Neocloud Stocks Recover From Musk Warning as Bonds Hit Lows

Shares of neocloud companies declined in premarket trading on Monday, 26 October 2026, after Elon Musk said the sector could face consolidation and failures, Reuters reported. By 16:22 UTC the same stocks were trading above Friday’s close: CoreWeave was up 5.0%, IREN 5.3% and Nebius 2.4%, according to Yahoo Finance prices, by our arithmetic.

Reuters reported a different picture in the debt market earlier that day: bonds of Nebius maturing in 2034 and those of CoreWeave expiring in 2033 have hit record lows on the concerns, and that shares of CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN have fallen more than 30% this month alone.

A one-minute explainer on free cash flow. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this piece.

The key insight: As we read it, the stock market and the debt market gave two different readings on the same day: Reuters reported neocloud shares fell before the open after Musk’s post and that Nebius and CoreWeave bonds have hit record lows, while Yahoo Finance prices show the shares above Friday’s close by 16:22 UTC, by our arithmetic.

What Musk Said

In a post on X on 25 October, Musk wrote that debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. He added that SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but that “we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue.”

“That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many,” Musk wrote. Reuters reported that he also said SpaceX would not buy any neocloud companies. CoreWeave and Nebius were not immediately available for comment, according to Reuters.

What Was Posted on X

Elon Musk posted this on 25 October. It is the post Reuters cited for Monday’s premarket declines in neocloud shares.

Reuters shared its report on X on 26 October. The report describes the premarket declines and the record-low bonds quoted in this piece.

How the Stocks Moved on Monday

Reuters reported premarket declines of 4.5% for CoreWeave, 3.4% for Nebius and 3.3% for IREN, with Applied Digital and TeraWulf down more than 2% each and Core Scientific down 1.7%. After the open, the lows came early: CoreWeave touched $51.24 at 13:30 UTC, 5.5% below its Friday close of $54.24, according to Yahoo Finance data, by our arithmetic.

By 16:22 UTC, CoreWeave traded at $56.95. TeraWulf was up 7.6% on Friday’s close, Core Scientific 5.7% and Applied Digital 1.3%, by our arithmetic from Yahoo Finance prices. The rebound came after a steep fall: CoreWeave closed at $77.81 on 13 October and $54.24 on 23 October, a 30.3% decline by our arithmetic.

What the Debt Market Shows

On 20 October, Reuters reported that the yield on CoreWeave’s notes due 2031 touched almost 16% the previous week, while the cost of insuring against the company’s debt rose to around 1,000 basis points. CoreWeave has about $50 billion in debt, Reuters reported, and J.P. Morgan said it expects the company’s free cash flow to remain negative until 2030.

Short sellers have profited from the fall. Investors betting against US neocloud and data center companies had made $6 billion in paper profits so far in October, Reuters reported on 22 October, citing ORTEX data: $2.94 billion on Nebius, close to $1.7 billion on CoreWeave, more than $1.2 billion on IREN and Applied Digital combined, and $115 million on Core Scientific.

“There is too much debt,” Alberto Gallo, founder of hedge fund Andromeda Capital, told Reuters. Reuters also reported that research firm Gartner said earlier this month that CoreWeave was at the top of the 100-odd neoclouds most exposed to increasing leverage, and that 80% of the companies could cease independent operations by 2032.

Connecting the Coverage

We covered the October drawdown and the lenders’ pullback in our Nebius piece, and Musk’s view of stranded compute alongside rising H100 rents in our stranded compute piece. The debt side of the build-out runs through our piece on leases not yet on the books and our coverage of Meta’s stock sales.

The Structural Read

As we read it, Musk drew the line at revenue: he wrote that debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers, and set SpaceX’s investment-grade status apart.

As we read it, the bet against the group is large: Reuters reported on 22 October, citing ORTEX, that about $17 billion of stock across five of these companies was sold short.

As we read it, one session does not reverse a month: by our arithmetic from Yahoo Finance prices, CoreWeave at 16:22 UTC was still 26.8% below its 13 October close.

Three Implications

FOR THE EQUITY Neocloud shares traded above Friday’s close by 16:22 UTC on Monday, by our arithmetic from Yahoo Finance prices, after premarket declines Reuters reported.

FOR THE BONDS Reuters reported that Nebius bonds due 2034 and CoreWeave bonds due 2033 have hit record lows, and on 20 October that CoreWeave’s 2031 notes yielded almost 16% the previous week.

FOR THE LENDERS J.P. Morgan said bank exposures to CoreWeave are well managed and very well secured, and that it expects CoreWeave’s free cash flow to remain negative until 2030, according to Reuters.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.

The framework puts it this way: “It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing.”

As we read it, the neoclouds are one part of that financing; Reuters reported that Gartner put CoreWeave at the top of the 100-odd neoclouds most exposed to increasing leverage. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss Musk’s post or Monday’s trading.

What Is Not Established

Reuters did not give bond prices or yields for the Nebius 2034 or CoreWeave 2033 bonds, or the date each hit its low. The 16% yield and 1,000 basis point figures date from the week before 20 October and may have changed since. Monday’s stock prices were intraday and still moving. We read the Reuters reports of 20, 22 and 26 October in full, Musk’s X post and Yahoo Finance price data, and did not contact the companies.
