Roblox’s AI Tool Build Made 70,000 Games as Users Fell 9%

Roblox said on 29 October 2026 that more than 500,000 users have used Build, its new prompt-to-game creation tool, and have published over 70,000 games since its alpha launch, according to its third-quarter shareholder letter.

In the same quarter, Roblox had 138 million daily active users, down 9% from a year earlier, and bookings of $1.7 billion, down 12%, its letter and investor data sheet show. Revenue rose 16% to $1.6 billion.

Business Pill · The Model and the Harness

A short explainer on the model and the harness. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Roblox.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, Build users have published about one game for every seven users, while Roblox’s daily active users fell 9% and hours engaged fell 15% from a year earlier.

What Roblox Reported

Roblox said bookings of $1,697 million surpassed the high end of its guidance range, and were down 12% year over year against “the extraordinary growth we experienced in 2025”. The letter says Q3 bookings were up over 50% on a two-year basis.

Daily active users grew 12% from the second quarter to 138 million and hours engaged reached nearly 34 billion, up 17% from the second quarter, the letter says. The investor data sheet shows daily active users down 9% and hours down 15% from a year earlier.

Operating cash flow was $395 million and free cash flow was $364 million in the quarter, the letter says.

What the Letter Says About AI

Roblox wrote that over the past month “more than 80% of the top 100 games on Roblox” ranked by hours engaged used AI tools to accelerate creation, and that daily asset uploads to the Roblox cloud tripled month over month.

It said two games, Break and Steal an Egg and Huss Valley, “were both created almost entirely with AI and both broke into the Roblox top 20” ranked by concurrent players. Build has launched in alpha in New Zealand, Singapore, Serbia and Thailand, the letter says.

By our arithmetic, Build users have published about one game for every seven users so far. Roblox also said Global Chat averaged nearly 30 million daily messages in the quarter.

Guidance and Legal Costs

For the fourth quarter, Roblox said it expects revenue growth of 4% to 12% and bookings to decline 10% to 15% year over year, with bookings of $1,890 million to $2,000 million. It said its bookings guidance assumes a seasonal decline in daily active users between Q3 and Q4.

Roblox’s reconciliation lists $49 million of legal settlement expenses in the quarter. Its footnote says these include “legal expenses related to settlements and settlement negotiations with certain states and territories” regarding youth-related consumer protection and digital safety matters.

The Structural Read

As we read the letter, Roblox frames AI as lowering the cost of creating games, and says the scarce parts become distribution, discovery and safety, areas it calls unique strengths.

As we read the figures, the year-on-year decline sits against a very high 2025 base: Roblox said bookings were up over 50% on a two-year basis, and users and hours grew from the second quarter.

By our arithmetic from the investor data sheet, daily active users went from 152 million to 138 million and hours engaged from 39.6 billion to 33.8 billion between the third quarters of 2025 and 2026.

FOR DISCOVERY The letter describes recent changes to Roblox’s recommendations in a section titled Surfacing New Content vs. AI Slop.

FOR THE OUTLOOK Roblox guided fourth-quarter bookings to decline 10% to 15% year over year, to $1,890 million to $2,000 million.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework AI & The Harness Theory.

The framework puts it this way: “It is an operating system that wraps your AI โ€” a harness that compresses your thinking, your teamโ€™s feedback, and the modelโ€™s raw capability into something replicable.”

As we read it, Roblox uses the same word for its tools: its letter says Roblox Build and Studio Assistant are harnesses that can support iterative workflows. The framework was published by The Business Engineer and does not discuss Roblox.

What Is Not Established

Roblox does not say how much of its bookings, users or hours come from AI-built games, so the letter does not show whether AI creation is offsetting the drop in engagement. The games-per-user ratio is our arithmetic from two rounded figures. We read the shareholder letter and investor data sheet, not the earnings call. Analyst estimates are not in Roblox’s documents.
