Reddit CEO Says Google AI Mode Drives No Traffic, Guides $1B

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told investors on 29 October that “The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic”, according to The Verge and AdExchanger. AdExchanger quotes him adding “not for us and not for anybody, as far as I know”. Reuters reports he also said “Google is crawling us as hard as ever, so the demand hasn’t changed from their point of view either”.

On the same day Reddit guided fourth-quarter revenue of $1,000 million to $1,030 million. By our arithmetic that is 12% to 15% above the $895 million it reported for the third quarter, in a quarter its own letter says daily users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage if October’s search trend continues.

Short explainer · Reddit and AI Mode

A vertical news Short narrated from this piece’s headline and opening line.

Business Pill · Distribution Advantage

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Reddit or Google.

The key insight: Reddit’s CEO says Google’s AI Mode does not drive traffic while Google keeps crawling the site, yet Reddit guides fourth-quarter revenue 12% to 15% above the third quarter, by our arithmetic, and plans a login wall aimed at the 59% of daily users who are logged out.

Market reaction (30 Oct, 16:09 UTC): Reddit shares traded at $91.65, down 29.3% from the 29 October close of $129.60 (our arithmetic from Yahoo Finance prices, intraday). That is larger than any full-session fall in Reddit’s daily closing prices since its March 2024 listing; the previous worst was 21.0% on 31 July 2026 (our arithmetic from Yahoo daily closes). The trading day was not over at the time of writing.

What Huffman Said About Google

AdExchanger quotes Huffman calling the change “a fundamental shift in how Google works” and adding: “It used to be a traffic driver. Now it’s not.” The Verge reports the same lines with slightly different punctuation.

Huffman also said “People still want Reddit”, The Verge reports. AdExchanger writes that he said the word Reddit still ranks among the most-searched terms on Google in the U.S., which it reads as a sign that demand for Reddit has not changed while Google sends less of that traffic on.

Wall St Engine posted the call excerpts on X, above, where the post had about 211,000 views when we read it on 30 October. It also attributes two further lines to Huffman that we could not find in the Reuters, Verge or AdExchanger reports, so we do not quote them here.

Reddit fourth-quarter 2026 guidance and user scenario, indexed to third-quarter actuals = 100: revenue guide $1,000M to $1,030M vs $895M (+11.7% to +15.1%), adjusted EBITDA low end $480M vs $402M (+19.4%), and daily uniques at a 10% fall (illustrating the low-double-digit scenario Reddit gives if October’s search trend continues). What Was Posted on X

The Kobeissi Letter quotes Huffman’s AI Mode line, says Google’s stock erased $480 billion in the 24 hours before it, and argues that AI is changing how people reach websites. The $480 billion is the post’s figure.

Crawled, Not Clicked

Reddit’s Q3 letter says “Our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter” and that in October search traffic “has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week”. Our earlier piece covers that letter and its user scenario in full.

On data, Reuters quotes a statement from Huffman: “We will continue licensing our corpus intentionally, but those commercial deals come with guardrails that protect our users and our business”. The letter says moving to a logged-in Reddit “allows us to protect access to Reddit’s extremely valuable corpus of data”.

Google’s side of the same week is in its own filings and call. Alphabet’s 10-Q shows Google paid clicks up 8% and cost-per-click up 4%, as we set out next to Reddit’s referral figures, and Google’s Philipp Schindler said on Alphabet’s call that AI Mode queries came with lower monetization. Google this week also took AI Mode ads global.

The Login Wall

The letter calls the response “a key piece of work to retain new audiences is shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience” and says “It is better for our business because we will have more signals for ads targeting”. Reddit says it will begin testing it in Q4 in select markets outside the U.S., and that logged-in and app users account for “over 80% of the monetization on Reddit”.

The letter’s user table shows 76.8 million logged-out daily uniques and 53.5 million logged-in in the third quarter. By our arithmetic, 59% of Reddit’s 130.3 million daily uniques were logged out, the group the wall is aimed at. AdExchanger quotes Huffman describing the goal as to “make Reddit a direct daily habit for more people”.

