Google Search Revenue Growth Slows to 12% as Queries Climb

Alphabet said on 28 October 2026 that revenue from Google Search & other rose 12% to $63.4 billion in the third quarter, and that its year-over-year Search query growth rate was the highest it has been in the last five years.

By our arithmetic from Alphabet’s own releases, the 12% is the slowest year-over-year growth for the line since April to June 2025, and down from 19.1% in January to March 2026.

Business Pill · Distribution Advantage

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Google Search revenue.

The key insight: By our arithmetic from Alphabet’s releases, Google Search & other supplied 26.9% of the company’s added revenue in the third quarter, against 51.0% a year earlier, while Google Cloud supplied 61.6%.

Two Numbers From One Release

Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google and Alphabet, said in the release: “Our AI investments are driving overall Search query growth, including commercial queries. In fact, our year-over-year query growth rate is the highest it’s been in the last five years.”

The release puts Google Search & other revenue at $63.35 billion for the quarter, against $56.57 billion a year earlier. The earnings slides list the same 12% next to the line “Fastest growth in Search queries in 5 years”.

Neither document gives a query count, a paid-click figure or a cost-per-click figure, so the two numbers cannot be combined into revenue per query.

Growth by Quarter

Alphabet’s supplemental tables give the year-over-year growth of Google Search & other, by our arithmetic, as 9.8% in January to March 2025, 11.7% in April to June, 14.5% in July to September and 16.7% in October to December.

In 2026 the same arithmetic gives 19.1% for January to March, 16.8% for April to June and 12.0% for July to September.

Quarter on quarter, the line moved from $63.27 billion in April to June 2026 to $63.35 billion, a rise of 0.1% by our arithmetic. A year earlier, it rose 4.4% between the same two quarters.

Where Alphabet’s Growth Came From

Alphabet’s total revenue rose by $25.2 billion year over year, to $127.6 billion. By our arithmetic, Google Search & other supplied $6.8 billion of that increase, or 26.9%, and Google Cloud supplied $15.6 billion, or 61.6%.

In the third quarter of 2025, Search & other supplied $7.2 billion of a $14.1 billion increase, or 51.0%, and Cloud supplied 27.0%, according to the same arithmetic on that quarter’s release.

Ads and Traffic Costs

The release lists Google advertising revenue of $82.0 billion, against $74.2 billion a year earlier, and total traffic acquisition costs of $16.4 billion, against $14.9 billion.

By our arithmetic, traffic acquisition costs equalled 20.0% of Google advertising revenue in the quarter, against 20.1% a year earlier.

How the Market Read It

FirstSquawk posted on X that Google Services revenue of $96.30 billion and Search & other revenue of $63.35 billion “both came in below estimates”. It did not give the estimates.

Bloomberg posted that Alphabet shares tumbled after Google’s parent company reported sales and profit that fell short of expectations.

What Google Has Said About AI Mode

In remarks for the April to June 2026 call, published on Google’s blog on 22 July, Pichai said AI Mode had surpassed 1 billion monthly active users since it expanded globally the previous October, and that “AI Mode is driving an incremental increase in Search queries overall”.

In remarks for the July to September 2025 call, he said overall queries and commercial queries had continued to grow year over year, and that the growth rate increased that quarter, “largely driven by our AI investments in Search, most notably AI Overviews and AI Mode”.

Connecting the Coverage

Our earnings piece covers the full report: Google Cloud revenue doubled to $30.7 billion as capex hit $51.4 billion. Usage is covered in Google’s API nears 46 trillion tokens a day, and the models in Gemini 4 Carbon leads an AI index at 59.

The Structural Read

As we read the release, the two Search numbers move in opposite directions: Alphabet describes its query growth rate as the highest in five years, while revenue growth on the line fell to 12% from 19.1% in January to March, by our arithmetic.

The release gives no figure that links the two, such as revenue per query, paid clicks or cost per click, so the gap can be measured but not explained from these documents.

In dollar terms, Search & other still added $6.8 billion year over year, by our arithmetic, against $7.2 billion in the same quarter of 2025.

Three Implications

FOR SEARCH REVENUE By our arithmetic, the line grew 0.1% quarter on quarter, against 4.4% between the same two quarters of 2025.

FOR THE GROWTH MIX Google Cloud supplied $15.6 billion of Alphabet’s $25.2 billion year-over-year increase, by our arithmetic, against $3.8 billion a year earlier.

FOR ADVERTISERS AND PARTNERS Traffic acquisition costs were 20.0% of Google advertising revenue, by our arithmetic, against 20.1% a year earlier, according to the release figures.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.

The framework lists, under its medium cycle of 10 to 20 years: “industry restructuring, business-model evolution, the end of incumbent dominance in software and search.”

Alphabet’s third-quarter release does not settle that question for Google: query growth is at a five-year high by the company’s account, while Search revenue growth slowed to 12%. The framework was published in June 2026 and does not discuss these figures.

What Is Not Established

The release does not say whether AI answers earn more or less advertising revenue per query than traditional results, and it gives no paid-click or pricing data. These figures do not show whether AI features are adding to or taking from Search revenue; the question stays open.

FirstSquawk did not state the consensus figure it compared against, and this piece does not use one.

What happened next: in his published call remarks, Sundar Pichai said Google is focused on the Search user experience “followed by monetization”; Search & other rose $79 million from the prior quarter, by our arithmetic. On the call, Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, named foreign exchange as “the single largest driver of search deceleration relative to Q2” and said “the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode.” Read the follow-up.
