Meta reported $63,061 million of advertising revenue for the third quarter of 2026 in its earnings release of 21 October. Alphabet reported $63,350 million of Google Search & other revenue for the same quarter in its release of 28 October.
By our arithmetic, Meta’s advertising line is now $289 million, or 0.46%, short of Google’s Search & other line. In the first quarter of 2023 it was 69.6% of it. Across the 15 quarters from the first quarter of 2023 to the third quarter of 2026, Meta’s advertising revenue grew faster year on year than Google Search & other in every one.

Business Pill · Distribution Advantage
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Meta, Alphabet or these results.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Meta’s third-quarter advertising revenue of $63.06 billion was $289 million, or 0.46%, short of Google Search & other at $63.35 billion, after 15 straight quarters of faster year-on-year growth.
The Post, Checked Against the Filings
Investor Oguz Erkan posted on X on 29 October that “$META ads revenue has caught up with $GOOG search revenue” and that “$META ads have grown faster than $GOOG search every quarter since Q1 2023, so it’ll likely surpass $GOOG search next quarter”.
We rebuilt both lines from 16 Meta releases and 16 Alphabet releases filed as Exhibit 99.1 to their Form 8-K reports on SEC EDGAR. His growth claim matches our arithmetic from those filings: Meta grew faster in all 15 quarters, from 4.1% against 1.9% in the first quarter of 2023 to 25.9% against 12.0% in the third quarter of 2026.
On his first claim, Meta’s third-quarter advertising revenue was still $289 million below Google Search & other. The prediction about next quarter is his; we do not make one.

What Was Posted on X
Investor Oguz Erkan posted that Meta’s ad revenue has caught up with Google Search revenue and has grown faster every quarter since Q1 2023. The figures above check those claims against both companies’ filings.
How the Gap Closed
By our arithmetic, Meta’s advertising revenue rose by $29,418 million between the third quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2026, while Search & other rose by $19,324 million. Meta’s line was 76.4% of Google’s in the third quarter of 2023, 80.8% a year later, 88.5% in the third quarter of 2025 and 99.5% now.
Both lines grew fastest in the first quarter of 2026: Meta’s advertising by 32.9% and Search & other by 19.1%. In the third quarter, Meta’s release says ad impressions across its apps “increased by 10% year-over-year” and average price per ad “increased by 14% year-over-year”.
Over the first nine months of 2026, Meta’s release gives $177,449 million of advertising revenue. By our arithmetic, Google Search & other came to $187,020 million over the same three quarters.
What Each Company Says About AI
Meta’s third-quarter release, in its CFO outlook commentary, says: “Our AI investments are already delivering substantial incremental advertising revenue through stronger engagement, better recommendations, and more efficient monetization”. Its consumer model launches are in our piece on Meta’s Muse models.
On Alphabet’s call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler listed the causes of the slowdown in Search from the second quarter. He said “FX … was the single largest driver of search deceleration relative to Q2”, and also that “the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode”. He said “the majority of AI Mode queries are incremental”.
Chief financial officer Anat Ashkenazi said on the call that Alphabet “left about three points of growth versus Q3” from lapping the late-2025 acceleration, “and then we expect to see that continue in Q4, a couple points”. The full Search revenue-and-queries comparison is in our piece on Search revenue growth slowing to 12%, and the two-year record of Google’s AI query claims is in our timeline of Google’s AI query claims.
The Same Arithmetic, One Quarter On
Applying each line’s third-quarter growth rate to its fourth-quarter 2025 base gives $73,203 million for Meta’s advertising and $70,636 million for Search & other, by our arithmetic. That is a mechanical calculation on past rates, not a forecast. Ashkenazi said on the call that Alphabet expects “slightly larger FX headwinds” in the fourth quarter, mainly in Search and YouTube ads, on top of the lapping effect. Meta’s release guides fourth-quarter total revenue to “be in the range of $73-76 billion” without a separate advertising figure.
The Structural Read
As we read the two sets of releases, the gap closed because Meta grew faster, not because Search shrank: from the third quarter of 2023 to the third quarter of 2026, Meta’s quarterly advertising revenue rose by $29.4 billion and Search & other by $19.3 billion.
As we read Meta’s release, its third-quarter growth came from both volume and price: ad impressions up 10% and average price per ad up 14% year on year.
As we read the comparison, Google’s full advertising business is still larger: $82.0 billion in the quarter across Search & other, YouTube ads and Google Network, against Meta’s $63.1 billion.

Three Implications
FOR ADVERTISERS Schindler said on the call that ads in AI Mode are expanding to international markets, alongside multi-turn ads in AI Mode in the US, and that AI Mode monetised at lower levels during the quarter.
FOR INVESTORS By our arithmetic, Meta’s advertising revenue was 76.9% of Alphabet’s total Google advertising of $82.0 billion in the third quarter.
FOR ANALYSTS Ashkenazi said on the call that Alphabet expects slightly larger currency headwinds in the fourth quarter, mainly in Search and YouTube ads; Meta guides fourth-quarter total revenue to $73 billion to $76 billion.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.
The framework says: “Search gives way to assistants.” It places “the end of incumbent dominance in software and search” in what it calls a medium cycle of 10 to 20 years.
Alphabet’s filings show Search & other still growing, by 12.0% in the third quarter, while Meta’s advertising grew 25.9%. The framework does not discuss these results, and neither company attributes the gap to assistants.
What Is Not Established
The two lines are not the same thing. Meta’s advertising line covers all ads across its apps worldwide. Google Search & other is one of Alphabet’s three advertising lines; with YouTube ads ($11,207 million) and Google Network ($7,455 million), Alphabet’s release puts total Google advertising at $82,012 million for the quarter. By our arithmetic, Meta’s advertising revenue was 76.9% of that total.
Neither company breaks out how much of its advertising revenue comes from AI products, and the filings do not say which advertisers moved budgets between the two. The year-on-year growth rates and ratios in this piece are our arithmetic from the reported quarterly figures.
The Bottom Line
In their own third-quarter releases, Meta reported $63,061 million of advertising revenue and Alphabet $63,350 million of Google Search & other revenue. By our arithmetic, the gap is $289 million, and Meta’s advertising grew faster in each of the 15 quarters since the start of 2023. Google’s total advertising, at $82,012 million, remains larger.
Go deeper: By our arithmetic from the three companies’ third-quarter 2026 filings, Meta added about 57% of the $22.7 billion year-on-year increase in advertising revenue across Alphabet, Meta and Amazon, while Google held about half of the combined $164.7 billion.
