Apple Siri Chief Rockwell Weighs an Exit 20 Months In

Mike Rockwell, who created Apple’s Vision Pro headset and led the development of Siri AI, “continues to seriously consider stepping down”, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in the Power On newsletter on November 8. Gurman wrote that this “could mean leaving his role as vice president of Siri engineering — or Apple altogether — next year”.

Bloomberg reported on March 20, 2025 that Rockwell had been named head of Siri. By our arithmetic, the November 8 report comes about 20 months (598 days) after that appointment, and a couple of months after the rebuilt Siri reached users with iOS 27, as the newsletter describes it.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on AI agents. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Apple’s Siri leadership.

The key insight: Mike Rockwell, who led the development of Siri AI, continues to seriously consider stepping down from Siri engineering or leaving Apple next year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on November 8. If that happens, additional responsibility would likely fall to Amar Subramanya and Sebastien Marineau, according to the newsletter. By our arithmetic, the report comes about 20 months (598 days) after Bloomberg reported Rockwell’s appointment as Siri head.

What Gurman Reported

Gurman called a departure “a major blow, given his role in bringing the new Siri to market after an embarrassing two-year delay”. The newsletter presents Rockwell’s deliberations as part of wider management concerns at Apple: “The management concerns go beyond Federighi”, it says.

The report does not say Rockwell has decided anything. It describes someone who is still weighing a move, with any change framed for next year.

Key dates in Apple’s Siri rebuild as reported by Bloomberg, from the Siri AI features shown for iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 to Gurman’s 8 November 2026 report that Mike Rockwell continues to seriously consider stepping down. The 598-day gap from Bloomberg’s 20 March 2025 report of Rockwell’s appointment is our arithmetic; the iOS 27 marker is approximate.

What Was Posted on X

Mark Gurman posted on 8 November that Mike Rockwell continues to seriously consider leaving the Siri chief role, or Apple altogether, next year, and called a departure a major blow as Apple looks to accelerate. The post summarises the Power On newsletter this piece is based on.

Who Would Take On More

If Rockwell leaves the company or moves to another job inside Apple, “additional responsibility would likely fall to two people”, according to Gurman: Amar Subramanya, “a Google veteran who was hired last year to shore up Apple’s AI efforts”, and Sebastien Marineau, “a Federighi deputy”.

Gurman wrote that Marineau “is seen by some internally as a possible candidate to eventually succeed Federighi as software chief” and as someone “more all-in on the AI revolution”. Marineau currently leads the teams that integrate AI into the iOS operating system, the newsletter says.

The Succession Question Above Rockwell

The newsletter says “any actual succession process remains a distant prospect”. Gurman reported that Federighi “has done little to prioritize succession planning or establish a clear path for a successor”, and that Federighi “has given no indication” of being among the senior leaders considering an exit in the coming years.

What the Siri Team Delivered

According to the newsletter, “Federighi, Rockwell and Apple’s Siri team completely rebuilt the underlying engine for the voice assistant from scratch”, creating new AI models based on technology Apple licenses from Google. Features first shown for iOS 18 at Apple’s 2024 developer conference were delayed until the iOS 27 launch, Gurman wrote.

The newsletter adds that advanced in-app actions, part of the 2024 announcements, resurfaced in the first iOS 27.3 beta this past week, and calls that capability “the most powerful component of the new Siri strategy”.

Connecting the Coverage

The same Power On column is the source of our earlier piece on Ternus pressing Federighi on AI as Apple’s R&D rose 32%, which reported the CEO’s closed-door push and Apple’s FY2026 research spending of $45.765 billion. What is new here is the detail on who would absorb Siri responsibilities and the succession picture Gurman describes.

In June we covered Apple’s internal AI crisis meeting over Siri and how AI became the bottleneck in Apple’s product schedule. We also covered Ternus on memory prices.

The Structural Read

As we read the newsletter, the reported deliberations land a couple of months after the rebuilt Siri reached users with iOS 27, the product Rockwell’s team was brought in to deliver.

As we read Gurman’s account, the two people named as likely successors come from different directions: a Google veteran hired to shore up Apple’s AI efforts and a Federighi deputy who already leads AI integration in iOS.

As we read the column, the absence of succession planning it describes at the software-chief level is part of the context for any change at the Siri level.

Three Implications

FOR APPLE’S AI ROADMAP Gurman reports that responsibility would likely shift to Amar Subramanya and Sebastien Marineau if Rockwell leaves or moves.

FOR THE SIRI TIMELINE The newsletter says advanced in-app actions resurfaced in the first iOS 27.3 beta and calls them the most powerful component of the new Siri strategy.

FOR THE NUMBERS TO WATCH By our arithmetic, Rockwell’s reported deliberations come 598 days after Bloomberg reported the appointment; the column frames any move for next year.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Product Overhang Doctrine.

The essay says “Most product organizations are built to ship for the curve they can see today.”

As we read it, Gurman’s account of a Siri leadership that delivered a long-promised assistant while rivals moved on to agents describes that gap between capability and product. The essay does not discuss Apple’s management.

What Is Not Established

Rockwell has not announced any decision, and the column frames a possible move as something for next year. The newsletter we read includes no comment from Apple or from Rockwell. The roles Subramanya and Marineau would take are described as likely, not decided.

The Bottom Line

Mike Rockwell, who led the Siri AI rebuild, continues to seriously consider stepping down from Siri engineering or leaving Apple next year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on November 8, about 20 months after Bloomberg reported the appointment, by our arithmetic. Amar Subramanya and Sebastien Marineau would likely take on more, the newsletter says.

A note on sourcing. Rockwell’s deliberations, the roles of Amar Subramanya and Sebastien Marineau, the succession remarks and the Siri rebuild details are from Mark Gurman’s Bloomberg Power On newsletter of 8 November 2026; the March 2025 appointment date is from Bloomberg’s report of that date. The 598-day gap is our arithmetic.
