Business Pill · Distribution Advantage
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage: why reach decides who gets tried. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Apple or Siri AI.
Apple says it will charge for use of Siri AI beyond a daily limit. Its iCloud page says “Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, including but not limited to Siri AI”, and adds: “Expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future”. Apple has not said what the fee is.
On Apple’s earnings call on 2 November, chief executive John Ternus said Siri handles over 2.5 billion requests a day, and that server-based AI features, including Siri AI and photo editing, will have usage limits, with paid upgrades via iCloud+, according to a summary posted by Wall St Engine, an account that relays earnings calls. We had not seen a transcript of the call’s question-and-answer session when we wrote.
By our arithmetic, 2.5 billion requests a day is about 912 billion a year. Apple gave its installed base on the same call as more than 2.5 billion active devices, which works out at roughly one Siri request per active device per day. Both are floors, so that ratio is rough.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Siri’s 2.5 billion requests a day, as relayed from the 2 November call, come to about 912 billion a year, roughly one request per active Apple device per day; Apple’s pages say server-side AI use beyond a daily limit will cost a fee.
What Apple Has Written Down
Apple set out the rules in a support article dated 9 September 2026. It says: “Some Apple Intelligence features rely on powerful server-side models and have usage limits to ensure a high-quality, reliable experience for everyone”.
The article lists the features as including Siri AI, its photo editing tools Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing, Image Playground, its cloud models in Shortcuts, and developer apps that use Apple’s models in Private Cloud Compute.
It says: “If you reach a limit in a particular feature, that feature will become available again after a time out period”, and “Limits may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors”. It ends that passage: “Increased access to such features will be available for a fee”.
The article also says: “Starting with the 2027 software releases, users can experience the next generation of Apple Intelligence, with enhanced access to features that rely on server-side models”. It does not give the size of any limit.

What Was Said on the Call
The cost side was in the prepared remarks. Chief financial officer Kevan Parekh guided gross margin for the December quarter to 45% to 46%, and said: “This includes primarily the impact of higher memory costs, as well as some costs related to the ramp of Siri AI”, according to the Six Colors transcript.
In the question-and-answer session, Ternus was asked whether AI agents threaten Apple’s services business, according to TheTranscript, another account that relays calls. It reported that he cited Siri’s 2.5 billion-plus daily requests and quoted him: “As far as agentic capabilities, we think these are promising tools for users. We just want to make sure that users are aware of what they’re giving access to”.
In the prepared remarks, according to the Six Colors transcript, Apple said it has over 1.5 billion paid subscriptions and referred to its “iCloud Plus plans that now include Apple TV and Apple Arcade in more than 100 countries and regions”. Apple has not said which iCloud+ tiers, if any, will carry more AI use.
How Apple Got Here
Apple raised the idea on its 30 July call. Asked by Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng how Siri AI usage informs its thinking on compute costs and recovering some of them through iCloud+, Tim Cook, then chief executive, said: “We do believe there will be people that want to use it a lot, and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud Plus where people can buy up the stack on iCloud Plus”, according to the Six Colors transcript of that call.
He also said: “there’s also the ability when people use it a lot for them to move up on an iCloud plan as well, and so what the balance of that is, is a bit uncertain at the moment”. We covered those remarks in July.
Apple launched Siri AI in beta for US English users in September and added French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in October, Ternus said in his prepared remarks on 2 November. Its fourth-quarter earnings release now names compute among the things it relies on third parties for, as we set out earlier on 2 November.
Where the Prices Sit
Apple sells iCloud+ in the US at $0.99 a month for 50GB, $2.99 for 200GB, $9.99 for 2TB, $29.99 for 6TB and $59.99 for 12TB, according to its iCloud page. ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro cost $20 a month and Google AI Pro $19.99, as listed in our AI subscription plans tracker.
By our arithmetic, $20 is about twice the 2TB iCloud+ price and two-thirds of the 6TB price. That compares list prices only: iCloud+ is sold as storage and privacy features, and the AI plans as model access, and Apple has not priced the extra AI use.
Apple Joins a Wider Shift to Metered AI
Apple is the latest large consumer company to tie AI use to limits and payment. Elon Musk wrote on 1 November that “The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue”, as we reported. OpenAI says that from December, Plus, Pro and Business allowances will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex and measured in tokens.
Prices are falling at the same time. We have covered Anthropic’s reports on what Claude spending buys and a 92% fall in the price of OpenAI’s Luna since July. Apple’s page names no price, so it does not yet show where its fee will sit against those plans.
The Structural Read
As we read it, Apple is moving the cost of heavy AI use toward the users who generate it, the same direction as the AI labs’ usage allowances, while keeping a free daily amount on its devices.
As we read it, the cost is already visible: Apple named some costs related to the ramp of Siri AI in its December-quarter gross margin guide of 45% to 46%.
As we read it, iCloud+ is the likely route because Cook named it in July; Apple has not said which tier, or what price, so the fee itself is not yet known.

Three Implications
FOR IPHONE USERS Apple says Siri AI, its photo editing tools, Image Playground and other server-side features have daily limits, and that a feature becomes available again after a time out period once a limit is reached.
FOR APPLE’S SERVICES LINE Apple reported over 1.5 billion paid subscriptions on 2 November; paid AI access through iCloud+ would sit inside that services business, but Apple has given no AI revenue figure.
FOR READERS COMPARING AI PLANS ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro list at $20 a month, about twice Apple’s 2TB iCloud+ tier at $9.99, by our arithmetic; Apple has not priced extra AI use.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Subsidized AGI Economy.
The framework says: “The casual user pays $20 and uses 2% of capacity — they are the cross-subsidy.”
As we read it, Apple’s daily limits apply the same split to Siri AI: a free daily amount for most users, a fee for heavier use. The framework was written about AI lab subscriptions and does not discuss Apple.

What Is Not Established
Apple has not published the size of any daily limit, the price of extra use, which iCloud+ tiers would include more use, or a start date beyond its reference to the 2027 software releases. Ternus’s remarks on limits and iCloud+ and his 2.5 billion figure come from accounts that relay calls, not from an Apple transcript, so we do not quote his exact words on pricing.
The yearly request figure, the per-device ratio and the price comparisons are our arithmetic. The AI plan prices are from our tracker, which records the companies’ pricing pages; plans and prices change. We did not contact Apple.
The Bottom Line
Apple’s own pages say Siri AI and its other server-side AI features are subject to daily limits, and that more use will cost a fee. On 2 November it said Siri AI ramp costs are part of its gross margin outlook, and Ternus said Siri handles over 2.5 billion requests a day, relays of the call reported. Apple has not said what the fee will be.
