Pinterest reported on 29 October that its third-quarter cost of revenue rose to $261.6 million from $212.3 million, and its quarterly filing attributes the increase to higher infrastructure costs, including investments in additional GPU capacity, and higher payments under partner arrangements.
By our arithmetic, cost of revenue grew 23% while revenue grew 12%, to $1,174 million, and gross margin fell from about 79.8% to about 77.7%.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Pinterest or these results.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Pinterest’s cost of revenue grew 23% while revenue grew 12%, and its 10-Q attributes $28.4 million of the $49.3 million rise to infrastructure costs, including investments in additional GPU capacity.
What the Filing Says About Costs
The 10-Q says cost of revenue rose by $49.3 million in the quarter, and that infrastructure costs rose by $28.4 million “due to increased users and engagement and investments in additional GPU capacity”, as well as higher payments associated with partner arrangements. By our arithmetic, infrastructure was about 58% of the increase.
Research and development rose 15% to $428.1 million, which the filing attributes mainly to a $38.2 million increase in share-based compensation and a 7% increase in personnel expenses. Operating income fell to $30.3 million from $58.5 million.
The filing also describes a restructuring plan, completed in the third quarter, that included “reallocating resources to AI-focused roles and teams that drive AI adoption and execution” and a workforce reduction of less than 15%. Restructuring charges were $65.5 million for the first nine months.

What Was Posted on X
Wall St Engine on X, 29 Oct: Pinterest Q3 revenue $1.17B (estimate $1.21B), MAUs 661M (estimate 653M), and a Q4 revenue guide of $1.43B to $1.48B against an estimate of $1.52B.
Users Up 10%, Revenue per User Up 1%
Monthly active users rose 10% to a record 661 million. Global average revenue per user rose 1% to $1.80, and the 10-Q says revenue growth was “primarily driven by 1% and 4% respective increases in ARPU supported by a 10% increase in average MAUs” for the three and nine months.
The regions moved differently. U.S. and Canada revenue rose 14% to $894 million and ARPU rose 10% to $8.38. Europe revenue was flat at $193 million and European ARPU fell 7% to $1.21. Rest of World revenue rose 24% to $87 million. By our arithmetic, U.S. and Canada users brought in about 6.9 times the revenue per user of European users, and the region supplied about 86% of the quarter’s revenue growth.
AI in Pinterest’s Own Words
Chief executive Bill Ready said in the release: “Our differentiated AI-driven visual search and shopping experiences are making Pinterest increasingly valuable for users and advertisers alike.” The 10-Q says the tvScientific acquisition is expected to “extend our AI-powered performance advertising from mobile to connected TV”, for total purchase consideration of $465.1 million.
Guidance and Expectations
Pinterest guided fourth-quarter revenue of $1,425 million to $1,475 million, 8% to 12% growth, and adjusted EBITDA of $538 million to $588 million. Wall St Engine’s post put consensus at $1.52 billion for revenue and $612 million for adjusted EBITDA; by our arithmetic the revenue midpoint is about 4.6% below that consensus figure.
The Structural Read
As we read the filing, the quarter’s revenue growth came mostly from more users: global revenue per user rose 1% while monthly active users rose 10%.
As we read the regional table, the U.S. and Canada carried the quarter: by our arithmetic it supplied about 86% of revenue growth, while European revenue was flat and European revenue per user fell 7%.
As we read our earlier coverage, the same week Meta reported ad revenue up 25.9% and Alphabet reported Search & other up 12%, while Pinterest reports revenue up 12%.

The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.
The framework says: “Search gives way to assistants.” It places “the end of incumbent dominance in software and search” in what it calls a medium cycle of 10 to 20 years.
Pinterest’s release describes AI-driven visual search and shopping experiences. The framework does not discuss Pinterest, and Pinterest does not use the framework’s terms.
What Is Not Established
The filing does not break out how much of the $28.4 million infrastructure increase came from GPU capacity rather than user growth and engagement. The consensus figures are Wall St Engine’s, not Pinterest’s. The growth rates, gross margins, ratios and shares of growth are our arithmetic from Pinterest’s reported figures.
The Bottom Line
Pinterest grew revenue 12% to $1,174 million on record users, while its cost of revenue rose 23%, which its 10-Q attributes to infrastructure costs, including additional GPU capacity, and partner payments; U.S. and Canada supplied most of the growth and European revenue per user fell.