Wall St Engine’s second post, above, summarises the results, the Q4 login tests and the search-traffic warning.

Revenue Up, Users at Risk

Reddit’s release gives fourth-quarter guidance of “Revenue in the range of $1,000 million to $1,030 million” and adjusted EBITDA of $480 million to $510 million, against $402 million in the third quarter. By our arithmetic that implies an adjusted EBITDA margin of 48.0% to 49.5%, up from 44.9%.

Reuters reports that Reddit shares fell 18% in extended trading and that U.S. daily uniques fell 2% to 50.7 million, their first decline since the 2024 listing. It also reports that CFO Drew Vollero said Reddit’s next “internal north star is $5 billion in revenue”, after crossing $3 billion over the last 12 months.

The guidance and the user scenario are separate statements: Reddit ties the possible low-double-digit fall in daily uniques to October’s search trend continuing, and does not say how it is reflected in the revenue range. Google’s own figures on paid clicks are in our Alphabet 10-Q piece, and the longer record of its AI query claims is in our two-year comparison.

The Structural Read

As we read it, Huffman separates two kinds of Google demand: the crawler still takes Reddit’s content, Reuters reports him saying, while AI Mode does not send the readers back, as The Verge and AdExchanger report.

As we read the letter, the login wall is the counter-move: Reddit says it brings more signals for ads targeting and protects access to its corpus, at the cost of the logged-out reach that search referrals used to supply.

By our arithmetic, the fourth-quarter revenue range is 12% to 15% above the third quarter while Reddit warns daily uniques could fall; the letter does not say how much of the user scenario is in the range.

Three Implications

FOR REDDIT ADVERTISERS Reddit says logged-in and app users account for over 80% of its monetization and that a logged-in Reddit gives more signals for ads targeting.

FOR PUBLISHERS THAT RELY ON GOOGLE Huffman’s remark, as AdExchanger reports it, extends his AI Mode point beyond Reddit, though he qualifies it with as far as I know.

FOR AI DATA BUYERS Reuters quotes Huffman saying Reddit will keep licensing its corpus with guardrails, and the letter ties the login wall to protecting access to that data.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.

The framework puts it this way: “The Corpus Moat — built by pretraining, eroding as the public web is exhausted and synthetic data closes gaps.”

As we read it, Reddit is trying to keep its corpus on the valuable side of that moat: the letter says a logged-in Reddit protects access to its corpus of data, and Reuters quotes Huffman saying licensing deals come with guardrails. The framework was published in July 2026 and does not discuss Reddit.

What Is Not Established

We have not read an official call transcript. The quotations come from Reuters, The Verge and AdExchanger, whose versions of the AI Mode line differ slightly in wording. Google’s response to Huffman’s remarks is not in these reports, and we did not contact Google or Reddit. The 12% to 15%, the margins and the 59% are our arithmetic from Reddit’s release and letter.

Execution Fault Lines, Concentrated Demand, and Geopolitical Firewalls

This week’s issue: the AI build is not short of demand for its parts. It is short of cheap money, and its end revenue rests on a narrow base of large, often venture-funded buyers.

The Bottom Line

Reddit’s CEO says Google’s AI Mode does not drive traffic while Google keeps crawling the site, and Reddit is answering with a login wall aimed at the 59% of daily users who are logged out, by our arithmetic. Its own guidance still has fourth-quarter revenue 12% to 15% above the third quarter.

What happened next (follow-up published 30 Oct): Alphabet’s release shows Google Search & other revenue up $6,783 million and Google Network up $101 million in the third quarter, about $67 for every $1 by our arithmetic, and its 10-Q records a decrease in AdSense revenues. Reddit’s U.S. users, 39% of daily uniques, brought about 80% of its third-quarter revenue, by our arithmetic.

A note on sourcing. Huffman’s quotations come from Reuters, The Verge and AdExchanger reports of the 29 October call; Reddit’s figures come from its third-quarter 2026 letter to shareholders and earnings release. The percentage changes, margins and the 59% logged-out share are our arithmetic. We did not contact Reddit or Google.
