On 24 October 2026 Thibault Sottiaux, whose X profile lists “Codex & ChatGPT @OpenAI”, posted on X: “DM if you want to help scale dots to 1B users and have done similar things in the past.” Dots is OpenAI’s always-on personal agent, launched on 29 September 2026 and rolling out first to Pro and Business Premium users.
Meta’s rival agent, Muse, already has scale. Meta said on its third-quarter call on 21 October that Muse has been adopted by more than 10 million users, TechCrunch reported. The day before, TechCrunch reported Sensor Tower data showing 10.2 million US downloads in Muse’s first 40 days, against 3.7 million for ChatGPT over its own first 40 days.

This Week In The AI Supercycle · VIDEO
The Business Engineer’s explainer for the week of 18 to 24 October 2026. It was made before this piece and does not discuss dots or Muse.
The key insight: As we read it, the two agents start from different places: an OpenAI team member is recruiting to take dots, launched on paid plans, to 1 billion users, while Meta says Muse has passed 10 million users and Sensor Tower puts its first 40 days of US downloads ahead of ChatGPT’s.
The Dots Post
Sottiaux’s post is a recruiting call, not a product announcement. It names a target of 1 billion users for dots and asks for people who “have done similar things in the past.” The post gives no date for that number.
The X account Tak, which quoted the post, called it “an ENORMOUS bet on Dots” and wrote that “ChatGPT currently has 1.2 billion weekly users.” We have not checked that user figure against an OpenAI statement. Tak also wrote that “Dots are still limited to higher-tier plans.”
When OpenAI launched dots on 29 September, its product page said each dot works on its own cloud computer. It also said the first personal dot is included in existing Pro and Business Premium plans in eligible markets, as our launch piece reported.

What Was Posted on X
Thibault Sottiaux (@thsottiaux) posted this on 24 October 2026, asking people who have done similar things in the past to get in touch to help scale dots to 1B users. The post gives no date for that number.
The X account Tak quoted the Sottiaux post on 24 October 2026, calling it โan ENORMOUS bet on Dotsโ and writing that ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users. Those are Tak’s words and figure.
Shay Boloor (@StockSavvyShay) posted this on 24 October 2026, comparing Muse’s first 40 days of US downloads with ChatGPT’s, which Boloor reads as a sign of Meta’s distribution advantage, and Muse’s 7-day retention with competing AI apps.
Similarweb (@Similarweb) posted its September 2026 audience overlap for Google and ChatGPT on 24 October 2026: 14.1% of primary Google visitors also visited ChatGPT, and 93.7% of primary ChatGPT visitors also visited Google.
Where Muse Stands
Sensor Tower’s data, as reported by TechCrunch on 20 October, put Muse’s 7-day retention in the US at 30%, against a 19% average for ChatGPT, Claude and Grok. A chart credited to Morgan Stanley, posted by the X account @intelfabs the same day, showed 73% of Muse installs active on Day 1 and 23% by Day 14.
On 24 October Shay Boloor (@StockSavvyShay) posted two charts credited to Citi Research and Sensor Tower. Their titles read “Muse at 11M+ U.S. App Downloads in 6 Weeks” and “with U.S. DAUs Above ~2.7M”. Boloor wrote that the download gap shows “how powerful $META distribution advantage is.”
The comparison has limits. Globally, ChatGPT reached around 15 million downloads in its first 40 days, ahead of Muse, TechCrunch wrote, and Muse was then available only in the US and Canada. Meta began offering Muse in Japan on 23 October, Nikkei reported.

The Distribution Question
Similarweb posted on 24 October that in September 2026, “14.1% of primary Google visitors also visited ChatGPT” and “93.7% of primary ChatGPT visitors also visited Google.” By our reading of those two figures, almost all of ChatGPT’s primary web visitors also used Google, while most of Google’s did not visit ChatGPT.
Meta has also spent on reach: TechCrunch reported Sensor Tower data showing Meta put 39% of its total advertising spend behind Muse in October. Sottiaux’s profile lists both Codex and ChatGPT.
Connecting the Coverage
Our dots launch piece covered the safeguards on OpenAI’s product page, including that certain sensitive tasks always stay with the user. Our Muse downloads piece covered the Sensor Tower figures, and our Muse retention piece covered the Day 1 to Day 14 drop. Our Muse Japan piece covered Nikkei’s report that Meta says Muse will stay ad-free.
What this piece adds is the target on the other side: an OpenAI team member recruiting to take dots to a billion users while Muse reports more than 10 million.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the dots post is a target, not a result: Sottiaux asks for people who have scaled products before and gives no date, while the dots launch on 29 September covered Pro and Business Premium plans.
As we read it, Muse’s numbers come with a spend line: TechCrunch reported Sensor Tower data showing Meta put 39% of its total advertising spend behind Muse in October.
As we read it, Similarweb’s overlap describes where the users already are: 93.7% of primary ChatGPT visitors also visited Google in September, against 14.1% the other way.

Three Implications
FOR OPENAI Dots launched on Pro and Business Premium plans in eligible markets, as our launch piece reported; Sottiaux’s post sets a target of 1 billion users without a date.
FOR META TechCrunch reported Meta’s figure of more than 10 million Muse users and Sensor Tower’s 39% share of Meta’s October advertising spend behind the app.
FOR GOOGLE Similarweb’s September data shows 93.7% of primary ChatGPT visitors also visited Google, which keeps Google in the path of the same users.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.
The analysis puts it this way: “With fewer than one in a hundred individual users on the agentic surface, the conversational interface still overwhelmingly owns the consumer base.”
As we read it, dots and Muse are both attempts to move consumers onto an agentic surface: OpenAI’s from inside ChatGPT’s paid plans, Meta’s from its own apps and ad budget. The analysis was published in July 2026 and does not discuss dots or Muse.
What Is Not Established
Sottiaux’s post gives no dots user count and no date for the 1 billion target, and the launch details we reported on 29 September covered paid plans only. The 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users figure comes from Tak’s post. The Citi Research charts were posted by Boloor and we could not read the underlying Citi report. Similarweb’s figures cover web visits, not app use. We did not contact OpenAI, Meta, Similarweb or Sensor Tower.
The Bottom Line
An OpenAI team member is recruiting to scale dots to 1 billion users, while Meta says Muse has passed 10 million users and Sensor Tower data shows Muse ahead of ChatGPT’s first 40 days in US downloads. Similarweb’s September data adds that 93.7% of primary ChatGPT visitors also visited Google.

A note on sourcing. This piece is based on Thibault Sottiaux’s post on X of 24 October 2026, TechCrunch’s reports of 20 and 21 October 2026 (Sensor Tower data and Meta’s third-quarter call), and posts on X by Similarweb and Shay Boloor, read on 25 October 2026. Download and retention figures are Sensor Tower’s estimates. We did not contact OpenAI, Meta, Similarweb or Sensor Tower.
