How Uber Eats became profitable
For years Delivery lost money as Uber subsidised growth. Today it is Uber’s second profit engine: $1,055 million of segment operating income in Q2 2026, against $2,215 million for Mobility. Its margin on bookings is about 3.8%, thinner than rides, because delivery has three sides to pay for: the restaurant, the courier and the customer.
Two things changed the economics. Scale: Delivery bookings reached $27.5 billion in the quarter, almost as large as rides at $29.0 billion, which spreads fixed costs. And advertising: restaurants and brands pay to appear higher in the app, revenue that costs little to deliver.
Delivery is also growing faster than rides: bookings +26% and revenue +28% in Q2 2026, against +22% and +1% for Mobility (rides revenue was held back by business model changes). See Uber Eats revenue and Uber Eats take rate.
Earlier figures and background
If we look at EBITDA, Uber Eats was a profitable segment, generating $1.5 billion in EBITDA in 2023. For the first time since its inception, Uber Eats‘ EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) – which measures a company’s operational efficiency – turned positive for $551 million in 2022, compared to negative $348 million in 2021; negative $870 million in negative EBIDTA in 2020; and over $1.3 billion negative EBIDTA in 2019.
How AI Is Changing This
AI is significantly transforming Uber Eats’ path to profitability through sophisticated demand forecasting and dynamic pricing algorithms. The platform’s machine learning models analyze vast amounts of real-time data including weather patterns, local events, historical ordering trends, and restaurant capacity to predict demand spikes and optimize delivery routes. For example, during a sudden rainstorm in New York City, Uber Eats’ AI can instantly identify increased demand for food delivery in specific neighborhoods, automatically adjust delivery fees and surge pricing, and strategically reposition drivers to minimize wait times. This predictive capability allows the company to maximize revenue during peak periods while reducing operational costs during slower times. By optimizing driver utilization rates and reducing average delivery times from 35 minutes to under 30 minutes in many markets, these AI improvements directly impact the bottom line by increasing order volume and improving customer satisfaction.
