Apple Sheds $166B in Early Trade as Memory Squeezes Margin

Apple shares traded at $326.88 at 14:36 UTC on 3 November, 3.38% below the $338.32 close of 2 November, according to Nasdaq.com quote data, in the first regular session since Apple reported its fiscal fourth quarter. The regular session opened at 14:30 UTC.

By our arithmetic, a $11.44 fall on the 14,532,182,000 shares the 10-K says were outstanding on 23 October is about $166 billion of stock market value.

Business Pill ยท The Memory Wall

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on memory as a constraint. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Apple’s share price or results.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, Apple’s $11.44 fall to $326.88 at 14:36 UTC on 3 November is about $166 billion of market value, about 76 times the $2.2 billion of December-quarter gross profit that the margin step Apple guided represents.

How the Price Moved

Before the open, Nasdaq.com showed Apple at $324.41 at 8:59 a.m. New York time, or 13:59 UTC, down 4.11% in pre-market trading. In Nasdaq.com’s minute data, the first regular-session reading was $329.94 at 14:30 UTC; the session low so far was $326.25 at 14:35 UTC and the high $329.94 at 14:30 UTC.

24/7 Wall St, in a report published at 13:49 UTC, said Apple had fallen 4% after beating fourth-quarter estimates, with chief executive John Ternus warning that memory pricing is “unprecedented” and the December-quarter gross margin guided to 45% to 46%. It put that range below a 46.3% analyst estimate.

What Apple Guided

CNBC reported that chief financial officer Kevan Parekh said gross margin would be between 45% and 46% in the December quarter, “lower than in the fourth quarter”. Apple reported a fourth-quarter gross margin of 47.9%, as we set out in our gross profit piece.

Apple put the September-quarter step down to memory. In our piece on the call, we set out Parekh’s words and the margin bridge: the 1.4-point step implied for December, mostly memory by Apple’s account, is about $2.2 billion of gross profit, by our arithmetic. By the same arithmetic, the market value lost at 14:36 UTC is about 76 times that $2.2 billion.

24/7 Wall St said Parekh pinned the decline “mostly on higher memory costs”, with Siri AI cloud expenses and hardware revenue deferrals adding to the pressure.

The Commitments Behind the Guide

Apple’s supply commitments were the other memory line in the results. We covered the $33 billion step in manufacturing purchase obligations Apple gave on the call, and the $117.0 billion of purchase commitments in the 10-K it filed on 3 November.

The 10-K says Apple “expects these trends to intensify for memory and storage components”. Our guidance piece covers the 7% to 10% revenue range for the December quarter.

The Structural Read

As we read the results, the margin guide carried the memory story into the price: Apple reported a fourth-quarter gross margin of 47.9% and guided 45% to 46% for the December quarter, according to CNBC.

As we read the filings, the same costs show up in Apple’s balance of commitments: $117.0 billion of manufacturing and other purchase obligations at 26 September, which we covered separately.

Three Implications

FOR SHAREHOLDERS By our arithmetic, the move on 14,532,182,000 shares is about $166 billion of market value at 14:36 UTC; the figure moves with the price.

FOR APPLE’S MARGIN CNBC reported a December-quarter gross margin guide of 45% to 46%, against 47.9% reported for the fourth quarter.

FOR THE MEMORY TRADE 24/7 Wall St said Microsoft and Meta, both buyers of AI infrastructure, were little changed while Apple fell, and tied the gap to memory chips.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.

The framework argues: “Memory is becoming the new compute”.

As we read it, Apple’s December-quarter margin guide is a consumer-hardware view of that constraint. The framework is the owner’s argument and does not discuss Apple’s results or share price.

What Is Not Established

The reasons for a share-price move are the market’s, not Apple’s; the explanations here are those 24/7 Wall St and CNBC gave. 24/7 Wall St also noted that Apple was down 6% over the past week and Alphabet 12%, which it said “cuts against a purely Apple-specific story”.

The price is a point in a moving session, and the market value figure moves with it. Apple does not report the gross margin effect of memory alone in its filings.

The Bottom Line

Apple traded at $326.88 at 14:36 UTC, 3.38% below its 2 November close, a fall of about $166 billion in market value by our arithmetic. 24/7 Wall St tied the reaction to a December-quarter gross margin guide of 45% to 46%, which it said Parekh pinned mostly on higher memory costs.
