Business Pill · Agentic Commerce
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on agentic commerce: what changes when the shopper is an AI agent. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Grok Bot or Shop Pay.
The key insight: By our count, 8 of the 13 items listed as New in Grok Bot 0.78.1 concern shopping, orders, payments or subscriptions, against 3 of 18 in v0.77.0 and 2 of 24 in v0.75.2.
What the Changelog Lists
The 0.78.1 entry, titled “Shopping cards and subscription templates”, says shopping with a Bot “shows products as cards with photos, rating, price, and store”, and that three or four results scroll in a carousel.
On a product page, the changelog says, “in-stock options come first” and “Buy now starts an order you approve”. After an order is placed, “the Bot tracks it and tells you when it ships or arrives”.
For payments, the entry says users can “Connect Shop Pay in the Vault’s Payments tab, then pick it in Pay with or make it the payment method Bots use first”.

What Was Posted on X
Eric Zakariasson on X, 28 Oct: “grok @bot 0.78.1 is now stable and rolling out!”, listing shopping results as product cards, new subscription templates and connecting Shop Pay in the Vault.
Subscriptions Become a Template
The same release adds templates. “The Try it, don’t pay for it template starts a free trial for you and cancels it, or reminds you, before it bills”, the changelog says, and “The Find unused subscriptions template cancels plans you pick from the ones you still pay for”.
It also says Bots “can cancel a subscription or look up its price and renewal date, and confirm with you before changing anything”.
Three Payment Releases in Six Days
The payment pieces arrived in steps. Version 0.75.2 on 22 October says “Bots can pay with Shop Pay, through Shop checkout where a store accepts it and with a one-time Shop card elsewhere”. Version 0.77.0 on 26 October added a Vault “Payments tab where you pick the payment method Bots use first, and you still approve every purchase”, plus Order Concierge and Deal Watcher templates that work “never buying without your OK”.
By our count, that is 13 shopping, order, payment or subscription items across the three releases, 8 of them in the latest. Our earlier piece on Shop’s skill for ChatGPT and Claude covered the same payment rail reaching other assistants.
The Structural Read
As we read the changelog, the release moves the Bot from paying at checkout to the steps before and after it: finding a product, showing it as a card, starting the order and tracking delivery.
As we read it, every buying step the changelog describes keeps a human approval: Buy now starts an order you approve, and the Payments tab note says you still approve every purchase.
As we read the subscription templates, the Bot is also pointed at stopping spending, with templates that cancel free trials before they bill and cancel plans you pick.

Three Implications
FOR SHOP PAY Shop Pay now appears in Grok Bot both as a checkout route, per the 22 October release, and as a saved payment method in the Vault, per the 27 October release.
FOR ASSISTANTS THAT SHOP Our earlier coverage showed Shop’s skill letting ChatGPT and Claude buy with Shop Pay; the changelog shows Grok Bot adding the same payment option inside its own Vault.
FOR WHAT TO WATCH The changelog gives no usage, order or merchant figures, so the first disclosure of orders placed through Bots would be the first measure of uptake.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Embedding Business Model.
The framework puts it in one line: “Your product stops being the thing companies buy and becomes the thing other systems assume exists.”
As we read it, a payment method saved inside an agent’s Vault fits the embedding side of that line. The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss Grok Bot or Shop Pay.

What Is Not Established
The changelog does not give usage, order volumes, merchant counts or any fee terms with Shop. It describes features and approval steps, not how many people use them. This piece rests on xAI’s changelog for Grok Bot, read on 29 October 2026, and Zakariasson’s post. The counts of commerce items per release are our classification and arithmetic.
The Bottom Line
Grok Bot 0.78.1 adds product cards, a Buy now step that the user approves, order tracking, subscription templates and a Shop Pay connection in the Vault, according to xAI’s changelog. By our count, 8 of its 13 new items concern shopping, orders, payments or subscriptions, the third release in six days to add payment features.
