Apple closed at $342.96 on 14 October 2026, up 0.50%, and Nasdaq lists its market capitalisation at that close as $5,005,219,972,800, just over $5 trillion. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Apple had closed above a $5 trillion valuation for the first time; we checked the figure against Nasdaq’s data and Apple’s own filings.
It happened in the same session in which, on Nasdaq’s closing data, CoreWeave lost 15.46%, Dell 11.36%, Nebius 10.08% and Oracle 8.82%, and Nvidia fell 3.16%.
Business Pill · CAPEX AND DEPRECIATION
A one-minute explainer of capex and depreciation: why the useful life of chips drives AI profits. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any organisation in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, the milestone landed on a day the market drew a line between AI layers: Apple, which sells devices and software, closed up 0.50%, while the companies that rent out or finance AI compute, CoreWeave, Nebius and Oracle, fell between 8.82% and 15.46%.
How the $5 Trillion Is Counted
Apple’s 10-Q for the quarter ended 27 June 2026, filed on 31 July, says 14,594,180,000 shares of common stock were outstanding as of 17 July 2026.
Our arithmetic: $342.96 times 14,594,180,000 shares is $5,005,219,972,800, the same figure Nasdaq lists. At the previous day’s close of $341.27, the same share count gives about $4.981 trillion.

Why We Call It a First
On Nasdaq’s historical data, Apple’s highest close from 1 October 2025 to 13 October 2026 was $341.27, on 13 October; multiplied by the share count Apple had reported at each date, no close in that span reaches $5 trillion.
From 29 December 2017 to 30 September 2025, the highest close on the same series was $259.02, on 26 December 2024. Even multiplied by the largest share count in Apple’s filings, 17,001,802,000, that comes to about $4.40 trillion, below $5 trillion.
So, by our arithmetic on Nasdaq’s prices and Apple’s share counts, 14 October 2026 is Apple’s first close above $5 trillion.
Where the Others Closed
Nasdaq’s quote pages list Nvidia’s market capitalisation at $5.333 trillion after a 3.16% fall to $221.30. They list Alphabet at $4.252 trillion, down 1.74%, and Microsoft at $3.963 trillion, down 1.80%.
On those figures Nvidia and Apple were the two of the four companies above $5 trillion at the close.
The Same Session for AI Infrastructure
We covered the AI infrastructure selloff earlier on 14 October: CoreWeave closed down 15.46% at $65.78 on the day the yield on its 2032 notes neared 15%, and its Q2 10-Q shows net interest expense of $640 million against a $626 million net loss.
That piece also carries the September consumer price index, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics said rose 3.7% over 12 months.
Apple had its own news in court the same day: at the hearing in Apple v. OpenAI, the judge said he was highly likely to grant Apple a preliminary injunction, according to Bloomberg Law; no order had been entered.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the $5 trillion mark is the arithmetic of a small daily move on a very large base: Apple rose $1.69 a share on 14 October, and at 14,594,180,000 shares that took it from about $4.981 trillion to about $5.005 trillion.
As we read it, the split was by business model rather than by the AI label: Nvidia, which sells the chips, fell 3.16%, while the GPU lessors CoreWeave and Nebius fell 15.46% and 10.08% on a day the yield on CoreWeave’s 2032 notes neared 15%.
As we read it, two companies now sit above $5 trillion on Nasdaq’s figures, Nvidia at $5.333 trillion and Apple at $5.005 trillion, one selling the compute and one selling the devices the AI features ship on.

Three Implications
APPLE Its first close above $5 trillion, at $342.96 a share and 14,594,180,000 shares, came on a 0.50% gain, by our arithmetic on Nasdaq and 10-Q figures.
GPU LESSORS CoreWeave closed down 15.46% and Nebius down 10.08% on Nasdaq’s data, the same session Apple crossed $5 trillion.
NVIDIA Nasdaq lists it at $5.333 trillion after a 3.16% fall, still the larger of the two companies above $5 trillion.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.
The framework puts it this way: “The thesis: the capex race is no longer a corporate spending cycle. It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing — and the financial architecture is starting to invert.”
It also notes that “Apple reported the day after, decreasing capex year-over-year” while the Big Four lifted theirs. As we read it, 14 October fits that split: the company cutting its capex closed at a record valuation while CoreWeave, the lessor with the 2032 notes, fell the most.

What Is Not Established
Market capitalisation here is price times the share count Apple last reported; it moves with every trade, and the next close can be lower.
We could not read the Wall Street Journal’s article and do not use it. Nothing here says why Apple rose while AI infrastructure names fell.
The Bottom Line
Apple closed at $342.96 on 14 October 2026, a market capitalisation of about $5.005 trillion on Nasdaq’s data and its 10-Q share count, its first close above $5 trillion by our arithmetic, on a day CoreWeave, Dell, Nebius and Oracle each fell more than 8%.

A note on sourcing. The Wall Street Journal first reported on 14 October 2026 that Apple had closed above $5 trillion; we could not read its article and do not use it. We checked the milestone ourselves against Nasdaq’s official closing data and quote summaries for 14 October, Nasdaq’s historical closing prices for Apple, and the share counts on the cover pages of Apple’s filings on EDGAR. The market-cap and first-close figures are our arithmetic on those numbers. We did not speak to Apple.
