Anthropic carried $450 million of liabilities for its $1.5 billion settlement with book authors at 30 September 2026, down from $1.2 billion at 30 June, according to the amended Form S-1 it filed with the SEC on Monday, 2 November, and its first S-1 of 26 October. The $750 million fall in the quarter is our arithmetic.
When Anthropic recorded the $1.5 billion charge in the third quarter of 2025, it equalled 109% of that quarter’s revenue of $1,382 million, the filing’s percent-of-revenue table shows. The remaining $450 million is about 2.7% of third-quarter 2026 revenue of $16,956 million, by our arithmetic.
The key insight: Anthropic’s amended S-1 puts the liability for its $1.5 billion Bartz settlement at $450 million on 30 September 2026, down from $1.2 billion three months earlier, a $750 million fall by our arithmetic.
What the Filing Says About Bartz
Note 13 of the S-1/A says the company “reached a settlement in the amount of $1.5 billion and the interest earned thereon, which was approved by the district court in July 2026”.
It says the company “paid $300 million during the year ended December 31, 2025” and recorded liabilities of $750 million in current liabilities and $450 million in non-current liabilities at 31 December 2025, “and $450 million in accounts payable, accrued expenses, and other current liabilities as of September 30, 2026”.
The first S-1, filed on 26 October, put the current liability at “$1.2 billion in accounts payable, accrued expenses, and other current liabilities as of June 30, 2026”.

A Charge Larger Than a Quarter’s Revenue
The filing says the $1.5 billion “reflects the charge related to the legal settlement of the Bartz litigation reached and accrued during the third quarter of 2025”. Its tables put the charge at 109% of third-quarter 2025 revenue, 59% of revenue for the first nine months of 2025 and 33% of full-year 2025 revenue of $4,585 million.
The case, Bartz, et al. v. Anthropic, was a class action by authors alleging copyright infringement related to the use of literary works in training Anthropic’s models.

The Other Copyright Cases
The S-1/A lists suits by music publishers, including Concord Music Group, BMG, Round Hill and Sony Music Publishing, over song lyrics, and a suit by Reddit. In the first Concord case, it says, “Both parties filed motions for summary judgment and the court held a hearing on October 21, 2026”.
It also says the company “is also subject to four copyright actions in Canada”, including two putative class actions on behalf of Canadian authors filed in May and July 2025.
Connecting the Coverage
We covered the settlement’s distribution fight between authors and publishers in September. On Monday’s filing we also reported Anthropic’s $17 billion quarter and interest income of 2.2 times its operating loss.
The Structural Read
As we read the two filings, the settlement has moved from a charge that equalled 109% of a quarter’s revenue in 2025 to a remaining balance of about 2.7% of the latest quarter’s revenue, by our arithmetic.
As we read the legal section, Bartz is settled and approved, while the music-publisher, Reddit and Canadian cases the filing lists remain pending.

Three Implications
FOR AUTHORS IN THE CLASS The S-1/A says the court approved the settlement in July 2026 and records $450 million of liabilities at 30 September 2026.
FOR IPO INVESTORS The filing lists suits by Concord, BMG, Round Hill, Sony Music Publishing and Reddit, and four copyright actions in Canada.
FOR OTHER AI DEVELOPERS The filing says the $1.5 billion charge was recorded in the third quarter of 2025, when it equalled 109% of that quarter’s revenue.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Inside Anthropic’s Permission Layer.
The framework says: “It is helping define the rules, permissions, and boundaries around frontier intelligence.”
As we read it, the Bartz settlement is one of the costs attached to those boundaries: the filing records what was agreed with authors and what is still owed. The framework is the owner’s argument and does not discuss this filing.

What Is Not Established
The filing does not say how much was paid in the third quarter, when the remaining $450 million is due, or whether the recorded liability includes interest earned on the settlement amount. The $750 million fall and the 2.7% figure are our arithmetic; the 109%, 59% and 33% figures are from the filing’s tables. The filing does not estimate outcomes in the pending music-publisher, Reddit or Canadian cases.
The Bottom Line
Anthropic’s amended S-1 shows the liability for its $1.5 billion Bartz settlement at $450 million on 30 September 2026, down from $1.2 billion three months earlier, after the court approved the settlement in July. The charge equalled 109% of Anthropic’s revenue in the quarter it was recorded; the remaining balance is about 2.7% of its latest quarterly revenue.

A note on sourcing. Figures and quotations are from Anthropic’s Form S-1/A filed with the SEC on 2 November 2026 and its first Form S-1 of 26 October 2026 (Note 13 and the percent-of-revenue tables). The $750 million fall and the 2.7% figure are our arithmetic.
