SpaceX CDS Record Came 3.5 Hours Before the $1.45T AI Close

SpaceX’s 5-year credit default swaps reached a record 286.56 basis points at 17:33 UTC on 5 November, according to Markit data cited on X, about 3.5 hours before the US stock market closed. At the 21:00 UTC close, the 12 AI stocks we track were a combined $1,447.4 billion lower than on Wednesday, by our arithmetic.

Across the 19.5 hours from the first SpaceX default-swap post at 15:58 UTC on Thursday to our read of SoftBank’s bond prices at 11:29 UTC on Friday, five credit and market prints landed around that close. This piece lays them out in order. It does not say any one caused another.

Business Pill · Financial Conditions

A short explainer on financial conditions. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss these companies or this week.

The key insight: As we read the clock, SpaceX’s 5-year default swaps hit a record 286.56 at 17:33 UTC, about 3.5 hours before 12 AI stocks closed $1,447.4 billion lower at 21:00 UTC, by our arithmetic.

Before the Close

Wall St Engine posted at 15:58 UTC that the cost to insure SpaceX debt against default had hit a record high, about 5.0 hours before the close, by our arithmetic. At 17:33 UTC Walter Bloomberg posted that SpaceX’s 5-year credit default swaps widened 24.5 basis points to 286.56, citing Markit data; that is about 9.3% in a day, by our arithmetic in our earlier piece.

The stock losses built through the session. On the same 12 stocks and share counts we counted about $930.1 billion lost at 10:04 a.m. ET (15:04 UTC) and $1,087.0 billion at 11:44 a.m. ET (16:44 UTC), before the $1,447.4 billion total at the close. Nvidia closed at $181.60, down 9.26%.

Also on Thursday, at times not given in the reports we read, Bloomberg reported that about $500 million of data center loans were up for auction, a holder later reported to be ING, with bids due November 19. CNBC reported on Friday, 6 November, that CoreWeave’s five-year default swaps “spiked above 1,289 basis points on Thursday”, and Bloomberg reported that the Bank of England had queried market participants about data center projects financed without a tenant in place.

After the Close

At 23:29 UTC, about 2.5 hours after the close, our read of FINRA’s TRACE data showed CoreWeave’s 9.625% notes due July 2032 last trading at 76.42 cents on the dollar, a yield of 16.09%, down from 78.50 and 15.42% at our 4 November read.

At 9:03 a.m. Korea time on Friday, 00:03 UTC and about 3 hours after the US close, the Korea Exchange halted trading in KOSPI-listed shares for 20 minutes after the index fell more than 8%, Yonhap reported. At the halt the KOSPI was down 8.55% at 4,923.47; it closed down 6.02% at 5,059.69.

Bloomberg reported on Friday that SoftBank Group’s dollar bond due in 2032 fell 0.9 cents, its biggest drop in 10 weeks, and that its shares fell as much as 16%. Our read of 14 SoftBank dollar note lines on TRACE was at 11:29 UTC on Friday, about 14.5 hours after the US close.

The Sequence in Hours

Measured from the 21:00 UTC close, by our arithmetic: the first SpaceX record post came about 5.0 hours before, the 286.56 print about 3.5 hours before, the CoreWeave note print about 2.5 hours after, the KOSPI halt about 3 hours after and our SoftBank read about 14.5 hours after. Two of the five prints came before the close, not after it.

Our neocloud piece of 6 November adds that CoreWeave’s 9.75% notes due October 2031 traded at a 16.33% yield on Friday, and that Bloomberg reported the ECB is considering a review of bank lending tied to data centers.

This week’s issue of The Business Engineer, This Week In The AI Supercycle, reads the week as capital, power and geopolitics converging; this piece sets out the hours around one day of it.

Connecting the Coverage

Each print has its own piece: the SpaceX default-swap record, the $1.45 trillion close, the loan sale and CoreWeave notes, the KOSPI halt and SoftBank’s bond.

The Structural Read

As we read the order, two of the five prints came before the US close: the 15:58 UTC post on a record SpaceX default-swap cost and the 17:33 UTC print of 286.56.

As we read the after-hours prints, the CoreWeave note print at 23:29 UTC and the KOSPI halt at 00:03 UTC came within about 3 hours of the close, and our SoftBank read about 14.5 hours after it, by our arithmetic.

As we read the reports, a loan auction and a Bank of England query were reported on Thursday without a time of day, and CNBC published its account of CoreWeave swaps spiking on Thursday a day later, so we leave all three off the clock.

Three Implications

FOR EQUITY HOLDERS The 12-stock basket closed $1,447.4 billion lower on 5 November, and Nvidia fell 9.26%, by our arithmetic on Nasdaq official closes.

FOR CREDIT HOLDERS SpaceX swaps, CoreWeave notes and SoftBank bonds all printed weaker within the same 19.5 hours, as reported in our linked pieces.

FOR LENDERS Bloomberg reported a $500 million data center loan auction and a Bank of England query on Thursday.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.

The analysis says: “It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing — and the financial architecture is starting to invert.”

As we read it, the prints in this timeline sit on the financing side of that map: default swaps, notes, a loan sale and a bond. The analysis does not discuss these moves.

What Is Not Established

This is a timeline, not an explanation. We do not say the stock losses caused any credit move, or the reverse; two of the credit prints came before the close. The SpaceX swap levels come from X posts citing Markit data, not from Markit directly. Some times are post or report times, and the 23:29 and 11:29 UTC times are when we read TRACE, not trade times. Several Thursday reports gave no time of day, so we do not place them on the clock.
