India has become ChatGPT’s largest market globally in terms of weekly active users, with its local user base doubling since January, OpenAI India managing director Prabhjeet Singh told The Economic Times on 3 November. In February, Sam Altman had put India at 100 million weekly users and called it ChatGPT’s second-largest user base after the United States.
At that point India was about 11% of ChatGPT’s 900 million weekly users, by our arithmetic. Singh did not give a new user count in the interviews we read, so India’s current share cannot be calculated from them.
Business Pill · Concentration
A Business Engineer explainer of how a few big pieces can make up most of a total. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss OpenAI, India or ChatGPT’s user numbers.
Update, 3 Nov: two OpenAI readings of 1.2 billion. The 1.2 billion September point in our chart, and the 33% rise from February we calculate from it, come from OpenAI’s DevDay recap of 29 September, which described “our collective 1.2B weekly users” and did not say what “collective” covered. In an interview Big Technology published on 3 November, given at an OpenAI-hosted dinner in New York on Monday night (2 November), ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry said “ChatGPT has gone from one billion to 1.2 in just the last two months”; Big Technology wrote that ChatGPT went from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly active users in 60 days. We quote both and do not judge between them. Fry’s figures are in ChatGPT Searches Near 1/5 of Google’s; Ads Top $1B Run Rate.
The key insight: As we read it, the new element is the rank, not a number: OpenAI’s India head says India now has more weekly ChatGPT users than any other country, including the United States, but gave no count.
What OpenAI’s India Head Said
Singh, who joined OpenAI in August, gave the figures in what The Economic Times called his first media interview since joining. “In less than a year, it’s doubling. It just gives you a sense of (how) people are beginning to find relevance and deep use cases,” he told the paper.
He told The Times of India that India is already ChatGPT’s largest consumer user market globally. The paper reported that users who go straight to ChatGPT’s dictation button rather than type are shaping OpenAI’s focus on voice, Hindi and other Indian languages.
“Most of India actually doesn’t use English as a primary. So real big focus is on Hindi and vernacular,” Singh told The Times of India. He also said OpenAI was working so that smartphones with limited memory could deliver the full model experience.

From No. 2 to No. 1 in Nine Months
On 15 February, TechCrunch reported that Altman wrote in The Times of India that India had 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users and was its second-largest user base after the United States. Altman also said India has the largest number of student users of ChatGPT globally.
Twelve days later OpenAI said ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users, up from the 800 million it reported in October 2025. In its DevDay 2026 recap on 29 September, OpenAI described its “collective 1.2B weekly users”, a figure we covered in ChatGPT’s 1.2B Weekly Users, and Where DevDay Landed.
From 900 million in February to 1.2 billion in September is a rise of about 33%, by our arithmetic. Over a comparable stretch of the year, Singh said India’s base doubled, which, as we read it, means India grew faster than ChatGPT as a whole. The two periods are not identical, and the reports we read give no country breakdown that would allow an exact comparison.
What Comes With the User Base
The Economic Times reported that OpenAI is expected to make announcements concerning UPI and payments over the coming weeks. On enterprises, Singh said the company was “seeing a real shift from early days of pilots and demos” to “now scaled adoption and production-scale deployment”.
The Times of India reported that ChatGPT Go was introduced with affordability in mind; TechCrunch reported in February that the sub-$5 tier was later made free for a year for Indian users. Singh also cited traders creating customised festive messages for customers and single-person shops exploring help with marketing and inventory management.
TechCrunch noted in February that Google has similarly targeted the Indian market. This week we reported that Google Takes Dreambeans to India, Its First Market Beyond US.

The Structural Read
As we read the reports, the ranking moved in about nine months: Altman called India the second-largest user base after the United States in February, and Singh now calls it the largest.
As we read the figures, India was about 11% of ChatGPT’s 900 million weekly users in February, by our arithmetic; ChatGPT’s global base then rose about 33% to 1.2 billion by September, while Singh says India’s base doubled since January.
As we read Singh’s interviews, OpenAI ties the growth to voice, Hindi and other Indian languages, and to use beyond programmers and office workers, such as traders and single-person shops.

Three Implications
FOR OPENAI The Economic Times reported that OpenAI is expected to make announcements concerning UPI and payments over the coming weeks.
FOR INDIAN ENTERPRISES Singh said OpenAI is seeing a shift from pilots and demos to scaled adoption and production-scale deployment.
FOR RIVALS TechCrunch noted in February that Google has similarly targeted the Indian market; the reports we read give no comparison of ChatGPT’s Indian user base with any rival’s.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Product Overhang Doctrine.
The framework opens: “In any product cycle, there are two curves to follow. The first is what your underlying technology can do. The second is what your users can actually do with it.”
As we read it, Singh’s account is about the second curve: he links India’s growth to people finding “deep use cases” and to voice and Hindi, not to a new model. The framework does not discuss India or ChatGPT’s user rankings.
What Is Not Established
In the reports we read, Singh did not give India’s current weekly user count, the United States figure, or the exact January base from which India’s users doubled. The Economic Times notes that market estimates had earlier put the India user base at 100 million.
Being the largest market by weekly users does not establish India as the largest by revenue; none of the reports we read gives Indian subscriber or revenue figures. The 11% and 33% figures are our arithmetic. We did not contact OpenAI.
The Bottom Line
According to OpenAI’s India managing director, India has moved from ChatGPT’s second-largest market in February to its largest by weekly active users, with its user base doubling since January. In February it was about 11% of ChatGPT’s weekly users, by our arithmetic; the reports we read give no new count.
