Uber announced the company-wide rollout of ChatGPT Work, an agent inside ChatGPT Enterprise, to more than 30,000 employees, according to OpenAI’s post announcing it on 22 October 2026. The rollout expands an initial pilot of 1,000 employees, which by our arithmetic makes it about 30 times larger.
In plain words, an agent here is software that takes a multi-step task, such as preparing a meeting brief or analysing data, and works through it across apps like Gmail, Google Drive and Slack until it hands back finished work. OpenAI’s post calls it Uber’s first company-wide deployment of an agentic platform tailored for knowledge work.
Business Pill · AI AGENTS

A short Business Engineer explainer on AI agents: software that moves from answering questions to doing multi-step tasks. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this piece.
The key insight: As we read it, the new number is the size of the jump: Uber is moving ChatGPT Work from a 1,000-employee pilot to more than 30,000 employees, about 30 times larger by our arithmetic, according to OpenAI’s post.
What OpenAI Announced
- The scale. The rollout “will make ChatGPT Work available to more than 30,000 employees across Uber’s global workforce,” expanding “from an initial pilot of 1,000 employees,” the post says.
- What it does. ChatGPT Work connects with Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack, “enabling workers to research information, prepare meeting briefs, create presentations, analyze data and complete workflows across applications,” according to the post.
- The model. GPT-6.1 Sol “will be deployed as the default capability within ChatGPT Work,” the post says, with voice and image generation also available.
- Who uses what. The post names teams across functions including operations, finance, marketing and product, and says Uber’s developers and software engineering teams “will also continue using Codex.”
| Who at Uber | What they get | As OpenAI’s post states it |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot group | ChatGPT Work | An initial pilot of 1,000 employees |
| All employees | ChatGPT Work, company-wide | More than 30,000 employees across Uber’s global workforce, in a company-wide rollout announced on 22 October 2026 |
| Operations, finance, marketing and product teams | ChatGPT Work, with Uber’s internal AI skills library, approved integrations and employee training | Named as functions the rollout supports |
| Developers and software engineering teams | Codex, as well | Will also continue using Codex to accelerate software development |
| Default model | GPT-6.1 Sol | Deployed as the default capability within ChatGPT Work |
Source: OpenAI’s post of 22 October 2026. The 30x jump from the pilot is our arithmetic (30,000 / 1,000), on the post’s “more than 30,000”. The post gives no price, no seat cost and no productivity results.
The post says the rollout is supported by Uber’s internal AI skills library, approved integrations and dedicated employee training, and that the companies plan to share further insights into adoption, use cases and measurable outcomes as the rollout progresses. It gives no price and no results yet.

AI commentator Rohan Paul summarised the rollout on 23 October: Uber is giving ChatGPT Work to more than 30,000 employees, 30 times the size of its 1,000-person pilot, with engineers keeping Codex. He adds that Uber has not disclosed the cost or any productivity results, and that the rollout comes a month after Uber cut about 3,300 roles, which he notes Uber has not linked to ChatGPT Work; those are his points, not OpenAI’s.
Uber added detail of its own. A majority of the pilot’s early adopters, “some 80%,” were non-engineers, Sumanth Sukumar, Uber’s VP of engineering, told TechCrunch, which reported the expansion on 22 October 2026. Sukumar said earlier this year Uber “paired 30 AI engineers with teams across Uber and gave them two weeks to automate key parts of their job,” and that the company will “look at how employees are using the technology” to evaluate outcomes. Uber did not disclose how much it is spending on the rollout, TechCrunch reported.

Connecting the Coverage
Our FDE explainer reported that OpenAI described its forward deployed engineering team, in a post published on 22 October 2026, as built to close “the deployment gap”: the distance between what models appear capable of and what people can reliably use to do their work. Our Thrive piece reported that in the same account, Tax AI processed 7,000 tax returns during its pilot at Thrive Holdings’ accounting firms. What’s new: a named company taking an agent from a pilot to its whole workforce.
Our Agent Compute Engine piece reported that Google Cloud said on 22 October 2026 that its new service already powers Gemini as an agent for work tasks. Our bank agents piece reported that major US banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents in customer accounts, Axios reported on 22 October 2026, and that some banks are restricting them.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the reach matters as much as the size: OpenAI’s post describes ChatGPT Work for teams across functions including operations, finance, marketing and product, while developers also keep Codex for coding work.
As we read it, the rollout is a step from pilot to standard tool: the post calls it Uber’s first company-wide deployment of an agentic platform for knowledge work, backed by a skills library, approved integrations and training.
As we read it, the scoreboard is still blank: the post gives no price and no results, and says the companies plan to share adoption, use cases and measurable outcomes later.

“The expansion makes ChatGPT Work Uberโs first company-wide deployment of an agentic platform tailored for knowledge work.”
Three Implications
FOR UBER’S NON-ENGINEERING TEAMS OpenAI’s post names operations, finance, marketing and product as functions the rollout supports, with Uber’s internal AI skills library and employee training.
FOR OPENAI’S ENTERPRISE BUSINESS The post says ChatGPT Work runs within ChatGPT Enterprise and uses GPT-6.1 Sol as the default model.
FOR READERS TRACKING RESULTS The post gives no price, seat cost or productivity figures; the companies plan to share outcomes as the rollout progresses.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework From SaaS to AGaaS.
The framework’s starting point: “SaaS is charged for access to tools. AGaaS charges for the execution of outcomes.”
As we read it, Uber’s rollout sits between the two: ChatGPT Work is described as an agent that delivers finished work, but OpenAI’s post does not say how Uber pays for it. The framework was published in March 2026 and does not discuss Uber or OpenAI.
What Is Not Established
OpenAI’s post does not give the price of the deployment, the number of employees who will actively use ChatGPT Work, or any productivity or cost results; it says the companies plan to share outcomes later. The 30x figure is our arithmetic on the post’s numbers. We read OpenAI’s post and TechCrunch’s report, which quotes Uber’s VP of engineering; we did not contact OpenAI or Uber. Nothing here is investment advice.
The Bottom Line
Uber is moving ChatGPT Work from a 1,000-employee pilot to more than 30,000 employees, and its developers will also keep using Codex, OpenAI’s post says. The post gives the scale but not the price or the results.
