Rivian reported on 29 October 2026 that third-quarter revenue was $2.155 billion, up 38% year over year. Its software and services segment made a gross profit of $256 million, according to Rivian’s earnings presentation.
Rivian’s total gross profit was $176 million. By our arithmetic from the statements of operations, automotive revenue of $1.55 billion was $80 million below automotive cost of revenues, so the software segment earned more than the whole company’s gross profit.

Business Pill · Vertical Integration
A short explainer on vertical integration. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Rivian.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Rivian’s software and services segment made a gross profit of $256 million, about 145% of the company’s total gross profit of $176 million, because automotive revenue was $80 million below automotive cost.
Where the Gross Profit Came From
Software and services revenue rose 45% to $605 million. Rivian said the increase came “primarily due to increases in vehicle electrical architecture and software development services from the joint venture with Volkswagen Group”, repair and maintenance services, and its Autonomy+ paid software offering, which began in April 2026.
By our arithmetic, software and services was about 28% of revenue and its $256 million gross profit was about 145% of total gross profit. A year earlier, the segment made $154 million of gross profit against a company total of $24 million.
The release says $354 million, or 59%, of software and services revenue was attributable to the joint venture with Volkswagen Group. Rivian said it also expanded the joint venture, “licensing elements of our AI Voice Assistant technology as part of the broader electrical architecture and software partnership”; TechCrunch reported the expansion under the headline “Rivian expands joint venture with VW to include AI assistant”.
Rivian said it expects to recognize revenue for the Volkswagen joint venture’s development work through approximately mid-2028. On 7 October it announced the funding of a $1 billion, 10-year term loan from Volkswagen Group at a 6.03% fixed rate, the presentation shows.

Wall St Engine on X, 29 Oct: Rivian Q3’26 revenue $2.16B (estimate $1.99B), +38% year on year; EPS -$0.63 (estimate -$0.84); gross profit $176M (estimate $110M).
Autonomy: Point to Point and Uber
Rivian said a limited rollout of its Point to Point feature, in which the vehicle follows a route from start to finish with driver supervision, is expected to begin later this year through an invitation-only program, with the feature expected to be available to all Autonomy+ subscribers in 2027.
Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said: “our autonomy platform is progressing rapidly, and we are super excited about Point to Point”. Rivian said it acquired Third Dimension AI to support its closed loop simulation efforts and will share more at an Autonomy and AI Day on December 9.
The presentation lists a milestone-based Uber investment of $250 million that Rivian targets to receive by the end of 2026, and an additional investment of up to $700 million by Uber targeted through 2031, both subject to conditions and autonomy milestones.
Mind Robotics and the $506 Million Gain
Rivian said Mind Robotics, which it established late last year, “is building universally capable robots to transform industrial work”, and that Rivian is a key customer and launch partner. Its ownership interest was 31.2% on a shares outstanding basis as of 30 September 2026, the presentation shows.
The release says Rivian recognized a $506 million gain in other income during the first nine months of 2026, related to Mind Robotics’ Series A capital raise and deconsolidation. By our reading of the table, the gain was not booked in the third quarter: the quarter’s other (expense) income line was an $8 million expense, against $488 million of income for the nine months.
Losses and Cash
Net loss attributable to common stockholders was $913 million, against $1.173 billion a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA was a loss of $435 million. Free cash flow was negative $1.124 billion, the release shows. Rivian raised its 2026 delivery guidance to 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles, from 65,000 to 70,000.
A Wall St Engine post on X put the consensus revenue estimate at $1.99 billion and the earnings-per-share estimate at a loss of $0.84, against a reported loss of $0.63.
The Structural Read
As we read the presentation, the software segment’s growth leans on the Volkswagen joint venture, which the release says supplied $354 million, or 59%, of software and services revenue.
As we read the release, autonomy is the next product milestone: Rivian said Point to Point is expected for all Autonomy+ subscribers in 2027, and Uber investments of $250 million and up to $700 million are tied to autonomy milestones.
By our reading of the table, the $506 million Mind Robotics gain sits outside the third quarter, since the quarter’s other (expense) income line was an $8 million expense.

The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Embedding Business Model.
The framework puts it this way: “In the embedding era, value comes from what the software connects to.”
As we read it, Rivian’s licensing of its AI voice assistant into the Volkswagen joint venture is one such connection, per its presentation. The framework was published by The Business Engineer and does not discuss Rivian.
