Muse vs ChatGPT: Users Give It 7.5 Minutes a Day vs 23

Similarweb published a breakdown of Meta’s Muse app on 27 October 2026. It puts US users of the Muse app at 7.5 minutes a day on average, against 23 minutes for ChatGPT. Muse’s daily active users on iPhone and Android in the US reached 2.9 million by 17 October, the report’s chart shows.

The same day, Similarweb posted the US App Store rankings as of 26 October: “Muse: #3 ChatGPT: #4 Claude: #11 Grok Bot: #82”. Every figure below is Similarweb’s and covers the US only.

A 16:9 video explainer on Meta’s Muse, narrated from the published text of this piece and three related FourWeekMBA pieces.

The key insight: As we read it, Similarweb’s numbers split reach from use: Muse reached 2.9 million daily US users, about 23 times Grok Bot’s by Similarweb’s count, while each user spends about a third of ChatGPT’s daily time in it.

What Similarweb Measured

The report covers Muse’s first five weeks. Meta launched Muse on 8 September 2026, the report says, “as a personal AI agent that plans, browses and pays on the user’s behalf.”

Its scope is narrow on purpose. “All figures in the report cover the standalone Muse app and website only — they exclude usage inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, or any other Meta app,” it says.

A daily active user is someone who opens the app on a given day. Similarweb counts iPhone and Android together for that figure.

What Was Posted on X

Similarweb posted App Store rankings as of 26 October: Muse No. 3, ChatGPT No. 4, Claude No. 11 and Grok Bot No. 82, and linked its new report on Muse’s performance since launch.

How Fast Muse Grew

Muse had 64,471 daily active users in the US on 10 September, according to the report’s chart, and 2,907,632 on 17 October.

Growth was slow at first. “On September 21 it jumped and kept climbing,” the report says. The chart shows 681,655 daily users on 20 September and 1,283,154 the next day.

Similarweb ties the jump to two things: Meta’s referral program, which gave users extra free usage for inviting friends, and Meta Connect two days later, which “put Muse on stage.”

The nearest standalone AI agent, Grok Bot, had 125,776 daily users on 17 October by the same chart. “The nearest standalone AI agent, Grok Bot, trails Muse by roughly 23 to 1,” the report says.

The Time Gap

Average minutes per user per day, iPhone and Android in the US, per the report: ChatGPT 23 minutes, Claude 20 minutes, Muse 7.5 minutes and Grok Bot 5 minutes.

Similarweb reads the gap in Muse’s favour. “But that gap is the product working as designed. An AI agent is judged by what it gets done, not how long you watch it work,” the report says.

Retention, the share of new installers still using an app days later, tells a closer story. For people who installed in September on Android in the US, the report’s chart shows 43.2% of Muse users still active on day 1 and 23.7% on day 14. ChatGPT’s figures were 52.8% and 28.6%; Claude’s were 41.3% and 18.4%.

Where Muse Ranks in the App Store

Similarweb’s daily chart of the US App Store’s Top Free list puts Muse at No. 4 on 10 September and No. 1 for the first time on 19 September. From then to 19 October it was No. 1 on 29 of 31 days, by our count of the chart.

Its 27 October post, giving ranks as of 26 October, has Muse at No. 3 and ChatGPT at No. 4. A single day’s rank is a snapshot of that day’s chart.

Search placement moved too. On 29 September Muse ranked No. 11 in App Store searches for “ai agent” and No. 31 for “chatgpt”; by 17 October it was No. 2 and No. 17, the report’s chart shows.

App and Web Together

“In September, Muse reached 4.65M deduplicated users in the US,” the report says. Its chart splits them into 1.99 million on the apps only, 1.19 million on both app and web, and 1.47 million on the web only.

“A third of Muse’s audience never opened the app, and over 40% never used the web,” it says.

Connecting the Coverage

On 20 October we reported Sensor Tower data, via TechCrunch, showing 10.2 million US downloads in Muse’s first 40 days. On 21 October we covered a chart credited to Morgan Stanley that showed 23% of Muse installs active by day 14. On 25 October our personal agent race piece set Muse against OpenAI’s dots.

On 26 October NVIDIA said Meta’s Muse models and agents “have delivered frontier-level benchmark performance and surging consumer downloads since launch,” in the release covered in our piece on NVIDIA investing $3B in Meta’s stock. Meta’s share sale is covered in our piece on Meta’s $35B stock sale.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the 21 September jump is a distribution story: Similarweb ties it to Meta’s referral program and to Meta Connect putting Muse on stage two days later.

As we read it, the time gap needs care: Similarweb argues an agent “is judged by what it gets done, not how long you watch it work,” and its figures do not measure tasks completed.

As we read it, retention is the closer comparison: 23.7% of Muse’s September Android installers were active on day 14, against 28.6% for ChatGPT and 18.4% for Claude, per Similarweb.

Three Implications

FOR META Similarweb counts 2.9 million daily US users of the standalone Muse app by 17 October, excluding Muse inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

FOR RIVAL AGENTS Similarweb says Grok Bot, the nearest standalone AI agent it tracks, trails Muse by roughly 23 to 1 in daily users.

FOR ANYONE MEASURING AI APPS Similarweb says a third of Muse’s September audience never opened the app and over 40% never used the web.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework From SaaS to AGaaS.

The framework opens with one sentence: “SaaS is charged for access to tools. AGaaS charges for the execution of outcomes.”

As we read it, Similarweb’s own reading of Muse’s 7.5 minutes applies that idea to a consumer app: time spent is an access-era measure, and an agent is meant to be judged on what it completes. The framework was published in March 2026 and does not discuss Muse.

What Is Not Established

The figures are Similarweb’s estimates, and they exclude Muse inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. The retention figures are for Android only, and the time and daily-user figures cover iPhone and Android in the US. Different firms’ retention measures, including the Sensor Tower and Morgan Stanley figures we covered earlier, are not directly comparable.

The Bottom Line

Similarweb counts 2.9 million daily US users of the Muse app by 17 October, with 7.5 minutes of use per user per day against ChatGPT’s 23, and Muse at No. 3 on the US App Store on 26 October.

A note on sourcing. All usage, retention and ranking figures are Similarweb’s, from its report “Muse app breakdown” and its post on X, both published on 27 October 2026, and cover the US only. The count of days at No. 1 is ours, from the report’s daily rank chart. NVIDIA’s quote is from its 26 October release. We did not contact Meta or Similarweb.
