Anthropic told investors on 14 October 2026 that its third-quarter revenue rose to $16.8 billion, the Financial Times’ Amelia Pollard and George Hammond reported, according to Reuters’ and Yahoo Finance’s accounts of the FT story; Yahoo Finance says the FT put second-quarter revenue at $11.5 billion and the company at “profitable on an adjusted basis”. Per the FT, the AI start-up gathered investors for presentations in San Francisco on Wednesday ahead of its anticipated public listing.
Reuters, citing an investor who attended a pre-IPO meeting with Anthropic leadership in San Francisco that day, reported that third-quarter revenue rose 45% from $11.6 billion in the second quarter, and that Anthropic told the group it was profitable on an adjusted basis in the third quarter.
Business Pill · RUN-RATE REVENUE
A one-minute explainer of run-rate revenue: what an AI company’s headline number does and does not mean. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any organisation in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, the pitch to IPO investors now rests on reported quarters rather than run-rate claims: on Reuters’ figures, $4.7 billion, $11.6 billion and $16.8 billion, three quarters that add up to about seven times all of 2025’s revenue.
Update, 15 Oct 2026, 14:27 UTC: which margins are adjusted
Bloomberg’s Ed Ludlow posted, citing a source, that the 85% gross margin Anthropic presented to investors on Wednesday is on a GAAP basis, not adjusted, and that the positive operating margin of 11% as of the third quarter is on an adjusted basis. His earlier post, citing Bloomberg’s reporting, had listed the 85% as an adjusted gross margin.
That answers the question this piece left open below about the basis of the 11% figure, on Ludlow’s source’s account. Like the rest of the figures here, it comes from reports of the investor meeting rather than from an Anthropic release.
What Anthropic Told Investors
Reuters reported quarterly figures for all of 2026 so far, citing the same investor: revenue of $4.7 billion in the first quarter, $11.6 billion in the second and $16.8 billion in the third.
Reuters described the session as an investor day “meant to familiarize prospective Anthropic investors before its highly anticipated IPO”. It said Anthropic “did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment”.
Yahoo Finance, reporting the FT story, said Anthropic revealed the figures to investors during a closed meeting.
The FT also reported, in the caption to its article, that the company has warned investors its technology could pose “existential risks to humanity”.

