Supermicro Earned $1.6B on $19.9B Sales but Used $434M Cash

What Was Posted on X

Wall St Engine, an account that posts earnings figures on X, shared this card on Supermicro’s quarter at 21:12 UTC on 3 November. Its revenue, earnings-per-share and outlook figures match the company’s release; the estimates in brackets are as cited by the account and we have not verified them. The card does not list the receivables, inventory or deferred revenue lines this piece is built on.

StockSavvyShay posted at 21:47 UTC that Supermicro’s quarterly revenue has nearly 10x over three years, quoting its own earnings card. By our arithmetic from Supermicro’s filings, the September 2026 quarter is about 9.4 times the September 2023 quarter. The outlook figures in StockSavvyShay’s quoted card are the midpoints of Supermicro’s ranges; its estimates are not verified.

Super Micro Computer reported net income of $1.594 billion on record net sales of $19.9 billion for the quarter to 30 September, according to the earnings release it filed with the SEC on 3 November. In the same quarter its operations used $434 million of cash.

The gap sits in working capital. Receivables and inventories absorbed $6.04 billion of cash, while deferred revenue, money billed to customers for products not yet recognised as sales, rose by $3.05 billion. By our arithmetic, that increase in deferred revenue offset 51% of the receivables and inventory build.

Founder and chief executive Charles Liang said Supermicro’s “transformation into a Total AI and IT Datacenter Solution provider continues to accelerate”.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on profit versus cash. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Supermicro.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, a $3.05 billion rise in deferred revenue offset 51% of the $6.04 billion that receivables and inventories absorbed, which is why $1.594 billion of net income became $434 million of cash used in operations.

What Supermicro Reported

Net sales were $19.946 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, against $11.1 billion in the June quarter and $5.018 billion a year earlier. Net income was $1.594 billion, against $1.178 billion in the June quarter and $168 million a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share were $1.75, and $1.81 on a non-GAAP basis.

Gross margin was 12.7%, against 17.5% in the June quarter and 9.3% a year earlier. The company says the figures are preliminary and unaudited because its “financial closing procedures for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 are not yet complete”.

On 20 October, Supermicro estimated revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion and gross margin of 12.0% to 12.5%, against earlier guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Reported net sales were $446 million above the top of that preliminary range, by our arithmetic.

From Supermicro’s net income to its cash flow from operations, quarter to 30 September 2026, $ million,
From Supermicro’s net income to its cash flow from operations, quarter to 30 September 2026, $ million, from its cash flow statement in the 8-K Exhibit 99.1 release of 3 November 2026 (preliminary, unaudited). The grouping of line items and the 51% offset are our arithmetic.

Where the Cash Went

The cash flow statement starts from $1.594 billion of net income and adds $154 million of non-cash items, by our grouping. Receivables then took $3.560 billion and inventories $2.477 billion. Deferred revenue added $3.054 billion, and other working-capital lines added $801 million, by our grouping. The result was $434 million of cash used in operations.

On the balance sheet, accounts receivable rose to $9.685 billion from $6.125 billion at 30 June. Inventories rose to $15.054 billion from $12.896 billion. Current deferred revenue rose to $4.329 billion from $1.578 billion, and non-current deferred revenue to $1.336 billion from $1.034 billion.

Cash and cash equivalents were $6.9 billion at 30 September, and bank debt and convertible notes totalled $8.6 billion, the release says. Cash paid for interest was $110 million, against $39 million a year earlier. A year earlier, operations used $918 million of cash.

Margin Against Volume

Net sales rose 79% from the June quarter while gross profit rose 31%, to $2.541 billion from about $1.943 billion, by our arithmetic from the company’s 10-K and 10-Q filings. Gross margin fell 4.8 points between the two quarters.

The release’s risk language says that “as we increasingly target larger customers and larger sales opportunities, our customer base may become more concentrated, our cost of sales may increase, our margins may be lower”. The release does not name customers or give a customer concentration figure.

What the Outlook Implies

Supermicro expects second-quarter net sales of $19.5 billion to $21.5 billion and fiscal 2027 net sales of $72.0 billion to $82.0 billion. GAAP earnings per diluted share are guided to $1.59 to $1.83.

