What Uber’s headcount tells you
Uber’s headcount rose fast after the pandemic, from 22,800 at the end of 2020 to 32,800 at the end of 2022, then fell to 30,400 in 2023 after a round of cost cuts. Since then it has grown again, but far more slowly than the business.
That gap is the point. Revenue grew from $11.1 billion in 2020 to $52.0 billion in 2025, while headcount grew about 1.5 times. The people who do the physical work, millions of drivers and couriers, sit outside the payroll, so each employee supports more revenue every year: about $1.53 million in 2025 (see Uber revenue per employee).
Uber reports operations in over 70 countries and more than 15,000 cities. Most employees work in engineering, product, operations and sales, building the platform rather than running the trips.
