Reddit Warns Its 130M Daily Users Could Fall on Search Drop

Reddit told shareholders on 29 October that search referral traffic was down meaningfully in the third quarter and kept falling in October, and that if the decline continues, its 130 million daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter.

By our arithmetic, a 10% fall from the 130.3 million average Reddit reported for the third quarter would be about 13 million daily uniques. The same letter reports U.S. revenue up 50% to $718.9 million while U.S. daily uniques fell 2%.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Reddit or these results.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, a 10% fall from the 130.3 million daily uniques Reddit reported would be about 13 million users, the scale of the low-double-digit decline Reddit says is possible in the fourth quarter if October’s search-referral trend continues.

What Reddit Said About Search

The letter says: “Our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter.” It adds that the biggest impact was on logged-out and web traffic, with some flowing through to logged-in and app users.

On October it says: “During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week.” It then says: “If this rate of decline continues, current trends would suggest that total DAUqs could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million DAUqs.”

Reddit frames the change as a shift in how people search. The letter says “Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself” and that “AI search solves a different problem than Reddit”.

What Was Posted on X

Wall St Engine on X, 29 Oct, summarising Reddit’s Q3 2026 results against consensus: revenue $895M (est. $878.4M), U.S. DAUq 50.7M (est. 53.4M), Q4 revenue guide $1.00B-$1.03B (est. $1.05B).

Fewer U.S. Users, More Revenue per User

Reddit reported third-quarter revenue of $895 million, up 53%, with ad revenue of $847 million, up 54%, and Other revenue of $48 million, up 35%. Average daily active uniques were 130.3 million, up 12%.

The U.S. went the other way on users. U.S. daily uniques fell 2% to 50.7 million, and U.S. logged-out daily uniques fell 4% to 27.3 million, while U.S. logged-in daily uniques rose 1% to 23.4 million. International daily uniques grew 24% to 79.6 million.

Revenue per user rose. Reddit puts U.S. average revenue per unique at $13.82, up 53% from $9.04, and U.S. revenue at $718.9 million, up 50%. By our arithmetic, logged-out users were about 59% of global daily uniques in the quarter (76.8 million of 130.3 million).

Reddit’s Response: Logged-In Users and the App

The letter says logged-in and app users “make up the vast majority of engagement, and over 80% of the monetization on Reddit”, and that it grew app and logged-in daily uniques from the second quarter.

It says Reddit is shifting to a logged-in-only experience and will begin fully testing it in select markets outside the U.S. in the fourth quarter. It also says only about 13% of eligible mobile web users are currently seeing the prompt to convert to the app.

For the fourth quarter Reddit guided revenue of $1,000 million to $1,030 million and adjusted EBITDA of $480 million to $510 million. Wall St Engine’s post put consensus at $1.05 billion for revenue and $512 million for adjusted EBITDA.

The Structural Read

As we read the letter, Reddit is separating two businesses: search-referred, logged-out visitors, where traffic is falling, and logged-in and app users, which it says carry over 80% of monetization.

As we read the numbers, U.S. revenue grew 50% while U.S. daily uniques fell 2%, so the U.S. growth came from revenue per user: U.S. ARPU rose 53% to $13.82.

As we read our earlier coverage, the same week Alphabet reported slower paid-click growth and lower monetization in AI Mode, while Reddit reports fewer referrals from search.

Three Implications

FOR ADVERTISERS Reddit says logged-in and app users make up over 80% of its monetization and that it grew both from the second quarter.

FOR INVESTORS Reddit guided fourth-quarter revenue of $1,000 million to $1,030 million; Wall St Engine’s post put consensus at $1.05 billion.

FOR PUBLISHERS Reddit says it will begin fully testing a logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the U.S. in the fourth quarter.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.

The framework says: “Search gives way to assistants.” It places “the end of incumbent dominance in software and search” in what it calls a medium cycle of 10 to 20 years.

Reddit’s letter describes web search becoming an AI-powered destination and says its search referral traffic fell. The framework does not discuss Reddit, and Reddit does not use the framework’s terms.

Update, 29 Oct: TechCrunch framed the results under the headline “As search traffic dries up, Reddit announces it’s shifting to a logged-in experience,” writing that Reddit is rethinking its relationship with the open internet amid the shift to AI-powered search. In its own words, Reddit’s letter says “a key piece of work to retain new audiences is shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience” and that it will begin fully testing this in select markets outside the U.S. in the fourth quarter. The letter adds that the change “allows us to protect access to Reddit’s extremely valuable corpus of data”.

What Is Not Established

The low-double-digit decline is a conditional scenario Reddit ties to October’s trend continuing; it is not part of Reddit’s fourth-quarter guidance, which covers revenue and adjusted EBITDA. The consensus figures are Wall St Engine’s, not Reddit’s. The 10% illustration and the logged-out share are our arithmetic.

The Bottom Line

Reddit reported revenue up 53% to $895 million, but told shareholders that falling search referrals hit logged-out and web traffic hardest and that, if October’s rate of decline continues, total daily uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter.

Go deeper: Reddit, Alphabet and OpenAI each published search figures on 29 October 2026; by our arithmetic, Google’s paid-click growth fell from 13% to 8% and ChatGPT search’s EU audience growth fell from about 32% to about 17% per six months, while Google’s cost-per-click growth rose from 3% to 4%.

What happened next (follow-up published 30 Oct): Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told investors on 29 October that Google’s AI Mode does not drive traffic, according to The Verge and AdExchanger, and Reuters reports he said Google is crawling Reddit as hard as ever. By our arithmetic, Reddit’s fourth-quarter revenue guidance is 12% to 15% above the third quarter.
