Coinbase Pitches AI Agents as Trading Revenue Falls 44%

Coinbase reported on 29 October 2026 that third-quarter total revenue was $1.22 billion, down 35% year over year. Transaction revenue fell 44% to $590 million, its shareholder letter filed with the SEC shows.

The same letter says “The next frontier is agentic and on Coinbase”. CEO Brian Armstrong said in the earnings presentation that “Agentic finance is projected to process $3 to $5 trillion of transactions by 2030, and Coinbase is building the most AI-enabled financial account”.

Business Pill · Agentic Commerce

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on agentic commerce: what changes when the shopper is an AI agent. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Coinbase.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, Coinbase’s $715.0 million gain on crypto held for investment was about 11.6 times its $61.7 million operating income in the third quarter, the quarter its letter called agents “The next frontier”.

What Coinbase Says About AI Agents

Armstrong said in the presentation: “There will soon be more agents than humans in the economy”. He described Coinbase’s goal as building the best place to grow, use and move money “whether you’re a person, a business, or increasingly, an AI agent”.

The letter credits the $3 trillion to $5 trillion figure to a McKinsey forecast, in the line “Agents forecasted to process $3-5T of transactions by 2030”. It also calls crypto “the native execution rail for the agent-led economy”.

The letter reports total payments volume on the Coinbase Developer Platform growing at a 160% quarterly compound rate from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2026. Its definition adds that “x402 micropayment protocol volume is not included in this figure”.

What Was Posted on X

Wall St Engine on X, 29 Oct: Coinbase Q3’26 revenue $1.22B (estimate $1.23B), EPS $2.51 (estimate -$0.06), transaction revenue $590M, subscription and services $570M, and prediction markets at $200M+ annualized revenue.

Where the Revenue Came From

The letter’s appendix shows transaction revenue of $590.2 million, against $1,046.3 million a year earlier. Subscription and services revenue was $570.2 million, against $716.6 million, and corporate interest and other income was $55.1 million, against $105.8 million.

By our arithmetic, revenue outside transaction fees, meaning subscription and services plus corporate interest and other income, was about 51% of total revenue, up from about 44% a year earlier. Coinbase says subscription and services represented 49% of net revenue.

Stablecoin revenue was $307 million, up 5% from the second quarter, and the letter puts average USDC held in Coinbase products at $22 billion. Armstrong said Coinbase captures “about 50% of all USDC economics”.

Coinbase says prediction markets passed $200 million in annualized revenue in the quarter. By our arithmetic, that is about $50 million a quarter, or about 8.5% of third-quarter transaction revenue. The letter says “Prediction market growth cushioned transaction revenue”.

The Profit Came From a Crypto Gain

The income statement in the letter shows operating income of $61.7 million and a $715.0 million gain on crypto assets held for investment. Net income was $718.7 million, or $2.51 per diluted share.

By our arithmetic, the crypto gain was about 11.6 times operating income. Wall St Engine’s post on X put the consensus estimate for earnings per share at a loss of $0.06 and for revenue at $1.23 billion.

The Fourth-Quarter Outlook

Coinbase says transaction revenue was about $165 million in the fourth quarter through 25 October, and it guides subscription and services revenue to $550 million to $630 million. CFO Alesia Haas said: “we are again lowering and narrowing our 2026 adjusted expense guidance to $4.15 to $4.3 billion”.

The letter’s expense section is headed “Demonstrating cost discipline while investing strategically and driving productivity with AI”. It says transaction expense rose to 17% of net revenue, driven by exchange fees associated with prediction markets growth.

The Structural Read

As we read the letter, the agent case rests on a forecast the letter credits to McKinsey, $3 trillion to $5 trillion of agent transactions by 2030, rather than on a revenue line Coinbase reports today.

By our arithmetic, revenue outside transaction fees rose to about 51% of the total from about 44% a year earlier, as transaction revenue fell by about $456 million.

As we read the presentation, Coinbase names three priorities for 2026: the Everything Exchange, stablecoins and payments, and onchain, and Armstrong placed AI agents alongside people and businesses as users of its accounts.

Three Implications

FOR REVENUE MIX The letter shows subscription and services revenue of $570.2 million against $590.2 million of transaction revenue.

FOR STABLECOINS The letter shows stablecoin revenue of $307 million and average USDC held in Coinbase products of $22 billion.

FOR EXPENSES CFO Alesia Haas said Coinbase is lowering and narrowing its 2026 adjusted expense guidance to $4.15 billion to $4.3 billion.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Embedding Business Model.

The framework puts it in one line: “Your product stops being the thing companies buy and becomes the thing other systems assume exists.”

As we read it, Coinbase’s pitch of crypto as “the native execution rail for the agent-led economy” is a bid for that embedded position. The framework was published by The Business Engineer and does not discuss Coinbase.

What Is Not Established

The $3 trillion to $5 trillion figure is a forecast the letter credits to McKinsey, not a Coinbase result. The letter’s revenue tables have no separate line for agent payments, and its developer-platform volume figure excludes x402.
