Google Takes Dreambeans to India, Its First Market Beyond US

Google has taken Dreambeans, its experimental Google Labs app that turns data from a user’s own Google apps into illustrated daily stories, to India, which TechCrunch reports is its first market outside the U.S. Google’s India blog says the app is open to people in India aged 18 and over, on Android and iOS, across 14 languages.

The India post is dated 3 November, 54 days after Google opened Dreambeans to all U.S. accounts on 10 September, by our count. The step before that, from a June debut limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers, took 99 days by the same count.

Business Pill · Distribution Advantage

A short explainer on distribution advantage: how an incumbent’s existing reach shapes what it can launch. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Google or Dreambeans.

The key insight: As we read it, Dreambeans is a product only a company holding a user’s mail, calendar, photos, searches and viewing history can build: Google’s India post lists six of its own apps as the story sources. Google took it to India, its second market, 54 days after opening it to all U.S. accounts, by our count.

What Google Announced

Google’s India post is headed “Dreambeans is now available to everyone in India”. It reads: “Starting today, Dreambeans, an experimental app from Google Labs that creates personalized daily story collections, is expanding to people in India (18+).”

The post names the languages: “Dreambeans is available on Android and iOS across 14 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Assamese, Nepali”. TechCrunch counts 13 local languages alongside English.

Its data sources are listed in the same post: “Dreambeans brews your stories using information from the Google apps you select, including Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube”. That is six Google apps, by our count.

Who could use Dreambeans, by the date of Google's own posts: 3 June 2026, eligible Google AI Ultra subscribers
Who could use Dreambeans, by the date of Google’s own posts: 3 June 2026, eligible Google AI Ultra subscribers (18+) in the U.S., others on a waitlist; 10 September, all U.S. accounts (18+); 3 November (UTC), people in India (18+), 14 languages. The 99-day and 54-day gaps are our count. ‘First market outside the U.S.’ is TechCrunch’s description.

Why India, According to Google

Google said it picked India because of strong interest from Indian users seeking access to the app and the widespread use of its services in the country, TechCrunch reports. India stood out for its high overlap of users across Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos, Google product manager Gozde Oznur said during a press briefing, according to TechCrunch.

Users can pick only one language at a time for their stories, TechCrunch reports. The app can draw on information across Google services in multiple languages but cannot currently generate stories that mix languages, Oznur said, according to TechCrunch.

Dreambeans is available only to personal Gmail account holders, not enterprise users, and generated stories are visible only to the account holder, Oznur said, per TechCrunch. Users choose which services to connect, can disconnect them at any time and can delete their Dreambeans data in the app.

How the Gates Opened

Google’s June post said the app was “rolling out starting today for eligible Google AI Ultra subscribers (18+) in the U.S.”, with others able to join a waitlist. It said Dreambeans uses “Personal Intelligence and Nano Banana 2”.

The September post opened it to “all accounts” in the U.S. (18+); a footnote says it is “available to Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra, and consumer accounts”. The same post lists Gemini among the connected apps with the word “now”.

TechCrunch reports Sensor Tower estimates of nearly 55,000 U.S. downloads since June, with downloads down 84% month over month to about 5,500 in October. In the first 30 days after the U.S. opening, Sensor Tower estimates 29,000 downloads, against 7.4 million for Meta’s Muse, 2.8 million for ChatGPT and 155,000 for Claude in their own first 30 days; TechCrunch notes Dreambeans makes stories rather than answering broad queries.

The Structural Read

As we read Google’s three posts, each step widened who can use the app: Ultra subscribers in June, all U.S. accounts in September, then India in November. The material stayed the user’s own Google apps, which grew from five to six when Gemini was added.

As we read the reason Google gave, according to TechCrunch, the market was chosen on overlap: India stood out for its high overlap of users across Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos. The more of those apps one person uses, the more material the app has to work with.

As we read the Sensor Tower estimates TechCrunch reports, the U.S. opening drew 29,000 downloads in 30 days against 7.4 million for Meta’s Muse, and October downloads fell to about 5,500. Google’s India post gives no user figures.

Three Implications

FOR GOOGLE Google said India stood out for its high overlap of users across Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos, according to TechCrunch; the app needs at least one connected app to work, its June post says.

FOR RIVAL AI APPS In TechCrunch’s Sensor Tower figures, general-purpose assistants drew far more first-month downloads: 2.8 million for ChatGPT and 155,000 for Claude, against 29,000 for Dreambeans.

FOR USERS IN INDIA Stories come in one language at a time, TechCrunch reports, and cannot currently mix languages, Google’s Gozde Oznur said, according to TechCrunch; users choose and can disconnect the apps it reads, she said.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.

The framework reads: “The transformer is a commodity now; what changes between paradigms is where intelligence accumulates and who can capture it”.

As we read it, Dreambeans accumulates its material in a place rivals cannot copy, a user’s own Gmail, Photos, Calendar, Search and YouTube history, which is why the launch market was chosen on overlap across Google apps. The framework was published in July 2026 and does not discuss Dreambeans.

What Is Not Established

Google’s three posts give no user or download figures; the download numbers are Sensor Tower estimates as reported by TechCrunch. Google’s Labs help page, as we read it on 3 November, still described the app as available in the U.S.

The reasons for choosing India and the details on languages, privacy controls and account types come from Oznur’s press briefing as reported by TechCrunch; we did not attend it and did not contact Google.

The Bottom Line

Google has opened Dreambeans to people in India aged 18 and over in 14 languages, 54 days after opening it to all U.S. accounts, by our count. The app builds its stories from up to six of a user’s own Google apps, and Google said India stood out for its high overlap of users across Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos, according to TechCrunch.
