion gain to a KRW 9.5 trillion loss.

By our arithmetic, net profit was about 69.9% of operating profit in the third quarter, against about 80.0% in the second, while income tax stayed at about 24% of profit before tax in both quarters.

As we read the cash-flow summary, operating cash flow of KRW 98.6 trillion fell about 6% from the second quarter while receivables rose KRW 9.7 trillion; the presentation does not link the two.

“Surging AI-driven demand likely to further tighten supply shortages compared with CY26”

Three Implications

FOR MEMORY BUYERS The presentation lists, for 2027, that AI infrastructure capex is expected to accelerate and that surging AI-driven demand is likely to further tighten supply shortages compared with 2026.

FOR SHAREHOLDERS The presentation says total shareholder returns for 2026 are estimated at KRW 90 to 110 trillion, with KRW 35 trillion already planned or completed and KRW 55 to 75 trillion remaining.

FOR READING THE QUARTER The presentation says it was provided before the external review was completed and that the review may cause some parts of the document to change.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.

The framework puts it this way: “Memory is becoming the new compute.”

As we read it, Samsung’s quarter shows that view at the operating line, where memory sales and chip profit set records. The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss Samsung’s finance line or this quarter.

What Is Not Established

The presentation does not break down the KRW 9.5 trillion finance line, and it does not say what drove the move from the second-quarter gain. It also states that it was provided before the external review of the results was completed and that the review “may cause some parts of this document to change”.

The DRAM and NAND price and volume figures in the @wallstengine post, and its operating-profit currency figure, do not appear in the presentation; this piece does not rely on them. We covered the operating side of the same quarter, where chips earned 99% of operating profit, in an earlier piece.
