Anthropic Earned $762M of Interest in Q2 on $131.7B of Cash

Anthropic held $131.7 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at 30 June 2026, according to the Form S-1 it filed with the SEC on 26 October 2026, our sum of $112.4 billion of cash and cash equivalents and $19.3 billion of short-term investments. Six months earlier the two lines totalled $20.3 billion.

The balance earned $762 million of interest in the second quarter of 2026, up from $64 million a year earlier, the S-1’s quarterly table shows. That equals about 78% of the quarter’s $974 million operating income, by our arithmetic, but the filing reports interest below operating income, not inside it.

Business Pill · FORM AND SUBSTANCE

A short Business Engineer explainer on form and substance. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Anthropic or its filing.

The key insight: As we read it, the new element is the size of the interest line: the cash raised in 2026 now earns, in a quarter, an amount close to the operating income the business produced in that quarter.

What the Filing Says the Cash Earns

The S-1 says “Interest income consists of interest earned on our cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments which primarily consist of debt securities, including U.S. Treasury and agency securities, corporate debt, and commercial paper”.

For the first half of 2026 it reports interest income of $1,111 million, against $115 million a year earlier. The increase “was primarily driven by an increase in investment income due to higher average cash and cash equivalents balances and new short-term investments balances in the first half of 2026”, the filing says.

Anthropic’s S-1: $131.7 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at 30 June 2026 (our sum), and quarterly interest income rising to $762 million in Q2 2026, against Q2 operating income of $974 million. The S-1 reports interest income below operating income.

Where the Interest Sits

In the S-1’s statements, interest income is the first line under operating income, followed by the change in fair value of convertible notes, derivative liabilities and SAFEs and other income (expense). In the second quarter of 2026 those two lines were $(59,597) million and $(8,448) million.

A post on X by Peter Gostev, who published a visual guide to the S-1, said “c.80% of Anthropic’s $974m operating profit actually came from the interest on their giant cash pile ($100b+)”. The ratio is close, at about 78% by our arithmetic, but the $974 million is operating income before interest. In the filing, the $762 million of interest is reported separately, below that line.

For the first half of 2026 the S-1 reports an operating loss of $693 million and interest income of $1,111 million.

Connecting the Coverage

Our loss piece explained how fair-value charges on convertible notes turned the first half into an $80.7 billion net loss. Our raises piece covered the funding behind the cash. Our compute pieces reported the bill falling to 48% of revenue and the filing’s single compute pool. What is new here is the interest the cash itself now earns.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the interest line and the operating line are separate stories: the $974 million is what the business earned after compute, people and other operating costs, and the $762 million is what the cash earned on its own.

The same filing reports an operating loss of $693 million for the first half of 2026, so the second-quarter operating profit followed a first-quarter loss.

As we read it, the interest is a product of the funding: the S-1 says higher average cash and new short-term investments drove it.

Three Implications

FOR INVESTORS The S-1 reports interest income below operating income, so the $974 million second-quarter operating income excludes the $762 million of interest.

FOR READERS OF THE X DEBATE A post on X by Peter Gostev put interest at c.80% of operating profit; by our arithmetic the ratio is about 78%, but the filing books the two on different lines.

FOR COMPETITORS The S-1 shows $131.7 billion of cash and short-term investments at 30 June 2026, our sum of the two balance-sheet lines.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.

The analysis argues: “The $1T capex cycle is being underwritten by a $1T concentrated demand commitment from two counterparties whose combined free cash flow is deeply negative.”

As we read it, the S-1 shows one of those two counterparties now holding $131.7 billion of cash and short-term investments. The analysis was published in May 2026 and does not discuss this filing.

What Is Not Established

The S-1 gives no yield on the portfolio and no interest figure for the third quarter of 2026. It does not say how long the cash will stay invested or how quickly it will be spent on compute.

The Bottom Line

Anthropic’s S-1 shows $131.7 billion of cash and short-term investments at 30 June 2026 and $762 million of interest income in the second quarter, about 78% of that quarter’s $974 million operating income by our arithmetic. The filing counts the interest below operating income, so the operating profit was earned before it.
