Anthropic’s Q3 Interest Income Was 2.2x Its Operating Loss

Anthropic earned $1,248 million of interest income in the third quarter of 2026, about 2.2 times its $567 million operating loss for the quarter, according to the amended Form S-1 it filed with the SEC on Monday, 2 November. The 2.2 times is our arithmetic.

For the nine months to 30 September, the filing reports interest income of $2,359 million against an operating loss of $1,260 million, about 1.9 times, by our arithmetic. In the second quarter, interest income of $762 million had equalled about 78% of operating income of $974 million.

The key insight: Anthropic’s amended S-1 shows third-quarter interest income of $1,248 million, about 2.2 times the quarter’s $567 million operating loss, on $131.9 billion of cash and short-term investments at 30 September, by our arithmetic.

What the Filing Says the Cash Earns

The S-1/A says “Interest income increased sequentially in each of the quarters presented, from $51 million for the three months ended March 31, 2025 to $1.2 billion for the three months ended September 30, 2026, primarily driven by higher average cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments balances”.

It describes the source as “interest earned on our cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments, which primarily consist of debt securities, including U.S. Treasury and agency securities, corporate debt, and commercial paper”.

For the nine months, it reports interest income of $2,359 million against $239 million a year earlier, an increase it puts at 887%.

Business Pill · Form and Substance

A short Business Engineer explainer on form and substance. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Anthropic or its filing.

Seven Quarters, Two Lines

The quarterly table in the filing shows operating losses of $935 million, $1,200 million, $3,089 million and $2,836 million through 2025 and $1,667 million in the first quarter of 2026, then operating income of $974 million in the second quarter and an operating loss of $567 million in the third.

Over the same seven quarters, interest income rose from $51 million to $64 million, $124 million, $192 million, $349 million, $762 million and $1,248 million. The third quarter is the first in the table in which interest income is larger than the operating loss, by our reading of the table.

Interest income equalled about 7.4% of third-quarter revenue of $16,956 million, by our arithmetic, and rose about 64% from the second quarter.

The Size of the Pile

The filing says that as of 30 September 2026 Anthropic “had $146.6 billion of liquidity, comprised of $95.6 billion of cash and cash equivalents, $36.3 billion of short-term investments, and $14.8 billion of availability under our A&R Credit Facility”. Cash and short-term investments together come to $131.9 billion, our sum, against $131.7 billion at 30 June in the first S-1, as we reported last week.

Four quarters at the third-quarter rate would be about $5.0 billion a year, by our arithmetic, roughly 3.8% of the 30 September balance. That is a run-rate illustration on an end-of-period balance, not a figure from the filing.

Connecting the Coverage

This follow-up builds on Anthropic’s $17 billion quarter and $567 million operating loss and the $21.9 billion charge on its notes behind the $23.3 billion net loss. The same filing lists $69.8 billion of compute commitments due within 12 months, against which the $131.9 billion of cash and short-term investments sits.

The Structural Read

As we read the quarterly table, the line below operating income is now doing work the operating line is not: the third quarter is the first in the filing in which interest income is larger than the operating loss.

As we read the filing together with the first S-1, cash and short-term investments were roughly flat between 30 June and 30 September at about $132 billion, while quarterly interest income rose about 64%.

“Interest income increased sequentially in each of the quarters presented”

Three Implications

FOR IPO INVESTORS The filing reports interest income below operating income (loss); the third-quarter operating loss was $567 million and interest income $1,248 million.

FOR THE COMPUTE BILL The same filing lists $69.8 billion of compute commitments due within 12 months, against $131.9 billion of cash and short-term investments, our sum.

FOR THE RUN RATE Four quarters at the third-quarter rate would be about $5.0 billion of interest a year, by our arithmetic, an illustration rather than a figure from the filing.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.

The framework says: “It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing โ€” and the financial architecture is starting to invert.”

As we read it, Anthropic’s filing shows one side of that architecture: a cash pile whose quarterly interest income now exceeds the quarter’s operating loss. The framework is the owner’s argument and does not discuss this filing.

What Is Not Established

The filing does not give the average balance or yield behind the interest line, so the 3.8% figure uses the end-of-period balance and is only an approximation. The filing reports interest income below operating income (loss), not inside it, and does not say how it will invest the IPO proceeds. The 2.2-times, 1.9-times, 78%, 7.4%, 64%, $131.9 billion, $5.0 billion and 3.8% figures are our arithmetic.

The 2.2-times, 1.9-times, 78%, 7.4%, 64%, $131.9 billion, $5.0 billion and 3.8% figures are our arithmetic.
