SpaceX Taps Qualcomm for 5G Sites After $19.6B Spectrum Deal

SpaceX has selected Qualcomm’s Dragonwing cellular infrastructure platforms for the Starlink Mobile terrestrial 5G network it plans to build across the United States, Qualcomm said in a release on 4 November. SpaceX plans to begin the rollout in 2027, “with tens of thousands of sites deployed over the multi-year agreement”.

By our arithmetic, the roughly $19.6 billion SpaceX agreed to pay for EchoStar’s spectrum is about 20% of the at least $100 billion that one analyst, quoted by Axios, expects the whole network to cost.

Business Pill · Vertical Integration

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on vertical integration. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss SpaceX or Qualcomm.

The key insight: SpaceX’s roughly $19.6 billion EchoStar spectrum price is about 20% of the at least $100 billion that Mobile Experts’ Joe Madden estimates the whole network will cost, as Axios reports, by our arithmetic.

What the Release Says

Qualcomm says its QRU100 and QDU100 platforms and “commercial-grade Layer 1 software” will power the network. The release says Starlink Mobile will use Massive MIMO radio units “with 64 transmit and 64 receive paths (64T64R)”.

The release describes “a multi-band network deployed across multiple rollout waves” and calls the deal “a commercial step toward SpaceX and Qualcomm Technologies’ broader vision for AI-native 6G infrastructure”. It gives no contract value and no exact site count.

Michael Nicolls, senior vice president of Starlink, said: “Starlink is building the first fully-integrated nationwide satellite and terrestrial network that will keep people connected no matter where they are”.

What Was Posted on X

Qualcomm’s own post at 13:30Z announced the selection; its release gives no contract value or exact site count.

CNBC’s post at 13:33Z linked its report, which adds that SpaceX has not named tower partners and did not respond to CNBC’s questions.

Who Builds What

According to Axios, Qualcomm will provide the chips and foundational software for radio and baseband processing, while SpaceX will develop additional software and other network elements. Axios reports that Qualcomm executive vice president Durga Malladi declined to disclose financial terms or contractual guarantees.

CNBC reports that SpaceX has not announced partners among cell tower companies or said how many new towers may be required, and that SpaceX did not respond to its request for more information.

The EchoStar Spectrum Deal

SpaceX’s 10-Q for the third quarter puts “The total consideration for the acquisition of the Spectrum Licenses” from EchoStar at approximately $19.6 billion: about $11.1 billion in stock and up to $8.5 billion to pay off designated EchoStar debt. By 30 September it had paid $856 million to the trust holding the licences, about 4.4% of the total, by our arithmetic.

SpaceX’s third-quarter release adds an October agreement for up to 14 megahertz of paired 800 MHz spectrum, expected to close in the first half of 2027. Joe Madden, principal analyst at Mobile Experts, estimates SpaceX will spend “at least $100 billion” on its combined satellite and terrestrial network including spectrum, Axios reports. That estimate is his, not SpaceX’s.

Connectivity was $5.25 billion of SpaceX’s $14.58 billion of third-quarter revenue, or 36.0%, by our arithmetic, in line with the 36% CNBC cites. SpaceX reported 13.6 million Starlink consumer subscribers at 30 September.

Qualcomm Reports on 4 November

Qualcomm is scheduled to report fiscal fourth-quarter results on 4 November, according to its 22 October notice and earnings previews. The release does not say when Qualcomm expects revenue from the agreement.

The Structural Read

As we read the release, Qualcomm supplies the radio and baseband building blocks while, according to Axios, SpaceX writes more of the software and other network elements itself.

As we read the filings, SpaceX had paid $856 million of the roughly $19.6 billion spectrum price by 30 September, about 4.4%, by our arithmetic, so most of that bill and the radio build both lie ahead.

Three Implications

FOR QUALCOMM The release names its QRU100 and QDU100 platforms for tens of thousands of sites; it gives no contract value.

FOR SPACEX’S SPEND The spectrum price alone is about 20% of one analyst’s $100 billion-plus network estimate, by our arithmetic.

FOR THE CARRIERS CNBC reports SpaceX has not named tower partners or said how many new towers it needs.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.

The framework puts it this way: “The surfaces through which AI reaches end users.”

As we read it, a phone network is one such surface: the release ties the deal to an “AI-native 6G” vision. The framework does not discuss SpaceX or Qualcomm.

What Is Not Established

The release does not give the contract value, the exact number of sites, the spectrum bands for the ground network or the tower partners. The $100 billion figure is an analyst estimate. SpaceX had filed no 8-K on the agreement when we checked EDGAR at about 14:05Z.
