SAP Tops โ‚ฌ10B of Quarterly Revenue for the First Time

SAP crossed €10 billion of total revenue in a single quarter for the first time, the company said in its third quarter 2026 results on 21 October 2026. Total revenue was €10.27 billion, about $11.54 billion (our conversion), up 13%. Its current cloud backlog, the contracted cloud revenue it expects to recognise over the next twelve months, rose 28% to €24.1 billion, about $27.12 billion.

Chief executive Christian Klein tied the quarter to AI: customers, he said, are investing “from the cloud and data foundation to our Business AI.” SAP now expects 2026 cloud revenue towards the upper end of its €25.8 billion to €26.2 billion range. Dollar figures here are our conversions at the European Central Bank reference rate of $1.1234 per euro on 21 October 2026.

Business Pill · EMBEDDED DEPENDENCY

A short explainer on embedded dependency: what sits inside the products a company buys and why that layer is hard to replace. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about SAP’s results.

The key insight: As we read it, the number that matters most is the €24.1 billion current cloud backlog, up 28%: contracted cloud revenue SAP expects to book over the next twelve months, set against a statement that gives no separate revenue figure for Business AI.

What SAP Reported

Total revenue was €10,270 million, against €9,076 million a year earlier, up 13% and up 12% at constant currencies. Cloud revenue was €6,668 million, up 26%, and made up about 65% of the total (our arithmetic). Within it, Cloud ERP Suite revenue was €5,924 million, up 29%.

Operating profit under IFRS was €2,930 million, up 18%, and the operating margin was 28.5%, against 27.4% a year earlier. Free cash flow was €1,718 million, up 36%. Chief financial officer Dominik Asam said: “For the first time, SAP crossed €10 billion in total quarterly revenue and €3 billion of non-IFRS operating profit.”

SAP notes that cloud revenue growth “was positively impacted by several quarter-specific effects, mainly a multi-quarter revenue catch-up from customers returning from financial distress.” Its older lines kept shrinking: software support revenue fell 5% to €2,434 million and software licence revenue fell 9% to €147 million.

The Backlog, Quarter by Quarter

Current cloud backlog was €24,144 million at the end of September, against €18,839 million a year earlier: up 28%, and up 26% at constant currencies. It was €21.9 billion at the end of the first quarter and €22.9 billion at the end of the second, according to SAP’s earlier releases.

In plain terms, current cloud backlog is subscription revenue customers have already signed for and that SAP expects to book over the coming year. For the full year, SAP still expects its growth at constant currencies “to slightly decelerate” from 25% in 2025.

Where AI Shows Up

The quarterly statement gives no separate revenue figure for Business AI. What it does give are three acquisitions closed this year, each described in AI terms. Reltio, a master data management provider bought “to help customers make their SAP and non-SAP enterprise data AI-ready,” cost US$1,259 million (€1,076 million). Dremio, a data lakehouse “built to accelerate agentic AI,” cost approximately €515 million, a preliminary figure.

Prior Labs, which SAP calls a pioneer of Tabular Foundation Models, AI models trained on structured business data, cost approximately €518 million, also preliminary. Together that is about €2.11 billion in the euro amounts SAP reports (our arithmetic). The three added €49 million of revenue in the quarter and reduced IFRS operating profit by €59 million, SAP says.

SAP also said it has agreed to acquire TechWolf, which it calls “a provider of a leading AI work intelligence platform,” and that on 6 October it showed “how Joule Work and Joule Assistants generate value for customers across every line of business.” Joule is SAP’s AI assistant.

The Outlook

SAP now expects 2026 cloud revenue “towards the upper end of the outlook range of €25.8 – 26.2 billion at constant currencies,” about $28.98 billion to $29.43 billion, and cloud and software revenue towards the upper end of €36.3 billion to €36.8 billion. It continues to expect non-IFRS operating profit of €11.8 billion to €12.2 billion and free cash flow of approximately €10 billion.

It expects total revenue growth at constant currencies in 2026 to stay at similar levels to 2025’s 10.6% and “to accelerate in 2027,” and its software support revenue decline “to accelerate in the coming years as a consequence of an acceleration of customers transforming to the cloud.”

Connecting the Coverage

Earlier on 21 October, at GTC Berlin, Nvidia named SAP among the companies using its open Nemotron models and datasets “to create custom models and build domain-specific agents” (our Nvidia open models piece).

On 20 October Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for about $5.66 billion in enterprise value, another enterprise software company buying data and engagement layers (our Salesforce piece).

And on 21 October we put the week’s numbers on AI and work in one table, including a Nielsen survey for Monday.com in which 58% of managers said they expect to oversee more AI agents than human employees within the next year (our AI and work piece).

The Structural Read

As we read it, SAP’s AI spending this year shows up in its acquisitions rather than in a revenue line: about €2.11 billion for Reltio, Dremio and Prior Labs (our arithmetic), each described in the statement in data and AI terms.

As we read it, the business is shifting inside the same totals: cloud revenue rose 26% to €6,668 million while software support revenue fell 5% and licence revenue fell 9%, and SAP expects the support decline “to accelerate in the coming years as a consequence of an acceleration of customers transforming to the cloud.”

As we read it, part of this quarter’s cloud growth is one-off by SAP’s own account: it says cloud revenue was helped by “a multi-quarter revenue catch-up from customers returning from financial distress,” without giving the amount.

Three Implications

FOR SAP CUSTOMERS As we read it, SAP is buying the data layer its AI products sit on: Reltio for master data, Dremio for a lakehouse and Prior Labs for models trained on structured business data, per the statement’s own descriptions.

FOR ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE RIVALS SAP reports current cloud backlog of €24.1 billion, up 28%, and Cloud ERP Suite revenue up 29%, and software support revenue down 5%, all in its own Quarterly Statement.

FOR INVESTORS SAP says it is updating its outlook and now expects 2026 cloud revenue “towards the upper end” of €25.8 billion to €26.2 billion at constant currencies, and says total revenue growth is expected “to accelerate in 2027.” Both are SAP’s outlook, not results.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework AI & The Great SaaS Bifurcation.

The framework’s core claim: “What emerges is a barbelled market structure where software companies must choose between racing to the commoditization floor or climbing to the embedding ceiling.”

As we read it, SAP’s quarter reads as a bid for the embedding ceiling: Cloud ERP Suite revenue up 29%, and about €2.11 billion spent on the data and model layers its AI runs on (our arithmetic). The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss this release.

What Is Not Established

SAP does not break out revenue from Business AI or Joule, so this piece does not size it. The share of cloud revenue growth that came from the one-off catch-up SAP describes is not given. Comments from SAP’s earnings webcast are not in this version. We did not contact SAP.

The Bottom Line

SAP reported €10.27 billion of revenue in the third quarter of 2026, its first quarter above €10 billion, with current cloud backlog up 28% to €24.1 billion and cloud revenue up 26%. It has spent about €2.11 billion this year on three acquisitions it describes in AI terms (our arithmetic), and now expects cloud revenue towards the top of its 2026 range.
