Sandisk Sales Hit $11B at an 85% Margin; Data Centers 44%

Sandisk reported on 29 October 2026 that revenue for its fiscal first quarter of 2027 was $11.0 billion, up 23% from the previous quarter and up 378% from a year earlier, according to its earnings release. Its GAAP gross margin was 85.0%.

Datacenter revenue was $4.80 billion, up 61% in a quarter, against $269 million a year earlier, the release’s end-market table shows. By our arithmetic, that took data centers from about 11.7% of Sandisk’s revenue a year ago to about 43.5% now.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on free cash flow. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Sandisk or these results.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, about 88% of Sandisk’s $2.07 billion quarter-on-quarter revenue increase came from its Datacenter line, which went from about 11.7% of revenue a year ago to about 43.5%.

Where the Growth Came From

Revenue rose by about $2.07 billion from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. By our arithmetic, about 88% of that increase came from the Datacenter line, which added $1.83 billion. Edge revenue rose 7% to $5.83 billion, and Consumer revenue fell 29% to $397 million.

Chief executive David Goeckeler said demand was “driving outpaced growth in our data center business”. GAAP operating income was $8.78 billion and GAAP net income was $8.10 billion, or $52.60 a diluted share before the stock split Sandisk announced.

The Transcript on X, 29 Oct, quoting Sandisk’s CFO on the call: “Data center revenue was $4.8 billion, up 61% sequentially”.

Margins and Cash

Sandisk’s GAAP gross margin was 85.0%, against 84.6% in the previous quarter and 29.8% a year earlier. Cash from operating activities was $6.36 billion, and purchases of property, plant and equipment were $54 million, giving free cash flow of $6.31 billion, the release’s reconciliation shows.

Sandisk said it returned $5.0 billion to stockholders by repurchasing about 3.2 million shares, and announced an eight-for-one forward stock split effective 19 November 2026.

The Memory Squeeze Around It

The release lands in a week of memory results we have reported. SK Hynix posted an 83.3 trillion won profit at an 80% margin, Samsung’s chips earned 99% of its record 107.4 trillion won profit, and Silicon Motion’s sales rose 131% to $560 million. Apple has flagged memory costs.

The Structural Read

As we read the end-market table, the quarter’s growth is concentrated in one line: Datacenter rose 61% in a quarter while Edge rose 7% and Consumer fell 29%.

By our arithmetic, cost of revenue was $1.65 billion against $1.62 billion a year earlier while revenue rose 378%, which is how the GAAP gross margin went from 29.8% to 85.0%; the release does not give a cause.

By our arithmetic, free cash flow of $6.31 billion was more than 100 times the $54 million of property and equipment purchases the release reports for the quarter.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.

The framework puts it this way: “Memory is becoming the new compute.”

As we read it, Sandisk’s end-market table shows that view reaching flash storage, as Datacenter revenue rose 61% in a quarter. The framework was published by The Business Engineer and does not discuss Sandisk or this quarter.

What Is Not Established

The release we read gives revenue by end market but does not split the growth into price per bit and bits shipped, so the piece does not say how much came from higher prices. We read Sandisk’s earnings release only, not its earnings presentation or call. Shares of revenue and the 88% figure are our arithmetic.
