Elon Musk contributed $474 million to political groups for the 2026 midterms, including $216 million to America PAC, according to an analysis by Teddy Schleifer in the New York Times published on 2 November. Schleifer wrote on X that it is “the most anyone has ever spent on an election in which they were not running.”
The America PAC portion can be checked against public filings. By our arithmetic from America PAC’s reports to the Federal Election Commission, Musk contributed $216.0 million to the committee in the 2025-26 cycle through 14 October, and $165.6 million of that came between 1 July and 14 October. At the same point in the 2024 cycle, his contributions to America PAC stood at $118.6 million, so this cycle’s figure is about 1.8 times as large.

The key insight: By our arithmetic from America PAC’s FEC reports, Elon Musk contributed $216.0 million to the committee in the 2025-26 cycle through 14 October, about 1.8 times the $118.6 million he had given it at the same point in 2024; the New York Times puts his total midterm contributions at $474 million.
What the FEC Filings Show
America PAC, committee ID C00879510, is listed on the FEC’s committee page as a Super PAC (Independent Expenditure-Only). We read its six reports for the 2025-26 cycle, from the mid-year 2025 report to the pre-general report covering 1 to 14 October 2026, and summed the itemised receipts in which the contributor is Elon Musk. Where a report was amended, we used the amended version.
The reports show $45.3 million from Musk in the first half of 2025, $2.9 million in the second half of 2025, $1.6 million in the first quarter of 2026 and $0.5 million in the second quarter. The October quarterly report shows $88.9 million from 1 July to 30 September, and the pre-general report shows $76.8 million from 1 to 14 October.
In both of the two most recent reports, Musk’s contributions equal America PAC’s total receipts. The pre-general report lists $42.7 million in total disbursements for 1 to 14 October and $46.5 million in cash on hand on 14 October. Contributions made after 14 October are not in these reports.

Against 2024
To compare like with like, we stopped the 2024 count at the 2024 pre-general report, which ran to 16 October 2024. America PAC’s October quarterly 2024 report shows $74.95 million from Musk and its pre-general 2024 report shows $43.6 million, for $118.6 million. The 2026 figure to 14 October, $216.0 million, is 1.8 times that, by our arithmetic.
The 2024 total kept growing after the pre-general reporting period. America PAC’s post-general and year-end 2024 reports show a further $131.2 million from Musk between 17 October and 31 December 2024, which brings his 2024-cycle contributions to the committee to $249.8 million by our sum.

Connecting the Coverage
On 1 November we reported that a New York Times list of the 20 biggest midterm donors, posted on X by Schleifer, put Musk first at $445.6 million. The analysis published on 2 November gives $474 million; both are Times figures, and the difference is $28.4 million by our arithmetic.
Earlier on 2 November, we reported that AI-focused super PACs have made $81.3 million in independent expenditures this cycle, by our arithmetic from FEC filings. That figure measures spending by several committees, while the $216.0 million here measures contributions into one committee, so we do not compare or combine the two.

The Structural Read
As we read the reports, the money arrived late in the cycle: $165.6 million of the $216.0 million came between 1 July and 14 October, and in both of those reports Musk’s contributions equal America PAC’s total receipts.
As we read the comparison, the cutoff matters: the 2024 count to the pre-general report is $118.6 million, but America PAC’s later 2024 reports add $131.2 million more, for $249.8 million across that cycle.

Three Implications
FOR THE FILINGS The pre-general report lists $46.5 million in cash on hand on 14 October and $42.7 million in disbursements for 1 to 14 October.
FOR THE TOTAL About $258 million of the Times’s $474 million, by our arithmetic, sits outside America PAC; we have not verified it against filings.
FOR THE TIMELINE Contributions made after 14 October are not in the reports read here.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.
The framework reads: “The supercycle has a ceiling now, and the ceiling is political.”
As we read it, campaign-finance filings are one place where that political layer shows up in dollars. The framework is the owner’s argument and does not discuss Musk, America PAC or the 2026 elections.

What Is Not Established
We have not verified the rest of the Times’s $474 million, about $258 million by our arithmetic, which the Times attributes to other political groups. We could not open the article itself, so this piece relies on its summary as shown on Techmeme and on Schleifer’s post on X for the Times’s figures and method. The claim that this is a record for a person not running for office is the Times’s.
FEC filings do not yet show contributions to America PAC after 14 October. We did not contact Musk or America PAC.
The Bottom Line
The New York Times puts Elon Musk’s midterm contributions at $474 million. America PAC’s own FEC reports show $216.0 million from Musk through 14 October by our arithmetic, $165.6 million of it since 1 July, and about 1.8 times what he had given the committee at the same point in 2024.