At the midpoints, the full-year range less the first quarter and the second-quarter outlook leaves about $36.6 billion for the second half, or about $18.3 billion a quarter, by our arithmetic. That average is below the $19.9 billion reported for the first quarter. The release does not give a half-year split.

Against the Card on X

Wall St Engine, an account that posts earnings figures on X, put revenue at $19.9 billion, up 298% year on year, and adjusted earnings per share at $1.81 against an estimate of $1.62. It cited an estimate of $69.17 billion for fiscal 2027 revenue. The revenue, growth and earnings figures match the filing; we have not verified the estimates. The post did not show the June-quarter margin of 17.5% or the working-capital lines.

Another X account, StockSavvyShay, posted that Supermicro’s quarterly revenue has “nearly 10x over past 3 years”. By our arithmetic from Supermicro’s filings, the $19.946 billion for the quarter to September 2026 is about 9.4 times the $2.120 billion it reported for the quarter to September 2023, the first quarter of its fiscal 2024. The card that post quotes gave midpoints rather than ranges for the outlook: $20.5 billion for the second quarter and $77 billion for fiscal 2027, the centres of Supermicro’s $19.5 billion to $21.5 billion and $72.0 billion to $82.0 billion ranges. Its 13% gross margin rounds the 12.7% GAAP and 12.8% non-GAAP figures. We have not verified its estimates.

How Each Side Reads These Figures

For readers who see strength, the figures include record net sales of $19.9 billion, net income of $1.594 billion, sales above the company’s own October range, and a $72 billion to $82 billion fiscal-year outlook.

For readers who see caution, the figures include $434 million of cash used in operations, receivables up $3.6 billion in a quarter, inventories of $15.1 billion, gross margin down from 17.5% to 12.7%, and debt of $8.6 billion against cash of $6.9 billion. We cite no analysts’ views here.

Connecting the Coverage

We reported Supermicro’s preliminary $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion estimate on 20 October. Earlier on 3 November we covered Nvidia’s rack shipments and Nvidia retaking the top market-value spot from Apple. Tonight AMD guided to about $17 billion and added $3.0 billion of inventory.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the quarter shows Supermicro’s growth being financed partly by its customers: billings not yet recognised as sales rose by $3.05 billion, close to twice the quarter’s net income.

As we read it, the margin line and the cash line say the same thing from two sides: sales rose 79% from the June quarter, but gross profit rose 31% and operations used cash, so the larger volume came with thinner margins and more working capital per dollar.

As we read it, the outlook leaves the second half open: at the midpoints, the fiscal-year range implies an average of about $18.3 billion a quarter after December, below the $19.9 billion just reported, by our arithmetic.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.

The framework sets out its questions this way: “How the money flows, where it cracks, what it buys, who can absorb it, and what happens when revenue can’t catch up.”

As we read it, Supermicro’s cash flow statement answers the first of those questions for one supplier this quarter: customers’ billings in advance carried about half of its receivables and inventory build; most of the rest was covered by the quarter’s earnings, and operations used $434 million of cash. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss Supermicro’s quarter.

What Is Not Established

This piece is based on Supermicro’s first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings release, filed as Exhibit 99.1 to its 8-K of 3 November 2026, its preliminary update of 20 October, and its earlier 10-Q and 10-K filings. The 51% offset, the $2.03 billion gap between net income and operating cash flow, the second-half figure and the quarter-on-quarter changes are our arithmetic, not company statements.

The release does not say which customers paid in advance, why receivables rose, or what the inventory is for. The figures are preliminary and the 10-Q had not been filed when we read the release, so its risk factors are not covered. Supermicro scheduled its call for 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time (22:00 UTC); we had not heard it when we wrote this piece. We did not contact Supermicro.

The Bottom Line

Supermicro booked $1.594 billion of net income on $19.9 billion of sales and used $434 million of cash. Receivables and inventories took $6.04 billion; a $3.05 billion rise in deferred revenue offset 51% of that, by our arithmetic.
