Musk’s Reported $450M Midterm Spend: FEC Filings Show $288M

The Information wrote in an X post at 21:33 UTC on 4 November: “Elon Musk reportedly spent nearly $450 million backing Republicans in the midterms, and Tuesday’s results suggest the bet backfired.” The post links its article on the election’s effect on AI, crypto and tech, which is behind a paywall; we read the post, not the article.

Federal Election Commission filings we checked show about $287.7 million in contributions from Musk, or his revocable trust, to federal committees this cycle, by our arithmetic. That is about 64% of the reported figure. America PAC, the super PAC he funds, received about $216.0 million of it through 14 October, about 75%.

Business Pill · Concentration

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on concentration, when a few big pieces make up most of a total. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Musk, any PAC or the elections.

The key insight: As we read it, FEC filings we checked show about $287.7 million from Musk to federal committees this cycle, about 64% of the nearly $450 million The Information reported, with America PAC receiving about three-quarters, by our arithmetic; the post does not say how the larger figure was built.

What the FEC Filings Show

America PAC’s raw filings list $215,957,889.39 in receipts from Musk between 1 January 2025 and 14 October 2026, across six reports. The largest were its third-quarter report, $88.9 million, and its pre-general report for 1-14 October, $76.8 million, filed on 22 October. The FEC’s own summary for the committee shows $215,977,673.63 in total receipts and $51,436,851.03 in independent expenditures for the same period.

FEC processed data, read on 4 November, list a further $71.8 million from Musk to other committees with dates from March 2025 to September 2026. These include $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund in three gifts, the last $20 million on 4 September 2026, and $10 million each to SLF PAC, Fight for Kentucky and Lone Star Liberty PAC. The Lone Star Liberty gift, on 21 August 2026, came from the Elon Musk Revocable Trust.

Smaller amounts went to V-PAC: Victors, Not Victims ($5 million), MAGA Inc. ($5 million) and Aurora Action Network ($1.5 million), plus $259,100 net to candidate committees and WinRED in March and April 2025.

What Was Posted on X

The Information posted this at 21:33 UTC on 4 November 2026: “Elon Musk reportedly spent nearly $450 million backing Republicans in the midterms, and Tuesday’s results suggest the bet backfired.” It links the outlet’s article on the midterm results. The post says Musk “reportedly” spent that sum and does not name its source; “backfired” is The Information’s reading. The FEC figures in this piece are from the filings.

Why the Totals Differ

By our arithmetic, the FEC records we checked leave about $162 million of the reported nearly $450 million unaccounted for. The X post does not say how the figure was built, and we did not read the article. The FEC data cover contributions to federal committees; they do not show spending that is not reported to the FEC.

Timing is another gap. The other committees’ reports for 1-14 October may not yet be in the FEC’s processed data, and post-general reports covering the final weeks are due on 3 December.

When the Money Arrived

Of America PAC’s $216.0 million from Musk, about $165.6 million, 77%, came in the third quarter and the first two weeks of October, by our arithmetic. In Michigan, America PAC spent $9.18 million on independent expenditures in the Senate general election, per FEC 24- and 48-hour reports, and AP called that race for Abdul El-Sayed, as we reported.

Bloomberg, in a report we cited earlier, wrote that “Elon Musk, the crypto industry and AI backers together poured hundreds of millions of dollars into key midterm races from Texas to Ohio but came up short”.

The AI and Crypto PACs

By our count of FEC filings, 13 AI and crypto super PACs spent $61.7 million of their general-election money on the losing side of races AP had called by 15:25 UTC on 4 November, as we reported. That figure covers those 13 committees and only general-election races AP had called by that time, so we have not combined it with or compared it to Musk’s totals.

The Structural Read

As we read the filings, Musk’s contributions were concentrated in one committee: America PAC received about $216.0 million, about 7.2 times the next-largest recipient, the Congressional Leadership Fund at $30 million, by our arithmetic.

As we read the timing, about 77% of America PAC’s receipts from Musk this cycle are dated from July to mid-October 2026, by our arithmetic, and post-general reports covering the final weeks are due on 3 December.

Three Implications

FOR READERS OF THE TOTALS The reported nearly $450 million and the about $287.7 million in FEC filings we checked are different measures until the source of the larger figure is known; we have not combined them.

FOR TRACKING AI AND TECH MONEY The 13 AI and crypto super PACs we track put $61.7 million of general-election money on the losing side of races AP had called by 15:25 UTC on 4 November, by our count; we have not combined that figure with Musk’s totals.

FOR THE NEXT FILINGS Post-general reports, due on 3 December, cover the final weeks of spending, and other committees’ 1-14 October reports may not yet be in the FEC’s processed data.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.

The framework puts it this way: “The supercycle has a ceiling now, and the ceiling is political.”

As we read it, election money from tech principals is one place where that political side is visible in filings. The FEC filings show which committees received Musk’s contributions and when; they do not show outcomes. The framework does not discuss Musk, America PAC or these elections.

What Is Not Established

The source and method behind the nearly $450 million figure are not stated in The Information’s post, and its article was not read. “Backfired” is The Information’s word. Our FEC totals cover contributions under Musk’s name or his revocable trust; other committees’ October reports may not yet be processed, and final pre-election spending is reported on 3 December.