What Was Posted on X
Developer and writer Simon Willison quoted the FT’s line that distillation was 5% to 7% of revenue and, applying it to the $11.5 billion second-quarter figure, wrote that if true it would mean “more than half a billion dollars spent by other labs to distill Anthropic’s models” (15 October 2026). The dollar figure is his own arithmetic on the reported share, and the FT’s line is itself what Anthropic told investors, as covered in the update above; the piece does not adopt his reading of who the buyers are.
Analyst Tae Kim (@firstadopter) replied on 15 October 2026 to a user who predicted that October numbers in a November S-1 would show ‘a big ramp in growth for anthropic’, writing that he agreed and that it is ‘all about product product product’, citing Opus 5.5 and Anthropic’s latest models. Both are opinions about figures that have not been published; the piece reports only the revenue Anthropic itself told investors.
Investor Gavin Baker wrote on 15 October 2026 that the market will ‘probably never get another ARR number from Anthropic’, which he called healthy, and argued that hyperscaler growth rates are a better gauge of AI demand. He also wrote that Anthropic was free-cash-flow positive in Q3 and reaccelerating in October ‘per third party data’, citing public reporting. These are his readings; the piece reports only what Anthropic told investors as relayed by the outlets it names.
Two Reports, Two Second-Quarter Figures
The two reports agree on the third quarter, $16.8 billion, and differ by $0.1 billion on the second: $11.5 billion in the FT’s account, as Yahoo Finance reported it, and $11.6 billion in Reuters’.
Our arithmetic: $16.8 billion is 46.1% above $11.5 billion and 44.8% above $11.6 billion. The FT’s web page title, as we read it on 15 October, is “Anthropic tells investors quarterly revenue up nearly 50% to $16.8bn ahead of IPO”; a version of the article shared with us is headlined “Anthropic revenue jumps to $16.8bn in third quarter”. We could not read the article beneath them.
Both reports describe the figures as quarterly revenue, not an annualised run rate.
The Run So Far This Year
Our arithmetic on Reuters’ figures: the first three quarters of 2026 add up to $33.1 billion, and third-quarter revenue is about 3.6 times the first quarter’s $4.7 billion.
Reuters also reported that Anthropic’s revenue last year rose twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion, while the company lost more than $8 billion on an operating basis, excluding writedowns of various liabilities mostly tied to previous fundraising.
On those figures, the first nine months of 2026 brought in about seven times the revenue of all of 2025, by our arithmetic.
Where This Leaves the IPO
Reuters said Anthropic is targeting a valuation of over $2 trillion and that its listing is expected to precede one by OpenAI. It said Anthropic’s public-market debut is likely to be pushed until after the November US midterm elections.
Yahoo Finance said Anthropic privately filed its registration paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission on 1 June.
We reported on 13 October that Anthropic would share its first third-quarter financials with prospective IPO investors; that piece also carries Chamath Palihapitiya’s view that the company should find a market-clearing price and list as soon as possible.
Update, 15 October: Distillation’s Share of Revenue
The Information reported, per its summary on Techmeme, that Anthropic told investors that distillation accounts for 5% to 7% of revenue, citing sources. The Information’s own headline reads “Anthropic’s Rapid But Slowing Growth Could Weigh on IPO Valuation”. We could read only that headline and the summary, not the article, so we cannot say how The Information defines distillation revenue or how the share was measured.
Citing early evidence, Anthropic said on 12 October that new defenses had cut the data harvested by distillers from Claude by around 90 to 99 percent; it also said it had turned away “meaningful revenue and trillions of tokens’ worth of paying traffic” from distillers without giving an amount, as we reported. Neither text we read says whether the 5% to 7% describes that same traffic.
On the “slowing growth” point, the quarterly figures above show revenue rising about 2.5 times from the first quarter to the second and about 1.45 times from the second to the third, by our arithmetic.
Update, 15 October: The Unit Economics
The Financial Times reported, according to a BeInCrypto summary syndicated on Yahoo Finance, that Anthropic told investors it earned $1.70 in revenue for every $1 it spent on computing power in the third quarter. By our arithmetic, that puts compute spending at about 59% of revenue (1 ÷ 1.70 ≈ 58.8%).
The same summary says executives put operating margins at 11% and said Anthropic was cash flow positive, alongside a second straight adjusted profit. The text we read does not say whether the 11% figure is on an adjusted basis. It also says Dario Amodei and Krishna Rao, the chief executive and chief financial officer, highlighted margins and profitability at the investor event but warned those figures could change as Anthropic invests heavily in compute and biomedical research.
For contrast, the summary gives 2025 figures: $7.33 billion spent on compute against about $4.6 billion in revenue, which it puts at roughly $0.63 in revenue for every $1 of compute, and an operating loss of more than $8 billion excluding write-downs. It adds that Anthropic has committed at least $518 billion over a decade to cloud services, computing and infrastructure, and attributes the 5% to 7% distillation share to four people who spoke to the FT. It puts first-quarter revenue at about $4.8 billion, against the $4.7 billion in Reuters’ account above.
We could not read the FT article itself; these figures rest on that summary of it.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the number that matters for pricing is the third quarter’s growth on a much larger base: the step from $11.6 billion to $16.8 billion added $5.2 billion in one quarter, by our arithmetic on Reuters’ figures.
As we read it, “adjusted” carries the weight: neither report says what the adjustment excludes, and Reuters says the company lost more than $8 billion on an operating basis last year.
As we read it, the figures arrive in the middle of the price debate we covered on 13 and 14 October: Anthropic is targeting over $2 trillion, per Reuters, while Chamath Palihapitiya argued it should find a market-clearing price and list.
Reuters, citing an investor who attended the 14 October meeting
“The company was profitable on an adjusted basis in the third quarter, Anthropic told the group, the source said.”
Three Implications
ANTHROPIC It told investors third-quarter revenue was $16.8 billion, per the FT and Reuters, and that it was profitable on an adjusted basis.
IPO BUYERS They now have three reported quarters, $4.7 billion, $11.6 billion and $16.8 billion per Reuters, but not the definition of adjusted profit.
CLOUD SUPPLIERS The Business Engineer’s AI Capex Map counts Anthropic as one of two startups behind half of the largest U.S. cloud providers’ revenue backlog.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.
The framework puts it this way: “Taken together with prior disclosures, the picture was clarified: the four largest U.S. cloud providers now hold roughly $2.1 trillion in revenue backlog, and half of that — $1.05 trillion — comes from two cash-burning AI startups, OpenAI and Anthropic.”
As we read it, a $16.8 billion quarter is the first reported test of whether that backlog is backed by revenue: the cloud providers’ order books depend on Anthropic’s sales growing into its commitments.

What Is Not Established
Anthropic has not published these figures, and neither report says how “adjusted” profitability is defined or what it excludes.
The figures come from people at or briefed on a private meeting: Reuters cites one attendee, and we could not read the FT’s article beyond its headline, standfirst, byline and photo caption. The $0.1 billion gap on the second quarter is not explained.
The Bottom Line
Anthropic told prospective IPO investors that third-quarter revenue was $16.8 billion and that it was profitable on an adjusted basis, according to the FT and Reuters, up 44.8% to 46.1% from the second quarter depending on which report’s figure is used.

A note on sourcing. The Financial Times first reported on 14 October 2026 that Anthropic told investors its third-quarter revenue was $16.8 billion; we could read only its headline, standfirst, byline and photo caption, seen in a screenshot of the article shared with us, and not its body, so its figures here come from Reuters’ and Yahoo Finance’s accounts of its story. Reuters reported the quarterly figures separately, citing an investor who attended the meeting; we read Reuters’ text in Channel NewsAsia’s syndication. Anthropic has not published the figures and had not responded to Reuters when it reported. The Information’s distillation figure comes from its summary on Techmeme; beyond that we could read only its headline, not its article. The unit-economics figures come from a BeInCrypto summary of the FT’s report, syndicated on Yahoo Finance and read in full. The growth rates, totals and the compute share of revenue are our arithmetic.
