Alphabet, Meta and Amazon together reported $164.7 billion of advertising revenue in the third quarter of 2026, by our arithmetic from their earnings releases filed with the SEC between 21 and 29 October.
Meta added $13.0 billion of that year on year, about 57% of the three companies’ combined $22.7 billion increase. Google added $7.8 billion, about 34%, and Amazon $1.9 billion, about 8.5%.

Business Pill · Distribution advantage
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It explains the general idea and does not discuss Alphabet, Meta or Amazon.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Meta added about 57% of the $22.7 billion year-on-year increase in advertising revenue across Alphabet, Meta and Amazon while holding about 38% of their combined revenue; Google held about half and added about a third.
The Three Lines, From the Filings
Alphabet’s release puts Google advertising at $82,012 million in the quarter, against $74,182 million a year earlier. Within it, Google Search & other was $63,350 million against $56,567 million, YouTube ads $11,207 million against $10,261 million, and Google Network $7,455 million against $7,354 million.
Meta’s release puts advertising at $63,061 million against $50,082 million a year earlier. Amazon’s release puts advertising services at $19,637 million against $17,703 million.
By our arithmetic, that is growth of about 25.9% at Meta, about 10.6% for Google advertising (12.0% for Search & other alone) and about 10.9% at Amazon, or 12% excluding currency moves according to Amazon’s release.

Size Against Growth
By our arithmetic, Google held about 49.8% of the three companies’ combined ad revenue in the quarter, Meta about 38.3% and Amazon about 11.9%. Their shares of the year-on-year dollar increase were about 34.4%, 57.1% and 8.5%.
In dollars, by our arithmetic, Meta’s $13.0 billion increase was about 1.66 times Google’s $7.8 billion. Our earlier piece covered how close Meta’s advertising line now sits to Google Search & other on its own: $63.06 billion against $63.35 billion.
What Each Company Says AI Is Doing to Ads
Meta’s release, in its CFO outlook commentary, says: “Our AI investments are already delivering substantial incremental advertising revenue through stronger engagement, better recommendations, and more efficient monetization”.
On Alphabet’s call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler said “FX … was the single largest driver of search deceleration relative to Q2”, and that “the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode”. He also said “the majority of AI Mode queries are incremental”. Our paid-clicks piece covered the volume and price split behind Search, and our analysis of Alphabet’s share drop covered how the market read it.
Amazon’s release describes Amazon Ads Agent as “bringing together Amazon’s full offering under a single, AI-first platform”, and Full-Funnel Campaigns this way: “Advertisers provide initial inputs, then Amazon’s AI plans, executes, and continuously optimizes the rest”. Our Amazon ads piece covered the quarter’s slowdown, which Amazon ties to Prime Day timing.
Update (30 Oct): Where Microsoft fits. Microsoft’s 10-Q for the quarter to 30 September 2026 lists Search and advertising revenue of $6,554 million, against $5,942 million a year earlier. The filing says the line includes Bing, Microsoft Edge, LinkedIn Marketing Solutions and Premium Subscriptions, third-party affiliates and MSN, so it mixes subscriptions with advertising and is not directly comparable with the three advertising lines above; we leave it out of the shares. By our arithmetic it grew about 10.3%, or $612 million, and the 10-Q says the line excluding traffic acquisition costs grew 12%. By our arithmetic, Amazon’s $19,637 million of advertising services is about 3.0 times Microsoft’s line, and Amazon’s $1.9 billion increase about 3.2 times Microsoft’s.
The Smaller Platforms
Reddit’s shareholder letter says “Advertising revenue of $847 million grew 54% year-over-year” and “Our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter”. Our Reddit piece covered its user warning.
Pinterest’s release shows revenue of $1,173.9 million, up 12% from $1,049.2 million, and quotes chief executive Bill Ready: “Our differentiated AI-driven visual search and shopping experiences are making Pinterest increasingly valuable for users and advertisers alike”. Our Pinterest piece covered its rising cost of revenue.
Microsoft’s release for the same quarter says “Search and advertising revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs increased 12%”, without a dollar figure in the text read for this piece.
The Structural Read
By our arithmetic, Meta’s $13.0 billion increase was about 1.66 times Google’s $7.8 billion, though Google’s advertising line is the larger one.
As we read the filings and the call, each company now names AI as a mechanism in its ad business: Meta for engagement, recommendations and monetization, Alphabet for AI Mode queries that its chief business officer said monetized lower in the quarter, and Amazon for an AI-first ads platform and campaigns that its AI plans, executes and optimizes.
As we read the smaller platforms’ documents, Reddit’s letter reports search referral traffic down meaningfully in the same quarter that its advertising revenue grew 54%.
Meta Q3 2026 earnings release, CFO outlook commentary
“Our AI investments are already delivering substantial incremental advertising revenue through stronger engagement, better recommendations, and more efficient monetization”
Three Implications
FOR ADVERTISERS The releases describe AI tools that plan and run campaigns, such as Amazon’s Full-Funnel Campaigns, and, in Meta’s words, better recommendations and more efficient monetization from its AI investments.
FOR INVESTORS By our arithmetic, the three companies’ combined advertising revenue grew about 16.0% year on year, with Meta supplying more than half of the dollar increase.
FOR RIVALS Alphabet’s chief business officer said on the call that AI Mode queries monetized lower in the quarter, while Reddit’s letter says its search referral traffic was down meaningfully.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Embedding Business Model.
The framework puts it in one line: “Your product stops being the thing companies buy and becomes the thing other systems assume exists.”
As we read it, ad systems that recommend, rank and run campaigns on an advertiser’s behalf fit the embedding side of that line. The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss these companies’ third-quarter results.
What Is Not Established
The three companies define their lines differently: Google advertising includes Search, YouTube and Network; Meta reports one advertising line; Amazon reports advertising services. Combining them is our arithmetic, not a market-size estimate, and it excludes Microsoft, Reddit, Pinterest and every other seller. None of the releases splits revenue by whether an ad was shown or bought through an AI product, so the AI statements above are each company’s own description, not a measured share.
The Bottom Line
By our arithmetic from the third-quarter filings, Meta added about 57% of the $22.7 billion year-on-year increase in advertising revenue across Alphabet, Meta and Amazon while holding about 38% of the combined revenue; Google held about half of the revenue and added about a third of the increase.

A note on sourcing. Alphabet, Meta and Amazon figures come from their third-quarter 2026 earnings releases, filed with the SEC as Exhibit 99.1 to Form 8-K; Reddit, Pinterest and Microsoft figures come from their own third-quarter releases or letters. Alphabet call quotes are from a live-caption transcript. Combined totals, shares and growth rates are our arithmetic; the companies define their advertising lines differently.
