At 21:06 UTC on 2 November, Wall St Engine (@wallstengine) posted its highlights card for Upwork’s third quarter: revenue, adjusted earnings per share and adjusted EBITDA with consensus estimates, GSV down 10.1%, 717,000 active clients, the full-year and fourth-quarter outlook, the MCP server’s nearly 50 million AI-agent requests, AI-skills GSV of nearly $450 million annualized, and the WorkMotion acquisition.
Work by freelancers with AI skills reached an estimated annualized run rate of nearly $450 million of gross services volume (GSV) on Upwork in the third quarter, up 55% from a year earlier, the company reported on 2 November. Total GSV fell 10.1% to $914.1 million.
Annualized, $450 million is about $112.5 million a quarter, roughly 12% of the quarter’s GSV, by our arithmetic. Strip that out and all other work on the marketplace fell from about $944 million to about $802 million, a drop of about 15%, by our arithmetic.
Upwork also says AI agents have made nearly 50 million requests through its new MCP server, which it says opens the marketplace to AI agents as a new class of client.
Business Pill · MCP
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on MCP, the shared plug that connects AI models to tools. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Upwork.
The key insight: As we read the release, Upwork is two marketplaces moving in opposite directions: AI-skills work growing at 55% inside a total that shrank 10.1%, which leaves the rest of the work down about 15%, by our arithmetic.
What Upwork Reported
For the quarter to 30 September, revenue was $185.6 million, against $201.7 million a year earlier, by our arithmetic from the segment lines: marketplace revenue fell 9% to $159.3 million and enterprise revenue 3% to $26.3 million. Active clients were 717,000, and GSV per active client rose 8% to $5,418.
Profit held up. GAAP net income rose 8% to $31.8 million, or $0.25 a diluted share, and adjusted EBITDA rose 7% to $63.8 million, a margin of 34% against 30% a year earlier. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.40, against $0.36. Free cash flow was $53.9 million, down from $69.4 million.
Wall St Engine’s highlights card put the consensus estimates at $180 million for revenue and $0.31 for adjusted earnings per share.

Where the AI Work Is
Upwork gives two AI figures for the marketplace. GSV from freelancers with AI skills reached an estimated annualized run rate of nearly $450 million and grew 55% from a year earlier.
At 55% growth, the year-earlier quarter was about $72.6 million, so AI-skills work added about $40 million of quarterly GSV while total GSV fell by $102.6 million, by our arithmetic. Because Upwork rounds the run rate (“nearly”), these figures are approximate.
The release does not define how a freelancer is classed as having AI skills, or whether the same work would previously have been counted elsewhere.
Agents as Clients
The Upwork Model Context Protocol (MCP) server launched in August. Weekly active users have increased 20x since launch, and AI agents have made nearly 50 million requests, “driving more than $3 million in estimated annualized Connects revenue,” the release says. Connects are the credits freelancers buy to bid for jobs.
“The launch of Upwork’s MCP server is opening our marketplace to AI agents as a new class of client,” said Hayden Brown, the chief executive. Upwork also launched a public beta of Upwork Now, which connects clients with freelancers who are online and ready to start, and which is available through the MCP server.
Against $185.6 million of quarterly revenue, $3 million a year of Connects revenue is small: about 0.4% of an annualized quarter, by our arithmetic.
Outlook and Management
For the fourth quarter, Upwork guides revenue of $169 million to $177 million and adjusted EBITDA of $51 million to $55 million. For 2026 it expects revenue of $742 million to $750 million. Wall St Engine’s card put the fourth-quarter revenue estimate at $175 million.
Erica Gessert will step down as chief financial officer on 1 January 2027, and Peter Sanborn, the chief business officer, will succeed her. Upwork’s Lifted unit is acquiring WorkMotion, a Berlin-based employer of record.

The Structural Read
As we read the profit lines, Upwork is managing the shrinking volume for margin: operating expenses fell 15% and adjusted EBITDA rose 7% while revenue fell.
As we read the MCP figures, agents are a new channel rather than yet a revenue line: nearly 50 million requests and more than $3 million of estimated annualized Connects revenue, about 0.4% of an annualized quarter, by our arithmetic.
As we read the AI-skills number, it is a run rate of a category Upwork defines itself, so it measures where buyers are spending, not how much of the decline in other work AI has caused.

Three Implications
FOR UPWORK’S VOLUME AI-skills work, at roughly 12% of GSV by our arithmetic, is growing, but not by enough to offset the fall in the rest.
FOR AGENT CHANNELS Upwork reports nearly 50 million agent requests since August, a measure of how AI agents can act as buyers on a labour marketplace.
FOR SHAREHOLDERS Margins widened: adjusted EBITDA margin of 34% against 30% a year earlier, with a CFO change on 1 January 2027.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework From SaaS to AGaaS.
The framework puts its thesis in one sentence: “SaaS is charged for access to tools. AGaaS charges for the execution of outcomes.”
As we read it, a labour marketplace already sells outcomes, and Upwork is now letting AI agents buy them through its MCP server. The framework discusses software pricing and does not discuss Upwork or freelance marketplaces.
What Is Not Established
Upwork does not give a quarterly AI-skills GSV figure, so the 12% share and the 15% fall in other work are our arithmetic from a rounded, annualized number. The release does not say how much of the decline in other work reflects fewer clients, smaller projects or work reclassified as AI.

The Bottom Line
On Upwork’s own figures, the AI-skills slice of its marketplace grew 55% to a run rate of nearly $450 million while total GSV fell 10.1%, which implies the rest of the work fell by about 15%, by our arithmetic. Profit and margins rose in the same quarter.

A note on sourcing. This piece is based on Upwork’s third-quarter results release (Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1) filed with the SEC on 2 November 2026, and its 10-Q. The quarterly AI-skills GSV (about $450 million divided by four, and that divided by 1.55 for a year earlier), the other GSV ($914.1 million and $1,016.7 million minus those), the 12% share, the 15% fall, the year-earlier revenue (segment sum) and the 0.4% are our arithmetic and approximate because Upwork rounds the run rate. Consensus estimates are as cited by Wall St Engine. We did not contact Upwork.
