Amazon Web Services, OpenAI and Anthropic are spending heavily on forward deployed engineers, the specialists who embed with customers to put AI into production, CNBC reported on 15 October 2026. CNBC lists AWS’s $1 billion forward-deployed engineering initiative, an OpenAI deployment business backed by more than $4 billion in initial investment, and Anthropic’s $100 million program to train 10,000 such engineers by the end of 2027.
U.S. job postings for the role rose from fewer than 200 in 2023 to more than 7,300 in the first nine months of 2026, according to Lightcast data cited by CNBC.
Business Pill · FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEERS
A one-minute explainer of what a forward deployed engineer does. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any organisation in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, the spending is going to the people who put models to work rather than to the models themselves: AWS, OpenAI and Anthropic each attach their figure to engineers who embed with customers, and CNBC ties the push to investor pressure for business results.
What Each Company Has Committed
AWS announced a dedicated AWS Forward Deployed Engineering organization on 30 June 2026, “backed by a $1 billion investment,” according to its own post. CNBC says AWS is starting with hundreds of engineers, citing Asa Kalavade, AWS’s vice president of forward-deployed engineering.
“We are investing $1 billion now because customers need this hands-on help turning their AI investments into results at speed,” Kalavade told CNBC.
OpenAI’s announcement says the OpenAI Deployment Company “will launch with more than $4 billion of initial investment,” and that it is majority-owned and controlled by OpenAI. It describes a committed partnership with 19 investment firms, consultancies and system integrators, led by TPG.
OpenAI also agreed to acquire Tomoro, an applied AI consulting and engineering firm, which its page says will bring approximately 150 experienced Forward Deployed Engineers and Deployment Specialists from day one.
Anthropic launched Claude Frontier Academy on 2 October 2026. Its post says the Academy is “backed by a $100 million commitment” and aims to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers, Anthropic’s own term, by the end of 2027.
CNBC also reports that Accenture and Google Cloud are building a 1,000-person forward-deployed engineering workforce.

What Was Posted on X
CNBC shared its 15 October 2026 report on X: ‘AWS, Anthropic race to deploy army of specialized engineers key to proving AI spending will pay off’. It is the article this piece is built on, alongside the companies’ own announcements.
How the Three Approaches Differ
AWS says its FDEs embed directly inside customer teams and that deployments are designed so customers are self-sufficient when they end, according to its June post.
OpenAI’s page describes the Deployment Company as a standalone business unit that will use its funding to scale operations and acquire firms.
Anthropic is training engineers already employed by its customers and partners, CNBC reports. Its first cohorts include engineers from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk, according to Anthropic’s post.
“The AI skills gap affects every customer and every partner, so it is a market problem, and Anthropic is committed to helping close it,” Steve Corfield, Anthropic’s global head of business development and partnerships, told CNBC.
What the Hiring Data Shows
Lightcast counted about 1,200 FDE postings in 2025 on the way to the 7,300-plus in the first nine months of 2026, CNBC reports. Median advertised salaries reached $195,456, up 40% from 2023 and more than three times the median across all U.S. job postings, CNBC says.
Consulting firms are among the biggest recruiters. Lightcast counted 872 unique FDE postings from Deloitte, 688 from Accenture, 499 from Google and 447 from KPMG in the first nine months of 2026, according to CNBC, which notes the figures are advertised positions, not completed hires.
Lightcast’s own 15 September blog, written earlier, gave about 200 postings in 2024, around 1,200 in 2025 and more than 5,200 in the first seven months of 2026.
“FDE is not an entirely new role. It shares roughly half of its skills with software engineering, creating an opportunity to tap into a much broader talent pool,” Elena Magrini, Lightcast’s head of global research, told CNBC.
Why It Lands This Week
CNBC frames the hiring push against market concerns about AI economics, after a week of losses in AI- and memory-linked stocks including CoreWeave, Dell, AMD and Micron.
“The Street is starting to become impatient with these billions of companies who are spending on AI without getting any business outcomes,” Jeff Christian, founder of executive search firm Christian & Timbers, told CNBC.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the three companies are buying the same capability three ways: AWS builds an in-house FDE organisation, OpenAI’s page describes a majority-owned company that will acquire firms, and Anthropic trains engineers who stay at its customers and partners.
As we read it, the employer counts show where the demand sits: Lightcast’s top posters of FDE roles, as reported by CNBC, are Deloitte, Accenture, Google and KPMG, three of them consulting firms.
As we read it, the proof is still missing: CNBC writes that case studies show productivity gains rather than independently verified returns, and Corfield says it is too early for outcome data.

Three Implications
ENTERPRISE BUYERS CNBC reports that AWS says its FDEs work alongside customer teams so customers can eventually maintain and expand the systems themselves.
ENGINEERS Median advertised salaries for the role reached $195,456, up 40% from 2023, according to Lightcast data cited by CNBC.
CONSULTING FIRMS Deloitte, Accenture and KPMG are among the top four posters of FDE roles in Lightcast’s count, and Accenture and Google Cloud are building a 1,000-person FDE workforce, CNBC reports.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Product Overhang Doctrine.
The framework separates what the underlying technology can do from what users can actually do with it: “They are not the same curve, and the gap between them โ what the platform makes possible versus what the product surfaces โ has a name.” It calls that gap overhang.
As we read it, forward deployed engineers are a staffing answer to that gap, paid for by the model makers and cloud providers themselves. The framework does not discuss these programs.

What Is Not Established
CNBC writes that the evidence from FDE projects so far falls short of confirming a return on AI investment, and that company-reported case studies show productivity gains, not independently verified financial returns.
Corfield told CNBC it is still too early for outcome data from Anthropic’s program, and the first full credentials are expected in early 2027. OpenAI’s page does not say how much of the more than $4 billion comes from OpenAI itself.
“There is no compression algorithm for experience,” Val Henderson, chief executive of AWS consulting partner Caylent, told CNBC.
The Bottom Line
CNBC’s tally puts AWS’s $1 billion, OpenAI’s more-than-$4 billion Deployment Company and Anthropic’s $100 million academy side by side, with U.S. postings for the role above 7,300 in nine months of 2026, per Lightcast.
Added together, the three commitments come to more than $5.1 billion, by our arithmetic on the companies’ own figures; the OpenAI amount is the Deployment Company’s initial investment, not OpenAI’s alone.

A note on sourcing. We read CNBC’s 15 October 2026 article in full, along with the companies’ own announcements: AWS’s 30 June post, OpenAI’s Deployment Company page and Anthropic’s 2 October Claude Frontier Academy post, plus Lightcast’s 15 September blog. The commitment figures come from the companies’ own texts; the 2023-2026 posting counts, salaries and employer counts are Lightcast data as reported by CNBC; quotes from Kalavade, Corfield, Magrini, Christian and Henderson are as reported by CNBC. The $5.1 billion total is our arithmetic.
