Tractian, an Atlanta company whose customers are in asset-heavy industries looking for physical AI, raised a $130 million Series D at a $1.4 billion valuation, Hypepotamus reported on 22 October 2026, in a round first reported by The Information and led by Sapphire Ventures. Three other physical AI startups announced rounds the same day, and by our arithmetic the four add up to $240 million.
In plain words, physical AI means AI that works on things in the real world, such as factory machines and robots, rather than only on text and images. The other three are Formic, Enact Intelligence and Maxinsights; two more AI startups outside physical AI, Slingshot Insurance and Nirva, also announced rounds that day.
Business Pill · PHYSICAL AI
A short Business Engineer explainer on physical AI: AI that gets a body and works in the real world. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this piece.
The key insight: As we read it, the new number is the cluster: four physical AI startups announced rounds on 22 October that add up to $240 million by our arithmetic, with Tractian’s $130 million Series D at $1.4 billion the largest, according to the reports cited here.
Update (23 Oct): Rivian buys a simulation startup instead of funding one. Rivian announced on 22 October that it has acquired Third Dimension AI, which it describes as having “developed a simulation platform that transforms real-world data into high-fidelity, controllable 3D environments and enables complex driving scenarios to be recreated and varied at scale.” Rivian said financial terms are not being disclosed.
“Simulation is central to how we train and validate our autonomous driving systems,” said James Philbin, Rivian’s SVP of Autonomy & AI, in the release. TechCrunch reported that Third Dimension was founded in 2024, has a team of 15, most of them in the U.K., and raised $7 million in seed funding, and that Rivian plans to use the technology for its driver-assistance features and the self-driving system for robotaxis it plans to supply to Uber.
It is the same bet as the rounds below, simulation and data for machines in the physical world, made through an acquisition rather than a venture round.
The Rounds
| Company | Round | Amount | Valuation | Led by | What it builds | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tractian (Atlanta) | Series D | $130 million | $1.4 billion | Sapphire Ventures | Physical AI for asset-heavy industries | Hypepotamus, citing The Information |
| Formic | Series B plus debt | $50 million in growth capital | Not stated | Mercato Partners (Series B); debt from S2G Investments | Robots for factories, shipped from its Bolingbrook, Illinois facility | Formic release |
| Enact Intelligence (Zurich) | Pre-seed | $30 million | Not stated | Not named; backed by redalpine, Notion Capital and firstminute capital | Robots that sense force and touch through their motors | The Next Web |
| Maxinsights (Santa Clara) | Seed | $30 million | Not stated | Peak XV | Real-world video training data for robots | Pulse 2.0 |
| Slingshot Insurance | Seed | $27 million | Not stated | Rally Ventures and Skyward Group (co-led) | AI-native insurance for the embedded economy | Global Fintech Series |
| Nirva | Pre-Series A | $25 million ($33 million in total) | Not stated | Not named in TechCrunch’s report | A $249 AI pendant that listens to its wearer | TechCrunch |
All six rounds were announced on 22 October 2026. The first four are physical AI; their amounts add to $240 million and all six to $292 million, our arithmetic. Formic’s $50 million includes debt, as its release says.
- Tractian. Other funds in the round include General Catalyst, Y Combinator, Bosch Ventures and N47, Hypepotamus reported, and Tractian’s annual recurring revenue crossed $100 million last month, according to The Information as cited by Hypepotamus.
- Formic. Formic “today announced it has raised $50 million in growth capital,” its release says, including “a Series B led by Mercato Partners” and “debt financing from S2G Investments,” building on more than 750,000 hours of live production across 100+ facilities.
- Enact Intelligence. The Zurich company “builds robots that sense force and touch through their motors, not only cameras,” The Next Web reported; angel investors include Mistral founder Arthur Mensch and Yann LeCun, and Sifted reported it is the largest pre-seed round ever raised in Switzerland, according to The Next Web.
- Maxinsights. The company has collected more than 2 million hours of video, including approximately 1.5 million hours of model-ready data, Pulse 2.0 reported, with Tola Capital, South Park Commons, INCE Capital and Alumni Ventures also in the round.

The Other Two Rounds
Slingshot Insurance emerged from stealth with $27 million in seed financing co-led by Rally Ventures and Skyward Group, Global Fintech Series reported, describing it as an AI-native insurance company built for the embedded economy. Nirva announced a $25 million pre-Series A round, bringing its total raise to $33 million, TechCrunch reported; it plans to start taking orders for its $249 device in November.
Connecting the Coverage
Our Dream Labs piece reported that the start-up founded by former leads of Nvidia’s GR00T robotics research announced $90 million in seed funding on 19 October 2026, led by B Capital. Our Warp piece reported that Kevin Weil is launching a new startup with $215 million, Bloomberg reported on 22 October 2026. Our Sequoia piece reported that venture firms are racing to invest in Emulate, a three-month-old AI startup, Bloomberg reported on 22 October 2026.
What’s new: four physical AI rounds in a single day, led by a company with more than $100 million in recurring revenue, according to The Information as cited by Hypepotamus.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the rounds sit at different layers: Tractian and Formic put AI and robots to work inside factories and other asset-heavy operations, while Maxinsights sells the video data that robots are trained on, according to the reports cited here.
As we read it, the investors span stages, from pre-seed angels such as Arthur Mensch and Yann LeCun at Enact to Sapphire Ventures leading Tractian’s Series D, as the reports state.
As we read it, the evidence on revenue is thin outside Tractian: only Tractian’s recurring revenue is reported, through The Information as cited by Hypepotamus, and only Tractian’s valuation is stated.
Manuel Yves Galliker, Enact Intelligence, to The Next Web
“Silicon Valley has traditionally been very strong in software and AI, but itโs lacking in robotics and hardware engineering talent”
Three Implications
FOR FACTORY OPERATORS Tractian, Formic and Enact all describe products for physical work, from physical AI for asset-heavy industries to robots on factory floors, according to the reports cited here.
FOR ROBOT MAKERS Maxinsights says it has more than 2 million hours of video, about 1.5 million of them model-ready, as Pulse 2.0 reported.
FOR READERS TRACKING VALUATIONS Only Tractian’s valuation, $1.4 billion, is stated in the reports we read; the other five rounds give amounts but not valuations.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.
The framework describes one of its four moats as follows: “The Container Moat โ built by closed data loops inside a customerโs environment, nascent but the deepest position in the stack.”
As we read it, physical AI companies that work inside customers’ plants sit close to that description, since their sensors and robots operate in the customer’s own environment. The framework was published in July 2026 and does not discuss these companies.
What Is Not Established
Only Tractian’s valuation is stated in the reports we read; the other rounds’ valuations are not in them. Tractian’s revenue figure comes from The Information as cited by Hypepotamus; we did not read The Information’s article. The $240 million and $292 million totals are our arithmetic on reported round sizes, and Formic’s includes debt. These are the rounds we found announced on 22 October, not every AI round that day. We did not contact the companies. Nothing here is investment advice.
The Bottom Line
Tractian’s $130 million Series D at $1.4 billion led four physical AI rounds announced on 22 October, which by our arithmetic add up to $240 million, alongside two more AI rounds outside physical AI.
