Amazon’s Ad Miss Was 1.7x Its AWS Beat as Shares Slid

Amazon’s advertising revenue came in $1.18 billion below the StreetAccount estimate cited by CNBC, while AWS beat its estimate by $0.69 billion; by our arithmetic, the advertising shortfall was about 1.7 times the AWS beat. CNBC reported that Amazon shares “plunged more than 7% in extended trading Thursday” after the third-quarter release.

Yahoo Finance quote data read at 20:42 UTC put Amazon at $232.05, 4.8% below its $243.79 regular-session close, after a low of $214.01 at 20:03 UTC. By our arithmetic, using the 10.79 billion shares on its last 10-Q cover, that is about $127 billion of market value lost after hours at 20:42 UTC, and about $321 billion at the low.

Business Pill · Free Cash Flow

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on free cash flow. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Amazon or any company in this piece.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, Amazon’s advertising revenue missed the StreetAccount estimate cited by CNBC by about 1.7 times as much as AWS beat its own, and the release kept 2026 cash capex at about $220 billion.

Where the Estimates Missed

CNBC put earnings per share at $1.89 against $1.96 estimated, and revenue at $201.94 billion against $202.31 billion, from analysts polled by LSEG. By our arithmetic, revenue was $0.37 billion short of that estimate.

The two segment estimates CNBC cited from StreetAccount pulled in opposite directions. Amazon Web Services came in at $45.98 billion against $45.29 billion, and advertising at $19.64 billion against $20.82 billion.

The release puts advertising services at $19,637 million, up 11%, and 12% excluding foreign exchange, against 26% excluding foreign exchange in the second quarter. Amazon says the third quarter was “impacted by timing anomalies primarily related to Prime Day (and a couple other timing factors)” and that it expects advertising revenue “to grow in the high teens in fourth quarter 2026”. The detail is in our piece on Amazon’s ad sales.

What Was Posted on X

Wall St Engine on X, 29 Oct: Amazon Q3 revenue $201.9B (est. $202.3B), EPS $1.89 (est. $1.96), AWS sales $46.0B (est. $45.4B), capex $77.3B (est. $57.47B), advertising $19.6B (est. $20.87B) and a Q4 operating-income guide of $28.5B-$33.5B (est. $33.1B).

What happened next (29 Oct): Yahoo Finance quotes showed Amazon at $228.00 at 21:23 UTC after a $243.79 close, a 6.5% fall by our arithmetic, with nine of the ten companies we covered that evening below their close; by our arithmetic the ten moved a net $290.8 billion of market value. The Guide and the Cash

Amazon guided fourth-quarter operating income to between $28.5 billion and $33.5 billion. The Wall St Engine post shared by the owner put the estimate at $33.1 billion; by our arithmetic, the $31.0 billion midpoint is $2.1 billion below it.

The cash flow statement shows $77,259 million of property and equipment purchases in the quarter, against $42,422 million of operating cash, and $48,102 million of proceeds from long-term debt. The Wall St Engine post put the capex estimate at $57.47 billion. The release puts trailing twelve-month free cash flow at an outflow of $42.4 billion, as set out in our piece on Amazon’s cash and debt.

The release keeps 2026 cash capital expenditures at “approximately $220 billion”. By our arithmetic, with $175,670 million spent in the first nine months, that leaves about $44.3 billion for the fourth quarter, as worked through in our piece on Jassy’s AWS projection.

AWS and the Margin

AWS net sales rose to $45,984 million from $33,006 million, and the release says AWS reached a “$184 billion annualized revenue run rate”. Operating income was $28.1 billion, which the release calls “Amazon’s highest operating margin ever” at 13.9%. The segment numbers are in our piece on AWS sales rising 39%, and the Bedrock and agent figures in our piece on Bedrock tokens.

Against Alphabet’s Drop

Earlier on 29 October, our piece on Alphabet’s market reaction put Alphabet’s market value loss at about $507 billion at 13:46 UTC, by our arithmetic. Amazon’s regular session on 29 October, before its release, had already closed 4.2% below the 28 October close of $254.60, by our arithmetic about $117 billion. Microsoft closed the session at $530.14 and traded at $528.19 at 20:40 UTC.

How Alphabet’s drop broke down is in our piece unpacking Alphabet’s drop.

The Structural Read

As we read the estimates CNBC cited, AWS beat by $0.69 billion while advertising missed by $1.18 billion, so the two segment surprises netted to a shortfall of about $0.49 billion by our arithmetic.

By our arithmetic, Amazon’s extended-hours trading swung from 12.2% below the close at 20:03 UTC to 4.8% below at 20:42 UTC, a range worth about $194 billion on the 10-Q share count.

As we read the release, the advertising slowdown from 26% to 12% excluding foreign exchange is the line Amazon itself explains, citing Prime Day timing, and it guides advertising back to high-teens growth in the fourth quarter.

Three Implications

FOR INVESTORS By our arithmetic, the $31.0 billion midpoint of Amazon’s fourth-quarter operating-income guide is $2.1 billion below the $33.1 billion estimate in the Wall St Engine post.

FOR ADVERTISERS AND RIVALS The release puts advertising services at $19,637 million, up 11%, against $19,809 million in the second quarter.

FOR READERS TRACKING CAPEX The release keeps 2026 cash capital expenditures at approximately $220 billion; by our arithmetic that leaves about $44.3 billion for the fourth quarter after $175,670 million in the first nine months.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.

The framework sets out to map the financing of AI: “How the money flows, where it cracks, what it buys, who can absorb it, and what happens when revenue can’t catch up.”

As we read it, Amazon’s quarter puts the “what happens when revenue can’t catch up” question to a business whose advertising line missed while AWS beat. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss this quarter.

What Is Not Established

No source we read splits Amazon’s share move between advertising, guidance, capex and AWS; the comparison of the advertising shortfall with the AWS beat is our arithmetic on the StreetAccount estimates CNBC cited, not the market’s stated reason. The capex and operating-income estimates come from the Wall St Engine post, which we did not confirm with a second source.

The $127 billion and $321 billion are extended-hours snapshots at 20:42 and 20:03 UTC using the 22 July 2026 share count; the earnings call had not started when we wrote. Polymarket’s “plunge -13.48%” post is its own figure, and we do not know which price it used.
