Neoclouds Move Into Software as IREN Closes $625M Mirantis

IREN completed its acquisition of the cloud-software company Mirantis on 4 August, for about 12.6 million IREN shares plus about $40 million of cash and other consideration, according to IREN’s filing. The deal was valued at about $625 million when it was announced in May, Data Center Knowledge reported.

The deal is the last of seven moves in a timeline graphic titled “Bare-Metal Clouds Are Moving Into Software”, which tracks GPU cloud providers adding software from March 2025 to May 2026. By our arithmetic, the $625 million value equals about 17% of the $3.65 billion facility IREN raised in June.

Business Pill · Financial Conditions

A one-minute explainer of financial conditions: how the cost and availability of credit move across markets. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about the companies in this piece.

The key insight: IREN says its Mirantis deal, valued at about $625 million at announcement according to Data Center Knowledge, has already facilitated several of its announced and prospective AI Cloud contracts; it is the last of seven GPU-cloud moves into software on the timeline.

Seven Moves in 15 Months

The graphic, whose author we could not identify, marks each move as built, bought or merged. Its footer reads “Sources: company press releases and blog posts, Mar 2025 to Oct 2026”.

By its dates, Crusoe launched managed AI services in March 2025 and managed Slurm in March 2026; Nscale launched serverless inference in April 2025; and Voltage Park launched managed Kubernetes in June 2025. The graphic says the Nscale date comes from a third-party product listing.

It also lists two deals. CoreWeave bought Weights & Biases in May 2025, which the graphic prices at about $1.7 billion; CoreWeave’s own release announcing the completed deal on 5 May 2025 does not state a price. And Voltage Park merged with Lightning AI; Latham & Watkins said on 21 January 2026 that “Lightning AI, a cloud platform where developers and companies build and run AI applications” had completed the merger.

What IREN Says It Bought

IREN’s release says the acquisition “deepens IREN’s capabilities across AI workload orchestration, monitoring and customer support” and “has already facilitated several of IREN’s announced and prospective AI Cloud contracts”. Mirantis has “a track record of serving more than 1,500 enterprise customers globally”, the release says.

Co-CEO Daniel Roberts put the plan this way: “own the land and power, build the data centers, deliver the compute. Mirantis adds the software layer on top, turning infrastructure into a platform”.

The Business Lever: From Rented GPUs to a Platform

Our earlier reporting shows how these companies borrow. In our GPU debt piece, IREN’s June facility, “Anchored by Microsoft’s offtake”, cost a blended 6.00%, while its August GPU financing at Mackenzie carries a fixed 9.0%. CoreWeave’s March loan, secured by a customer contract that Bloomberg reported was Meta’s, has a tranche at about 5.9%, against 9.625% on its unsecured notes.

As we read it, a contract with a large customer lowers these companies’ borrowing costs, and software that helps win contracts can matter as much as the GPUs. Analysts quoted in our CoreWeave funding-gap piece put CoreWeave’s remaining new-debt need at about $19.5 billion to $23 billion (Goldman Sachs), while Bernstein estimates about $76 billion to finance with outside capital.

On hardware, a SemiAnalysis preview we covered in our Rubin benchmark piece puts Nvidia’s Rubin NVL72 at 9.11 to 20.9 times GB300 NVL72’s performance per total cost of ownership, depending on speed.

The Structural Read

As we read the timeline, four of the seven moves are services the companies built themselves, two are acquisitions and one is a merger.

By our arithmetic, the $625 million announcement value equals about 17% of IREN’s $3.65 billion June facility, which IREN said was anchored by Microsoft’s offtake.

As we read IREN’s release, the company describes its model as owning land, power, data centres and compute, with Mirantis as the software layer on top.

“Mirantis adds the software layer on top, turning infrastructure into a platform.”

Three Implications

FOR GPU CLOUD CUSTOMERS The timeline lists managed Kubernetes, managed Slurm, serverless inference and managed AI services among the offerings these providers now sell.

FOR LENDERS Our earlier reporting found contract-backed tranches at about 5.9% to 6.00% against unsecured or uncontracted debt at 9.0% to 9.625% for CoreWeave and IREN.

FOR IREN IREN’s release says Mirantis has served more than 1,500 enterprise customers globally.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.

The framework says: “The $1T capex cycle is being underwritten by a $1T concentrated demand commitment from two counterparties whose combined free cash flow is deeply negative.”

As we read it, GPU cloud providers adding software sit downstream of that cycle, selling managed services on the capacity it pays for. The framework does not discuss these companies.

What Is Not Established

We could not identify who made the timeline graphic. We confirmed the IREN, CoreWeave and Voltage Park deals and the existence of Crusoe’s managed Slurm service from primary or legal-adviser sources; the March 2025 and March 2026 Crusoe, April 2025 Nscale and June 2025 Voltage Park launch dates are as the graphic gives them; Crusoe’s documentation gives no launch date for managed Slurm. The Weights & Biases price is the graphic’s figure, not CoreWeave’s. The 17% ratio is our arithmetic, and the link between software and borrowing costs is our reading.

The Bottom Line

IREN closed its Mirantis acquisition on 4 August for about 12.6 million shares plus about $40 million, a deal valued at about $625 million when announced in May and the latest of seven GPU-cloud moves into software from March 2025 to May 2026. IREN says Mirantis has already facilitated several of its announced and prospective AI Cloud contracts.

IREN’s closing terms come from its 8-K press release, and the $625 million announcement value from Data Center Knowledge’s May report; the timeline comes from a graphic whose author we could not identify, redrawn rather than republished, with its dates and the Weights & Biases price attributed to it.
