SK hynix plans shareholder returns of “approximately 100 trillion won” for fiscal 2026, the memory maker said in its third-quarter results release on 28 October (SK hynix). A Wall Street Journal headline on 7 November put the plan at $75 billion (WSJ).
By our arithmetic, 100 trillion won is about 101% of the 98.7 trillion won of net cash SK hynix reported at the end of September, and about 12.6% of the company’s market value at the 6 November close.
Business Pill · Concentration
A short Business Engineer explainer on concentration: when a few big pieces make up most of a total. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss this company.
The key insight: SK hynix plans approximately 100 trillion won of 2026 shareholder returns, which a WSJ headline put at $75 billion; by our arithmetic that is about 101% of its 98.7 trillion won of September net cash and about 12.6% of its market value at the 6 November close.
What SK Hynix Announced
The release says the 2026 total comprises “cash dividends of 30 trillion won or more and share repurchases and cancellations of 60 trillion won or more in total, including the 40 trillion won announced in August”. It says the August repurchase “was completed last week, and the shares will be cancelled shortly”.
The company said that through the plan it “intends to fulfill its commitment to return 50% or more of free cash flow (FCF)”.

The Third-Quarter Payout
The board approved a third-quarter cash dividend of 14 trillion won and a share repurchase of 20 trillion won. According to the release, 10 trillion won of the repurchase is earmarked for shareholder returns and will be cancelled in full, while “the remaining approximately 10 trillion won will be used for employee compensation and is not included in the shareholder return total”.
The dividend is 20,000 won per share: a 10,000-won dividend reflecting earnings and a 10,000-won special dividend that the company said shares the gains from its Kioxia investment.
The Cash Behind It
SK hynix reported third-quarter revenue of 104.6155 trillion won and operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won, an 80% operating margin. It said cash and cash equivalents stood at 114.5 trillion won and borrowings at 15.8 trillion won, leaving net cash of 98.7 trillion won.
The release sets out three principles: dividends based on operating results, special dividends when significant investment gains arise, and share repurchases every quarter.
Our Numbers
100 trillion won against 98.7 trillion won of net cash is about 101% (our arithmetic). The 14 trillion won dividend at 20,000 won per share implies roughly 700 million shares receiving it; at the 6 November KRX close of 1,132,000 won (Yahoo Finance data), that is a market value of about 792 trillion won, of which the 2026 plan is about 12.6% (our arithmetic).
The 20,000-won third-quarter dividend alone is about 1.8% of that close. The plan is also about 69% of the 143.9 trillion won of operating profit SK hynix reported for the second and third quarters combined (our arithmetic). The shares closed at 1,526,000 won on 29 October, the day after the announcement, and are down about 25.8% since then.
Connecting the Coverage
The payout comes as memory prices rise: HBM prices were seen up 121% as SK hynix buyers shift to 8-high stacks (our piece), and DRAM revenue rose 369% to nearly $200 billion (our piece). TSMC is said to be weighing 3D DRAM at Nvidia’s request (our piece). The shares have been volatile: SK hynix fell 9.5% in one session (our piece) and KOSPI was halted after an 8.6% plunge (our piece). Kioxia, whose gains fund the special dividend, matched SK hynix’s 80% margin (our piece).
The Structural Read
As we read the release, the plan is sized to the cash pile rather than to a single quarter: it roughly matches net cash at the end of September, by our arithmetic.
As we read the payout mix, buybacks and cancellations of 60 trillion won or more are at least twice the 30 trillion won or more of dividends, per the release’s floors.
As we read the Kioxia element, part of the payout depends on investment gains rather than memory sales: the release ties the 10,000-won special dividend to those gains.
SK hynix, 28 October 2026
“Through this, the company intends to fulfill its commitment to return 50% or more of free cash flow (FCF).”
Three Implications
FOR SHAREHOLDERS The third-quarter dividend is 20,000 won per share, about 1.8% of the 6 November close by our arithmetic.
FOR BUYBACKS The release says share repurchases will continue every quarter, and the 40 trillion won August repurchase was completed and the shares will be cancelled.
FOR STAFF PAY About 10 trillion won of the 20 trillion won third-quarter repurchase goes to employee compensation, which the release excludes from the shareholder return total.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.
The analysis says: “HBM growth is outpacing accelerator demand, making memory the rate-limiting factor in the AI scaling equation.”
As we read it, the payout shows where that constraint’s cash is going at SK hynix: about 100 trillion won back to shareholders this year, per the release. The analysis does not discuss the return plan.
What Is Not Established
The release gives the 2026 plan in won only; the $75 billion figure is the WSJ’s, and we have not read the WSJ article beyond its headline. The share count and market value above are our approximations from the company’s dividend figures and a KRX close. The release does not give a free-cash-flow figure for the year, so the 50% commitment cannot be checked from it.
The Bottom Line
SK hynix plans about 100 trillion won of 2026 shareholder returns, at least 30 trillion won in dividends and at least 60 trillion won in buybacks and cancellations, which the WSJ put at $75 billion. By our arithmetic the plan is about 101% of the company’s September net cash and about 12.6% of its market value at the 6 November close.
